Re: HiMedia HD600B or WD TV LIVE in India Pune

After the firmware upgrade I scanned the HDD for music files and the Music short cut in the Home of himedia has links to all the music files on HDD. Is there a better way to organize these?

I see some 3000 odd files just listed in random order.

well guys, as per the suggestion of Kittu and baijuxavior, i got myself the himedia 600b media player last week. It was apparently the last piece left with Detna. so far i am pleased with it and have watched four movies over the weekend. i must say it is very convenient to use.

i also have a htpc, recently loaded with XBMC live, but all said and done and i am going to ruffle some feathers here, right now i like the media player option way over the the HTPC. more cost effective and convenient.

i just have one question though. does anyone know what's the DAC chip in himedia 600b? was wondering if optical, or coaxial out through my maverick audio DAC magic may sound better. not that maverick is any good as a DAC. just that the tube preamp of it is good.

Re: HiMedia HD600B or WD TV LIVE in India Pune

I only know that the unit has Realtek 1185 chipset. Better use the optical/coaxial out from the unit to your DAC and DAC to the amp ...Let us know the sound improvement.

Re: HiMedia HD600B or WD TV LIVE in India Pune

i tried and there is a slight improvement (good coloration) but thats more due to the tube than the DAC, but not worth the hassle of putting another component in the signal path. also i am using himedia for videos, hence a slight hit is SQ is cool.

for video the connection is

himedia to NADamp to Nibbana Towers

for audio

Marntz 6003 CDP to Maverick audio Tube Preamp via Analogue to NAD to Nibbana.

Re: HiMedia HD600B or WD TV LIVE in India Pune

Ordered HD600B via DETNA...
Since there was not much information on privacy policy, I chose to make the payment mode as COD.

Now. lets wait and see...

@baijuxavior

are u on this firmware 1.0.4.21 ...ur not facing any problems on it then ?

http://v.himedia-tech.cn/himedia/hd600/20110902/HD600_1.0.4.21.rar

I faced problems with the older firmware 1.0.4.17. Now there is no problem as of now. Will try to add a few more movies and songs once I reach home and check whether there is any problem scanning the files.

I have experienced problems before especially with the file scanning. I got only one day to test the player when I got it. At that day I used a USB pendrive and the internal hdd and tested to find everything OK. I also had updated i to the latest firmware available then. After one week when I reached home with my HDD to which I have copied around 40 HD rip movies and 17K+ songs, I found the player completed the scanning in just one or two seconds:sad:. When I select any library buttons like movie or music, it showed a message 'library operating out'. Later I updated to another FW and even downgraded to the origial FW, but the problem persisted. So I formatted the drive using the player's format option and tested with a few files and it seemed everything working fine. But then I again when I copied my entire media files, this time another message showed up something like 'media libray is empty. do you want to scan'. I tried several times. Every time the scanning will end in one second. Sometimes it will only scan the top folder, sometimes the files showed as 'invalid files' when tried to play. At last I deleted the folder '.Thetter' which is where the database is located . It worked this time. It took over one and a half hours to complete the scanning. Then I upgraded to the latest FW 1.0.4.21. Now let me see what will happen if I add some more files.

Re: HiMedia HD600B or WD TV LIVE in India Pune

Is the firmware upgrade possible using WIFI option? :)

Kittu, the firmware upgrade file was 144 MB. The option is to copy the file to USB and upgrade. Even if there was a way to upgrade with WIFI, I think 144MB sourcing would be a problem. May be that is the reason behind USB route of upgrade.

HiMedia Owners Thread

I see that we have a growing owners of HiMedia player. Wanted to create a thread for discussing the various aspects of HiMedia players in a consolidated place. Pls post all your queries, updates w.r.t HiMedia players here.

What else I would like to see in future upgrades:
1. Welcome screen looks is so 90's. Like a kids project. First impression is bad, when you see the welcome screen.

We can create a new welcome image (full HD quality with Himedia Logo) and repackage the firmware with new image for our use.

Hi, I just figured out a way to change the welcome image. Since I'm not at home I can't test it. Users are requested to test it at your own risk.

To do this you will need:

1. Firmware file
2. squashfs - a tool to unpack and repack the firmware - For your use I have uploaded it here
3. Image file of your choice

First download squashfs and unrar it. You will see a folder 'hdp' with two .bat files and a 'tools' folder.

Put the firmware file install.img in the folder 'hdp'. Now double click the open-squashfs.bat file. This will unpack the firmware.

Browse to the folder squashfs-root\usr\local\bin\Resources

Locate the image file IMAGE_COMMON_LOGO.png and replace it with your new image file. The existing file has a resolution of 1900*1200.

If you want you can change the entire UI like this. For changing the screen saver image, replace the file IMAGE_SCREENSAVER_LOGO.png

Now go back to the 'hdp' folder, double click the make-squashfs.bat file to repack the changed firmware. Load the new install.img file using safe mode upgrade.

If something goes wrong, you can always use the old install.img file ot restore.

I hope someone will do this DIY today and report. Also please share your welcome screens.

Thanks baijuxavior for the findings.

I will not be able to verify the same because of some unavoidable reasons.

I request to all Adobe or digital art designers, to design a new Full HD welcome screen for HiMedia player.

I will test it possibly today and will report the result. I'm not an expert in photoshop and graphics designing. Same request to those who can design a good welcome screen image.

Can someone provide the current image file as it is? Im no designer but I will try.
Was having a look at HD800 whch is sigma based but no reviews available. Detna has quoted 12k for it.

How is this one?

baijuxavior, I tried the above and unfortunately it didnt work for me. After the upgrade with modified image, himedia keeps rebooting continuously. I had to revert back to the orginal firmware code to get rid of rebooting!

One catch may be that I used one of the JPG images rather than a PNG image.
