Dear all, just thought i'd let you all know about something interesting that happened to me yesterday evening. Was a cold rainy evening here in Trivandrum (late evening, after the India-England ODI at Eden Gardens), sat down to listen to some vinyl before going to bed. Interestingly the right channel sounded louder than the left, checked everything from stylus to speaker cables, tried all stuff like reversing channel cables, etc but to no avail. The right channel still sounded louder than the left. Nevertheless, restored the original setup and decided to shut down for the day. Tried again early this morning with the same results. Got my wife to listen in, she came back saying that both channels played at the same levels. Put on my NAK DR3 in recording mode and got equi-levels on the level indicator. Wife suggested that she check my ears  and after some debate, i agreed. Know what, apparently my left ear was blocked by a thick layer of wax :D which was pretty embarassing. Off to the ENT specialist for a clean up, this evening :eek:hyeah:

Don't hit me for this ... but Ear wax is good for polishing Vinyl LPs. Better than Civet poop. Save it in a test tube and bring it back. :eek:hyeah:

OMG! I always have a softer reception in my right ear. Maybe I should visit a doc too!

I was having a going-deaf panic attack because I couldn't hear the kitchen timer. My wife told me she couldn't either --- the battery was flat!

But I couldn't hear a lot of other things --- so, yes, a trip to the ENT man, with the same conclusion: loads of wax.

For the week in which I had to have Soliwax drops in my ears twice a day, I was almost completely deaf, but after the washing out ...I still couldn't hear the kitchen timer. So we bought a new battery.

Curious ... So did stuffing batteries in your ears actually improve your hearing? ... :)

Stuffing cotton wool in the kitchen timer certainly made it beep louder ;)

Curiously, this thread reminds me that it is time for another visit. The ENT man said I might need a washout every six months or so.

I wonder how reubensm is now?

Time for some enterprising entrepreneur to market audiophile grade ear de-waxing fluid and earbuds...

Had a ear wash last evening, with warm water, after a day of audiosol drops. The ear wax was washed out and now, my vinyl sounds like it used to :)

Audiosol drops? Speacial ear drops for audiophiles?

Nick and Rahul - You guys are killing me here

This is important. Now along with my protractor, stylus force gauge, i am stocking de-waxing fluid. Just in case...

It's better than treatment with an audiofile!

Seriously, though ... we think we would be aware of blocked ears like we are of a blocked nose, but diminishing hearing can be the only obvious symptom.

Hmmm... Iwonder how many audio myths are down to earwax? ;)

Agreed! I bet a good ear scrubbing will result in deeper bass, sparklier highs, punchier mids, wider soundstages, pin-point-ier imaging etc.
