Generally, the easiest way is to increase the distance between the speakers and the wall behind them. 2-3 feet behind the speakers should fix bass boom, and improve the soundstage.

This is assuming you have the speakers on a firm platform or stand of some sort. Putting the speakers on a light wicker stool or a hollow enclosure of some sort with a thin top (frequently seen, and used here as illustration as possibly the worst-case-scenario) will kill all bass definition.

Try different speaker placements. This is the first thing that works.
Thick open cell foam can then be used if you want to treat your room.

Hi,

which speakers or setup you using ?

it will be easy if you upload few pics too

IF your stereo system has a bass knob, turn it down till you get the result you want.

Change your source. In my experience, a bad source booms. A good source gives you nice tight bass. All my bass overhang problems vanished the moment i upgraded my sources. To know what is good bass, try to listen to a the decent quality turntable in your setup if you can.
