Providing Upscalled 1080 and marketing as true HD 1080 is nothing but cheating the consumers which I think the Indian Channels are doing as none of them are True HD yet.
All DTH operators should make this point clear at the time of subscription.

+1 It is a shame that our government (TRAI) is allowing the DTH companies to advertise and call 'upscaled' channels as HD. It is at the least unethical if not downright illegal to do so. If this practise is not nipped in the bud, we in India should be prepared for more of the same. SunDirect started this practise and DishTV is continuing it. At the very least, the DTH companies should be required to clearly differentiate between true HD channels, such as 'Discovery HD World', 'National Geographic HD' & 'ESPN HD' and the FAKE 'upscaled' HD channels, such as 'Sun TV', 'Colors', 'Zee TV' & 'Zee Cinema'.

The stupidity and the unethical part of it is highlighted by the fact, that all HD (Plasmas & LCDs) TVs upscale SD signals to their native fixed resolution, anyhow.

PS: MoserBaer tried to do the same with their initial set of Blu-rays, but we made such a noise about it, that they were made to recall the Blu-rays and they are now re-mastering them.

It is really bad that all the DTH operators are hiding the fact that most of the channels that they claim to be in HD are upscaled and they don't even admit it.

Dish Tv is offering Tru HD transmission and yet they have not updated anything on there website or publicly announced there offers in any type of media

I think that they are just uncertain about there scheme

yes nevertheless if one has to get started with HD its still cheaper then SUN,in the sense one has to shell out initially 9990 to get started.
Where as in dish one can choose the pack they want,in big tv he is getting a HD PVR and 3months free .

I have no idea how you are calculating all these costs, but atleast the 'SunDirect HD' prices mentioned are not at all accurate. First of all I bought the 'SunDirect HD' package for Rs. 10,000/ which supposedly included the set-top box and 'SEVEN' HD channels in addition to 135 SD channels. Basically the excitement of finally getting HD and also the attraction of watching the IPL in HD got me suckered in. It was only after I got the installation done, that I realised that SunDIrect was blatantly lying in their advertisements about quite a few things. First of all, I only was getting 'THREE' HD channels in addition to the IPL in HD which lasted thru the ned of the tournament and since then, that channel only shows a set of five HD still pictures as Wallpaper. Ofcourse there are 'TWO' FAKE 'upscaled' HD channels, which they are including in their count of 'SEVEN' HD channels, which they no where mentioned in their advertising, accept for a small print disclaimer, that some of the programming may be upscaled. ind you, it said "some of the programming", not 'whole channels'. In any case, even if I were to include the FAKE 'upscaled' channels, I still don't have 'SEVEN' HD channels. All i get now is 'THREE' HD channels plus 'TWO' FAKE 'upscaled' HD channels, which adds upto only 'FIVE'. So what happened to the other two HD channels I paid for. Then to make matters worse, SunDirect does not even have some major channels, such as 'Discovery Travel & Living, Discovery Science, Discovery Turbo, on their platform. Of the 135 SD channels that were promised, all we actually get is about 85 channels. None of the most popular channels in India are included in the Rs. 10,000/- pack. Lets assume the set-top box is for Rs. 5000, that means I paid Rs. 5000 for one years worth of services. That means approx Rs. 420 per month. Assuming I am paying Rs 150 for HD channels, and another Rs 50 for the FAKE HD channels, that would mean I pay approx Rs 220 per month for the SD channels listed below.

The following is a list of:

2. Channels I can add on at the listed prices (per month).
3. Channels I cannot get at any cost.

My monthly cost for getting HD and all the channels I currently get from Dish TV (Rs 320 per month) or Airtel IPTV (Rs. 200 per month), is as follows:

Total: Rs. 1278 per month or approx Rs. 15000 per year. Also, do keep in mind, even after paying this amount, I still will not get many channels, that I already get for less than Rs. 4000 per year. These include such popular channels as 'Discovery Travel & Living' (Probably the most watched channel in my house), History Channel, Discovery Science, Zee Cafe, WB, MGM,

To summarize, I as a 'SunDirect HD' user, suggest to one and all, please stay as far away from this company as you can. Zero customer service, lacks many major channels, channel packages are way too expensive, you have to pay mutiple times for the same channels, issues with poor signals, code flashes on screen every few seconds for almost a minute each time and to make matters worse they disable the remote during the time the code displays. The list of issues is endless and good luck trying to get them to resolve any issues or complaints.

That is called finger printing, which is mandatory for all the DTH player, it is to remove piracy from the cable wallas, if needed the cable walas don't have such thing, we can always switch to them...

My quick (may stupid) question to Gurus.

I am using dish Tv since last many years. I got the very first original STB Zenaga, taiwan heavy weight model with LED info Display which I never seen with any other new connections. It does not have HDMI.

I can see new HD channels when I re-scaned which are currently blocked. Do I need a new STB even if I activate them by paying the premium? i mean apatt from HDMI whats the special hardware/ firmaware do HD STB have?

@Santhuid the research but espn which has the rights for FIFA telecast will not be able to downlink HD in india next week to telecast fifa matches and also there is no carrier confirmed.All the DTH providers are waiting for commonwealth games where they could be able to telecast them on HD and also bag international tie-up for beaming the HD content.
Even DD is going HD in august.
