Kannur HIFIVI meet!!!

for sure unleash, the speakers sounded so good to me in the current state of that room, and can only imagine what they could be given the right environs!!!talk about real world limitations ;).....cheers

Well looks like you guys had a warm cozy evening! The speakers look excellent and am sure they sound every bit as wonderful as the impressions above. Nice to see us members making these fun trips. Soon the brotherhood of indian audiophiles will be famous globally!

suri, as AE mentioned, you might want to consider taming your room a little. Might bring the best out of your witches! Guess its all that designing permutations and combinations that's digging a hole in your otherwise lush hairline :)

iaudio, whats up with that sleeve?

PS: Nice touch with the Statutory Warnings - indeed 'professionals' with social responsibilities.

hi unleash_me - yes, the room is "alive" as of now - and must "deaden" it a bit(should be careful and not "kill" it!)

hell, the hole looks like a bishop's cap!!!

edit - the loudspeakers are here only on a temporary basis with permission of wife - will have to be moved asap to audio room that i am going to build

Suri, is that a diffusor I see behind the equipment in second picture ofTitus's post?

After seeing this post of yours, everything in your house seems to be with the sole purpose of enhancing acoustics:lol:

Nice to see, even your pet is all ears and likes to sit in the sweetspot:)

hi santhol2 - yes that is meant to be a diffuser! the dogs like it when i put on the music because they know i will sitting still for at least half an hour - so they relax.

Unleash, Yes we did have a great day and not just the evening! One full day of great music, and then trying out some variations to see how the sound changed.

To all who asked how the speakers sounded,
I am not the best person to give you an objective analysis of it. I have limited exposure to high end speakers. But I can safely say that these are one of the best that I have heard.
TBH, most of the speakers I could quote in comparison wouldnt be fair comparison. They are not in this league.
As for my own person impressions of the sound,
These Witches fill the hall and even the adjacent courtyard (mind you that is a whole lot of real estate to fill)with beautiful, 'Live' music. It has the enveloping effect. And yet its not about high volume. Moreover even if you play music through Suri's set up at high volume, it doesnt blast you in the face. It remains as sweet, pleasant, musical and composed as it was at lower volume levels.
The Imaging was excellent. I noticed this especially with good recordings like "Temptation" from Girl in The Other Room by Diana Krall. Standing in the sweet spot( Yes, you read me right, STANDING!), there was not hint of sound coming from two points/speakers, rather it felt like Diana Krall was singing about 5 feet in front of me in the centre. However, this was not felt that much when we changed the source from Cdp to my laptop.
There is very good instrument separation and that so called airiness to the sound. The speakers are bass light without the subwoofer. Coming to the subwoofer, this TL sub has got the bass just right for music. You just dont notice it unless you turn it off. It just gives the right weight to all the instruments and nothing more. It seems TL subs are the way to go!
However as with systems with better resolutions, give it a bad recording and it will shout from the roof tops that this one is a bad recording. Good for some, bad for others.

The CD player as a source remains the undisputed king in our little shoot out. The digital source is good, but you would need a very good DAC. The under 300$ Keces did a good job but not as good as the CD6002. Hence while a PC+laptop may offer unparallel flexibilty, it is not the cheapest and most easiest way to a good source( this is coming from someone who has been playing all his music from his PC for the last so many years).

suri i must say you've got an enviable room a nice open space between the speakers to help depth immensely! what's the TL sub can you expand on this?

looks like you guys really had fun! a very 'professional' ;) meet oops.. mead :D glad to hear your speakers are loved too!

hey stevieboy - you be a fecking scholar!!! MEAD? - wow!

Quote -"Mead (pronounced /?mi?d/ or pronounced /mi?ad/) is an alcoholic beverage, made from honey and water via fermentation with yeast. Its alcoholic content may range from that of a mild ale to that of a strong wine. It may be still, carbonated, or sparkling; it may be dry, semi-sweet, or sweet. Mead is often referred to as "honey wine." - unquote.

wow! you learn something everyday!

apart from all that - (unleash_me) - hear this -

i have been down that road - those witches had their place in a "treated room" with wall-to-wall carpeting (rallynut) and the side walls treated with acoustic "deadening" panels - and the ceiling with deflectors -

the sound was 'STERILE'

a lush sound - a thick sound - a somewhat manufactured sound? - sounded like a high faluting Bose!

in fact, i have gone to great lengths to minimize sound absorption-
and get at least 40 feet in front of the speakers - so the 30 hz compression/rarefaction wave flaps my eardrums - instead of "vibrating" them.

i like my sound "live and raw" - and the less the "unreal" bass, the better.

and that is why i could really relate to your (stevieboy's) setup - IT WAS REAL!:clapping:

edit - used to have quite a few of the family musically inclined - and i used to listen on while they practised at home for their next gig - they were not terribly good - but hey! - they were playing real instruments (without amplification/electronics) in a large room with a high ceiling-

and i have spent years trying to recreate that experience! - God speed! - one day- i will!

haha or just perhaps stuck in a medieval time warp considering i'm regressing to the dark vinyl ages :D somehow mead always had a lovely ring to it. made me want to be born in those days with an earthy cup full of it. the only other drink i really like is bailleys irish cream. not much of a drinker otherwise. though my max was bout 8-9 double vodkas on the rocks at annual work parties... and just a few weeks back gave away a bottle of absolut to a colleague cos it was just lying there.. ah well the times they are a-changing

re the room yeah sometimes a bit untreated gives it a livelier feel. though i guess a tad at first reflection points and a little carpet not wall to wall helps. again i guess its system dependent. your tastes indeed match mine! cheers! :clapping:

Thanks to stevie bond, I too had looked up Mead when I saw his post earlier. As Suri said, you learn something new everyday.

yeah, suri's W.O.S do manage to create that sense of 'rawness' and 'being there' well.in fact the sofas were indeed put there just to 'treat' the room a bit in contrast to my first visit,eh suri :p?
at one point during the listening session iaudio was standing in the sweet spot,i was sitting on the left side of the 3 seater couch, and inspite of iaudio being directly in the path of the sound of one spkr(read, blocking the view/sound entirely for me),i didnt seem to miss it at all !!!remarkable speakers.did mention the same to him during the course of the evening, was stunned,to say the least.that is the kind of setup i would fantasise about,of course after the women and cars, heh.simple pleasures.cheers

Yes Doc, I distinctly remember you saying that.
As you said Suri's system is my new benchmark, or more like long term benchmark in my case!

@all,tomorrow early in the day,i proceed to kannur to sample suri's latest creations-"the witches of ecstasy".to all who are familiar with suri's journey in this fascinating world of DIY,these should take the cake, sonically speaking of course ;)!!!.in the little time i had to experience the earlier creations(read-witches of sound),i came away pretty bowled over at just how good a well thought of/implemented/whacky? DIY spkr could be,honest.i can only imagine what these would be like.TL design/100+ kgs a piece/scan speak drivers/silver binding posts/etc :licklips:.positively yummy, the thought of listening to them.and to think my cat5e(my italian buddy "simons signature cable") is gonna be supplying the stream of musical electrons to help create their magic...:clapping:.gonna be very interesting indeed.cheers

Reminds me of HMV!!!

More like HMS, His Masters Speakers!

Rallynut Great that you could make it to Suri's to check out the W.O.E.

Suri, I shall be there....

LOL suri, didn expect to see the pics up so fast!!had a great time as usual, with my dad present to add to the festive atmosphere .

@all,as for my 'uneducated' opinion in the short time i was there, here goes..

in the present avatar of the witches, these are speakers which make u do a double take of sorts, immense and magnificent to behold.TL design, approx 150 kgs a piece,2-way with scan speak drivers, front ported, hugely inert cabinet,in rose/teak wood finish.the knuckle rap nearly dislocated the 1st/2nd metacarpal joint of my right hand, painful to say the least :o.these could belong in any high end setup, such is their understated elegance.the design, the umpteen coats of laquer glaze, just beautiful.one would be very hard pressed to tell they are DIY!!!!not to mention their very high WAF as confirmed by his better half ;).

the moment keith urban took the stage,i was stunned, gobsmackedly so.they filled the room with their sound, making sure their presence was not taken lightly.the bass, warm, full bodied and soulfully articulate, with the TL sub helping in measure, had me smiling to no end.the sheer 'immediacy' that i had noticed with the WOS was still there, with the 'rawness' very much tamed this time round.delightfully enjoyable to my ears.

best listened to off-axis,voices stood out clear and unabashed, with a tiny trace of sibilance which i felt could be attributed to room reflections,as,the moment i went out in the courtyard(a good 20ft away) it dissappeared.the pluck and decay of acoustic guitar strings were spot on,with airiness in spades,i was just enveloped in great music.the highs were immaculately detailed with not a hint of brightness even at higher volumes.am sure the marantz pm17 mk2 drving the scan speaks had a huge say in this sort of effortless delivery of sonics.

playing pink floyds 'hey you',was a revelation to me.i am very familiar with most of floyds repertoire, even the more obscure albums, yet this was the first time i could literally 'feel' david gilmour extending his neck towards the mike to softly say the words 'hey you' at the start(just like seen in the concert dvds).amazing, bloody amazing.that was probably the best rendered floyd i have heard to date, period.what a shame i could spend only an hour or thereabouts in sonic bliss.

yet, what struck me was,as compared to the WOS,these were very laid back,so enjoyable were they to listen to.every cd thrown at it was rendered with calm,an unruffled sureness that was palpable.sort of like a 5.0 ltr, twin turbo V8 being asked to do a pedestrian 200kph.heh.suri seems to have some good ole british dna doctored into them, dunno how he's done it.

remember all, that these are speakers which have no measurements factored in their creation, just lessons learnt from previous attempts, and implemented.and HOW!!!!bellisima,..absolutely,positively,my new benchmark in how a spkr sound sound.suri,u are a master craftsman in my book now,and an extremely humble one at that!!

we,as proud members of HFV,have some serious DIY talent amongst us,with the likes of soundsgreat, cranky, and suri.we are indeed proud.hats off,..lets kneel down and pay them their due,in sheer, unadulterated admiration :ohyeah:!!!.me wants a speaker like this....cheers

Rallynut, Thanks for your impressions Boss, now i can go sleep over my headache.

Suri, Applause, applause and a whole lot of respect added to the whole lot of it I already have for you!

Rest of HFV( that goes for me too), get down to Kannur and listen to these beauties!
