Hello everyone

I was planning to get a media player with wifi capabilities. Have no idea whatsoever about the options.

WD TV Live @ 8.1k WD TV Live Wi-Fi Media Player - Buy Video Players Online at Lowest Price | Snapdeal.com How is this??

Asus O play mini is available on FK but it does not have any networking capabilities but is really cheap. Has got me interested. Will sacrifice wifi if this is good enough.

Main playback would be movies or music. Will be connected to Onkyo 5.1 3300 AVR & connected to a 40 FHD TV.

Kindly advice what should I choose?

the wdtv has good support god connectivity
all rounnd good user experieirnce

i have an AC ryan
but the WDTV works great at my parents

Hello Experts,

Can I request for clarity on the foll points?

1. WD TV Live is a media player that will play all my movies etc (along with photos, handy cam videos) etc
2. It has a internal HDD and I can insert whatever max capacity it can have and I can afford.
3. Is there a built in Hard disk that comes with the player and there is a slot for an additional IDD?
4. I have ordered a multi-region Pana 230 BDT, would it be still recco to go for a WD TV?
5. Can I connect it to my AVR & Speakers and use it like an extended music bank? (I have no audio CDs, all converted to digital format)
6. Can I push my songs on Android phones/iPad via WiFi to the WD Live TV?

I would be glad if anyone of you experts helps me clarify my doubts. Please do excuse me in case some of them are preschool/pre primary level.

1. Yes
2. No
3. No
4. Depends on your needs
5. Yes provided that you connect and ext hdd to it
6. Through Win 7 / 8 Yes - Through play to. Have not tried using my phone yet.

An additional information- The ext hdd attached also shows up on the network and can be used as a network drive as well. Very useful. Also its very easy to access any Win 7 pc on the network and play any media files on it through wifi / lan.

Thanks Beanstalk...

This clarifies it all.. atleast for now..

So if I just get a ext HDD, like a Seagate Backup Plus, I can still do the playback of all movies etc and no need to have the WD TV Live, unless I am keen on streaming from the internet.

In this case, any user experience of using live streaming of media? Anyone has subscribed to such service in India?

FYI - WDTV Live will not play DTS-MA but only it's DTS core. Others can confirm this. Not sure whether it'd make much difference. Also between the Pana 220 and WDTV, the latter would have more support for codecs than the Pana would have I guess as it's a dedicated media player. You may want to read up on this a bit as this is just an educated guess and not researched finding :) When I tried playing m2ts files directly on the Pana, I was not able to but WDTV plays it easily.

WDTV live does not support DTSMA or Dolby TruHD. It is buggy with AAC. Sometime it supports and sometime it does not. I usually re-encode if it is AAC. Other than that it plays almost all files and has simple user friendly interface.

Does this downmix dts ma. Planning to buy one as my xtreamer died on me.

I have a wishlist here - could you folks point me to the right model?

1) Max AND I MEAN MAX support for various file types etc. Which is the box that supports most of everything thats out there. For instance this DTSMA thingie mentioned above is a red flag
2) The ability to download additional codecs and install them so that the box can keep playing newer formats as they come
3) Like you connect a USB based HDD to a media player, can you connect a USB based external Blu Ray drive too? I have a lot of movies on DVD and don't wanna spend time ripping everything to HDD.
4) I also want to know where is the line between a media player and htpc? Up to what part of HTPC functionality can you achieve through a media player?

I think the Dune HD models should suit your requirements. Check it out.

Hi All

have been a member of this forum but was MIA for a long time.

I am looking for a media player and came across the Himedia Q5.

Any inputs on how it fares? I will be connecting it to my Onkyo Tx-sr705 AVR.
i have read around and it seems it has a lot of features and it kinds of suit my needs.

I also saw the WD live and Asus mini plus but for Rs5000 the himedia seems like a it has a lot of tricks up its sleeves.

Any feedback will be highly appreciated.

Cheers!!
