Hi

I'm looking for ICE for my i10. I don't want boom boom bass to play DJ type of music. I'm looking for a warm and musical sounding system. something like Marantz electronics and wharfedale/QUAD speaker (just trying to relate home audio)

I did some research and it looks like Hertz Hi-Energy series speakers may match my preferred sound signature

Hertz HSX 165 Components for front
Hertz HCX 165 coaxial for rear speakers

Now I am trying to find out a good head unit to drive above speakers

Could anyone in this forum please suggest good head unit matching my sound signature?

Appreciate your inputs

Hertz is good choice friend but why don't you go for Infinity or kicker which are good in audio and even better than Hertz. I will suggest you first have demo with the brands which I mentioned and then also take demo of hertz and ask from the dealer for good brnads as per your requirements and after that you decide that which product you like more.

In Head Unit I will suggest you to go for Pioneer only which is good and common for perfect SQ with every speakers or components.

Depends on the budget and your requirement. For reasonably sounding audio in car, you would need a head unti with digital time alignment.
The best audiophile grade HU in the market is the Pioneer deh-80prs which will set you back by 24k. It can also go 3-way active.
However if you don't need active HU look at Kenwood Xcelon series or any alpine or jvc amp with TA.
If you intend to use amps, then look for HU's with minimum 3 pairs of 4 volt RCA outputs.

For front components, the choice is spoilt. Focal flax series are excellent components, you can also check out rainbow soundline series or up the antic and choose morel hybrid or elate series. But these speakers need a good amp to drive their potential.

Else look at the lower series of Infinity/helix/focal/rainbow.

Could you please let me know where can I get Pioneer DEH-80PRS? I'm searching for this head unit everywhere in Chennai but no has any idea on that model

At the same time I'm also worrying about fake ones

Hey buddy,

You can try kicker amps or Rockford fosgate amps, those are pretty good. Regarding HU +1 to pioneer, not only quality but plays all kind of cd's(though the cd's are old). Sony won't read some of the cd's. I used to hv kenwood HU but I was unable to match proper amps and speakers(IMO).

You can blindly go with alpine at anytime, they are best for car audio, you won't regret for it.

Atlast I completed my setup with available stuffs but not satisfied

Today I installed new system for my Wagon R Stingray model replacing stock speakers (keeping head unit). As per installer's advice I installed the following at Car Audio Zone, Chennai (Installer Saravanan)

Blaupunkt EMA 455 Amplifier (through Line Out Converter from Head Unit)
Polk Audio DB6501 Component Speakers for front
Polk Audio DB651 Coaxial Speakers for rear

Sound quality is not good. Bass is boomy and distorting. Installer first tried to convince me that the problem is with the head unit but we tested with other head units as well. Same problem. Then Installer reduced the distortion and boomy sound but at the cost of bass. Now the bass is similar to my stock speakers (No bass). He reduced it in Amp section

Could anyone in this forum where the problem could be? Also someone direct me to a good installer? I'm not at all happy with the installation

Appreciate your inputs

hi visanj,

I almost have the same setup like you...

Let me explain how these guys works - atleast the guys who install.

1. They will fit everything and once they know that we are not satisfied with the sound they will say that the stock head unit is the problem, once we change that the sound will be good ( but changing the head unit will give a change in the quality of the output, but not a 100% drastic change ).

2. Only few of the guys who knows how these things works and they wont know much about technical stuffs (like matching the Amp, speakers and subwoofers technically).

Let me tell you how much hiccups we have in the ICE.

1. Head Unit
2. Hi Low Convertor For OE ntergation
3. Amplifiers
4. Speakers
5. Subwoofers

Any one of these is component which is not matching the other will always have problem and will get a hit in the quality.

As far the speakers concerned Polk DB6501 and 651 is really good pair of speakers, if you would have seen reviews its always rated more than 4.5 out of 5.

At this point i would suggest you to ask those guys to change the amp if possible.

Try for a Rockford fosgate, kicker or focal as per your budget & check what kind of cables they have used to drive the speakers from amplifier.

Just check the following things to understand more about the installation.

- Check whether a Fuse installed between battery and the amplifier (for safety)
- check who is the manufacturer for the Hi Low Convertor.
- Check what kind of cables they have used for installtion (there are cables which costs more than 10K and there are normal speaker cables also)
- Check the the polk component crossover settings.

Its a huge topic man :), Let me know if you need anything, am glad to help you out.

For reasonably good sound, I think u would prefer quality
Over quantity, first and foremost please get your car damped, the front two doors only if budget is an issue, then get a good head unit, as previously suggested, and pioneer 80prs and put in an amp and a pair of components, if budget is an issue go for the prime series from Rockford fosgate, as for the components, it all depends on again your budget, as for the 80prs you can get in touch with mr. Haresh Jethwani 098-41-197787, I think he should be able to help u source a unit, moreover one thing I wanted to clarify if wether u r interested in spending in one go? If u r then please specify your budget, and if u enjoy the process of upgrading and selling etc then budget really doesn't matter

+1 for damping. If booming is the main problem, it means some freq of bass is more resonated. Damping would help reducing this. Polks are really fine across the lower frequencies.
