Thanks a lot for the suggestions. You're right - a 7.1 ch AVR will eat up most of my budget by itself so there won't be much room left for good speakers. Overall, a feature rich and high end7.1 ch system with crap speakers doesn't really make any sense.

Since you have already said 90% movies, consider satellite based systems along with your AVR....
