Levelled the speakers today using a spirit level and had a 2 hour run of music
( TT + CD ).

The sound presentation is very unstressed / non - ported type.

I had the Merlin TSM for audition for 2 hours a few months back but this is a nice surprise in the sense that i hadnt noticed the degree of difference in a ported and non ported enclosure.

This one has a very natural roll off and i am wondering if i could do an A-B comparo with an equivalent ported speaker. Will be fun to hear the bass roll off for the same track / CD.

The highs are quite pleasant and given thats its been about 5 hours of play time at my home + about 24 hours burn in at Merlin workshop.. i would say this speaker will reveal itself more and more as time passes by..

will be an interesting book to read.. as we get into the pages..

Washing machine: important.

Speakers: Not important.

But hey, spending time close to one's new speakers: very important!

(and technically, it could probably be justified with timing issues, or something like that :) )

Curious. What does leveling of the speakers do?
==========================================

Keith,

looks aesthetically better especially in Mumbai flats where the floor level is not great shakes.

yes - i do believe speakers sing better when levelled ( in both the axes ).

Thad - hammertime....:clapping:

Thad - hammertime....

Even after googling I am still baffled! :o

Yes, I can certainly see the aesthetic point. See --- ha ha! No pun actually intended!

And the practical, of setting things up so that there is no possible vibration. Tiled floors are not as flat as they look, and often they don't even look flat.

Spikes? I wouldn't use spikes on a hard floor, believing that they were invented and intended for wood, especially carpeted wood.

There is some interesting thinking matter here: Spikes and Cones Whats the point? It's a great read for someone setting up new speakers, with thoughts about both the speaker/stand interface and the stand/floor interface. Forgive me if I mentioned it in another conversation only recently: write it off to the getting-old-repetition thing! :o

Cute pic. Curious minds, little hands. :)

Congrats Mahesh.

captain,

i sincerely appreciate your observation.

kids love sand play and i did involve them in helping me with this task. Filling sand onto 4 columns 90 mm diameter each and 22 inch height can be quite a task.

besides i thought it would be better to let them touch and feel things which their dad cares about so they are in turn careful.

ofcourse - helping dad means some nice rewards and and i made sure of that today. :)

many thanks once again !

Capt - i will be happy to have you over for coffee with the merlins :) whenever you are in Mumbai next.

True that.

Thank you very much for the tempting offer. I'll surely take it up if and when I visit Mumbai.:)

in my auditions the closest thing i came to buying was a Linn Majik 140. I had heard Razia Sultan that day on an all Linn setup and i was floored..but..

But somehow i never got around to doing it. something held me back... dunno what.. maybe spidey sense :)

Not that the Linn is not a good speaker but maybe my badluck or call it a turn of events.

Why did i get the merlin tsm ..?

a. Was looking for a larger standmount .. having grown up on 2 way standmounts.. i am charmed by a simple 2 way design. I never felt bass was inadequate for the kind of music i listen to. The Titan Monitor & Epos M12i kept me quite happy in the bass department.

b. For some stange reason i was always fascinated by the Dynaudios.. yes dynaudios.. especially the focus 110. I felt i missed out on sidvee's sale sometime back. But i later realized they are very good 4 ohm speakers and i did not have an amp to exploit them to the fullest. Somehow the 3 inch large voice coil always fascinated me very much. This is crazy but the 3 inch voice coil thingy is true :D

c. The Merlin TSM has a large 3 inch voice coil on its Morel MW164 midbass. Besides this is an 8 ohm speaker and the spec sheet says the min impedance is a very healthy 6.5 ohm so i figured my 50W Naim could take it. And yes .. it does very well..the Naim Nait runs absolutely cool.

d. I did read many things on the internet about the Merlin TSM being more suited for tube amps but many emails exchanged with Merlin convinced me the new tweeter was more amplifier neutral. That being said.. it may still be partial to tubes though i havent tested the merlin tsm with tubes and i dont intend to atleast not in the near future anyway as i feel quite OK with the Naim + merlin combo.

The new Renaissance tweeter on the Merlin TSM seems to be quite refined and unruffled but not too rolled off as well.

e. The sealed speaker means that i can push it a bit more closer to the rear wall also parallel to my equipment rack so the decor is maintained.

f. Many friends have suggested that with the kind of room i have a floorstander would have been more appropriate but simply having a room is not enough. My room is a shared space :)

g. The Merlin is a rather heavy speaker at about 12 kg each. To my mind - as far as speakers go - heavy is good.

h. I figured truthfulness to the recorded music is the way to go for longer term satisfaction. One can never fully know the "coloration" in a recording but the speaker must be able to follow the ebb and flow of the music rather than averaging it out.

This means that the speaker has to be more costlier with better construction and components and crossover design. I may get whacked for this :) but thats what i think / thought.

i. I liked that Merlin has only 2 models - a standmount and a floorstander and these have been continuously refined over the years with many incremental steps. No confusion with various models though the name Merlin MMM TSM BME is quite something :D

j. Arj had Merlins TSM MME with him for quite some time and i was encouraged by his response and PM's.

Anyway.. we have about 10 hours on the TSM now and maybe the next 50 hours will see it open up even more.

Havent toed it in as yet to my listening position but have placed the stands / speakers more aesthetically keeping about 6 to 7 feet between speakers as recommended in the manual.

As of now, my Merlin TSM have come with the standard Ovland musicaps in the external RC n/w and i am due to get the ones with the Duelund caps in a month or so..

I removed the banana connectors on the Naca 5 as i found myself uncomfortable with connecting them to the cardas binding posts and now the Naca 5 are connected to the speakers in a bare wire fashion. Plan to go in for Cardas spade connectors and solder to terminate the Naca 5 properly. Just wanted to terminate it neat and clean.

Despite the home audition i had, since Merlin had a new tweeter on it.. it was a calculated gamble of sorts. One never knows till one gets it home and plays it. The speaker design and the room interaction play such an important part in the reproduction of sound.

Congrats mpw.. Just saw this thread.. Looks like you are already loving it. Hope to give them a listen sometime soon.

"Captains log : Stardate 070616..We have entered a phase where the Merlin is beginning to show itself and is managing a nudge of silent admiration from friendly folks near and dear who dont venture into musical territory so much..."

one things is for sure.. the Merlin just plays the music as it is on the record.. no additions.. no deletions.. whaddaya you see is whaddaya u get !! :)

it takes getting used to... but i think once you get into what its trying to say.. it has the makings of a marathon runner.. one can have long listening sessions.."

Warp speed Mr Zulu.. engage !!

hee hee. If you had Transporter I would say "Beam me up scotty" so I can listen.
Looks like fantastic speakers. Congrats !

got these stands made by Magma from pictures and internet descriptions of the well known Osiris stand. I liked its simplicity and large size central pillars which is 90 mm OD and 5 mm thk and sand filled. The weight of each stand is presently close to 30kg.

I could source a pipe which was 8 mm thick but that would not be available in the lengths i wanted and we figured we are to fully fill these with sand anyway.

I looked at many stands .. the skylans, partingtons and i liked the simplicity of this. This is a fully welded stand and none of the weld preparation show on the outside. The finish is purposeful and businesslike.

I believe the stands are as much responsible in providing the speakers with more than just a platform to stand and sing on.. but a personality as well
( visually and audibly ).

Now i have placed the stands approx 14 inches from the rear wall ( speakers are about 6.5 ft apart ) and in line with the decor of my hall.. no protrusions anywhere and since the stand is heavy.. i am certain it will not shift even during daily cleaning routines etc..

I intend to keep it that way.

Currently the speakers fire straight but i may use the toe in as recommended in the Merlin owners manual later.

Ali - as promised the SF logo on the base of the stands. :)

PS : With deep respect and regard for the Osiris stands which are not in commercial production today.

PPS : This is my 3rd speaker stand and if you wonder why the PS.. i think you will appreciate the stand when you see it in person.

regards

Thanks.
- What happened to the CDp? Repairs !?
- Yes, a carpet would definitely help improve sound further.
- You need a change of the rack. A simple straight vertical one, with say four compartments, preferably in wood, would look real good.

This will be OT but here it is :-

a. The naim cd5xs was sent to dubai audio. Naim agreed to replace the laser section foc as an exceptional case. Very kind of them. Very professionally done and now the CDP is back with me and doing very well indeed. I am happy with the customer service of Naim ( apart from the product performance which is also fantastic ). Costly.. but long run VFM.

b. Carpet - is on the way.. Alladin is getting it

c. Rack - i know. I am trying to keep the eqpt as safe as i can from kids toys and footballs. I need some time till my kids grow up some more. I do not have the luxury of my own music room.

:)
