Just got a Krell 400xi .... now what?

I am very serious about considering the TL design speaker .... played at the Mumbai meet. Have to get in touch with Mr. Iyer for some suggestions ..... Finding it a bit tough to splurge big bucks (btw, don't have any ...) on 'big' brands.

Just am not able to 'forget' the enveloping clean sound characteristics of the TL speaker exhibited there.

What TL's have you listened to?

avidyarthy - do you know? lyrita harmony are also TL speakers.
Edit - not too sure, but read the TQWT is a cross between TL and folded horn.

Yes, its a cross ...

Lyrita uses Fostex drivers which would need max. 25 - 75W. The Krell belting out 200 W at 8 ohms should be matched with some kevlar cone drivers ... @ 300 W at 4 ohms ... don't ask me more, am a noob at this level of interaction. Would make myself a laughing stock in here ... :o.

Hi Avidyarthy
Congrats on the amp. Saw a Magnepan MMG on sale sometime back on the forum. Why not think of pairing it with the Krell? Maggies love powerful amps of the Krell kind.
Cheers

First of all, congratulations are in order! A nice find indeed.

You seem to go for extremes - a tiny Topping and a muscular Krell:)

I also think very highly of Hari's speakers. I don't really know or understand the technicalities of the design, but for a DIY, self-designed speaker, they sounded awesome. I guess the only improvement needed was the cabinet finish.

Congratulation Avidyarthi. I know the feeling and the goosebumps your having. I used to own a Bryston and now have an Audiolab, is the Krell also clean, lean, sterile and analytical, cause I love that signature!

SPOT ON ..... heard it for 3 hours at the seller's premises. My set up is yet to come up .... might take a couple of months. Shall post pics of the 'battletank' within the hour, after taking it out from the light plastic cover ....

Seriously considering use of Wavecor drivers .... 30 mm 8 ohm soft dome textile tweeters and 7" balanced 8 ohms woofers for the Transmission Line 'folded' design speakers (from Hari) .... instead of 1" alumnium tweeters and 5.25" Peerless kevlar woofers.

The driver costs are going up by 3 times! Is it worthwhile? Any comments?

Klipsch La Scala's do not need the Krell power, as their sensitivity is 105db!!!

Quite a futile combination IMHO.

Price of the La scala's @ 45k??? Either the seller is desperate to sell them or something's wrong with the speakers. Too good a deal to be true

Just saw the AD, looks good as per pic shown. Someone in delhi should call the seller & pay a visit to check em out.

La Scala's :licklips:

La Scala guy I spoke to .... just out of interest ..... based in Ghaziabad, I think. Yes, too good a price ..... but too huge to be placed inside a decent sized living room ... its good for a huge location ... a hall maybe.

@ JK ........ the Yamahas have far too lesser power ..... this is a whopping 200W at 8o ... and double that at 4o. Krell sound is like ..... either one likes it or hate it ... too flat, clinical, neutral and dry.

Just came to know that Wavecor drivers .... ones selected are unavailable .... look like I have to settle for Peerless for the TL speakers.

Any ideas ... any other drivers that I could look for which are easily available here ...... don't want to go through the Madisound route ... too risky. Suggestions welcome.

How much a pair of the DIY TL stand mounts come to with the Peerless drivers in monetary terms?

Now, also thinking of using Fostex FE206eN drivers .... full range 8" for the TL design speakers. The Fostex pair available @ 17K in India.

ehehe .... I know, it isn't making much sense with the 200W @ 8o amplification. But, 'something' prodding me to go ahead with this!

Any comments?

Fostex full range drivers dont pair well with overdamped solid state amps. Something a bit mellower might pair well with them but the Krell likely wont

Avd... Dont go for some low end speakers... Settle once for all with some nice high end speakers...Let Krell take some good sleep over that time..:)

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
