Hi CNu

I don't even want to play the cd6003 for a minute!! There is no comparison.
It is not like an explosion or dhamaka that reveals a starburst. The difference is subtle but very important.

The Shigaraki communicates the music with soul. It is very much like Vinyl where the sound is tied into one wholesome and magical entity that casts a spell on the listener. I am no longer listening to the bass/lows mids and highs, I am listening to music like the way I did in my childhood. I cant get tired of replaying that cd of Dean Martin since last week, I play some songs twice or thrice in a session and repeat the listening everyday. Haven't done this ever to any of my CDs with the maratnz cd6002 as a DAC, in the last 3 years.

When are you getting it over :D.

Hi ROC

I expect some busy weekends this month, maybe early or Mid Jan would be good. This DAC really deserves a great transport. I am hoping to hear it using your Ayon CD-1 as the transport.
Hey dude....many many happy returns of the day !!!!.

Thanks!

Good to hear! The price has increased since the time I got it, hope you know that. Thats why I pre-poned my purchase as the increase was announced.

The PD NOS is nowhere compared to this one, where it matters most. This one gets the basics right, forget all other fancy audiophile terms.

Indeed, the price has increased from USD 1.5k to 2k. Gobble, very happy to know that this DAC is getting you involved in music.

Off and on, I have been reading on DACs. While we are on the subject of NOS DACs, has anybody heard or heard of Metrum Acoustics and their Quad and Octave DACs (NOS Mini DAC Octave). This is a small Dutch brand, but their Octave has created a stir (look for Srajan's review in 6moons: 6moons audio reviews: Metrum Acoustics NOS Mini DAC Octave). At its price (well under 1k euros), it seems to be a genuinely attractive product. Any feedback on this would be welcome. Sorry gobble, for the OT.

Regards.

Very Interesting Asit, not OT (and I don't mind) because it helps me muse about what other DAC I could have ended up buying if not this one.

The Euro 300 Quad DAC looks like a good bet for the budget buyer on HFV.:ohyeah:

Hey Asit....This DAC is one of the best kept secrets in the industry :)

A gem according to many.

Hey asit after srajans review, there has been a lot of discussion on internet forums on this Dac..apparently better than the Yamamoto as well.

I doubt there are too many people with first hand experience on this so the best way would be in posting on audiogon forums as there are some folks who have bought it there.

I think it would be worth waiting for a USB variant as well.
If possible you must get a feel of acoustic portraits new Dac.. Square wave did you get it ?
It would be a very well defined piece as Sivas philosophy on design would very much appeal to you since he too is a Hindustani music lover with lot of live music experience and voices his equipment accordingly.
I had heard the earlier versions and had loved it and apparently it has been refined even further

I doubt about the USB variant anytime soon as they have posted a link on their website pointing to a 6 moons review of a $495 Stello U3 USB to SPDIF converter where 6 moons recommending the Metrum Acoustics Octave with Stello U3 as the best combo for computer based audio.
And they have 6 -7 weeks lead time for any of their Quad or Octave DAC variants.

This is the thread on Audiogon which has a lot of info on Yamamoto and Metrum Octave dacs. There is also a comparison done by a user who knows Srajan well. In fact Srajan himself has replied on this thread. This is one of the rare occasions where Srajan did not objectively say which dac is better. Either he is genuinely undecided or he wants avoid the debate, after all he has given glowing remarks to both the dacs.

Gobble, square_wave, arj, ravi_d and Dr. Bass,

Thanks to you all. I am actually very tempted to order the Metrum Octave. Now regarding the USB thing, I somehow had the impression that the USB DACs are still sort of in the evolving phase, or is that a wrong impression only I have. OTOH, I cannot spend a lot on a separate transport (of course my 740c can initially be used as one). I was thinking more in the direction of a computer based arrangement for the last year, but then suddenly I discovered this DAC (very much like the way I discovered about Leben, and indeed that was some discovery). Now I am confused. Metrum's price by the way is increasing from the next year.

Gobble, sorry to have completely hijacked your thread. Please keep updating your DAC so that I do not feel very guilty.

Dr. Bass, that was very lovely thread you pointed me to. So now have you heard this DAC? Or has Charles received his DAC? He must have by now. What does he think?

Regards

Thanks Ravi. However, as is usual with Audiogon, you have to just click the date on the first reply, and you see the whole thread (as you have done I guess).
