I got my Dish HD service setup 2 days back.
I already have a Tata Sky SD STB and I will probably revert back to Tata Sky for HD once there is a TataSky+ available with HD. I bought this connection mainly to see the world cup in HD. Currently both the Dish HD & regular Tata Sky STBs are connected to the TV, so I can switch between them quite easily.
Compared to my old Tata Sky STB, I find the remote of the STB to be not as easy to use. The channel numbers on tata sky are all 3 digits, while on Dish TV they are 2, 3 or 4 digits in length, so entering a channel directly is not as easy. The Dish TV STB shows the current channel using a 4 digit 7 segment LED display. There is no power light on the STB and even when the STB is switched off, the 7 segment LED display shows something. This is quite irritating as the setup is in my bedroom and I end up switching off the STB when going to sleep.
Initially the connection was set up at home when I was not around. When I first saw the pictures, there was a lot of jerkiness in the image. Setting True Motion to high on my LG tv did help a bit, but not a whole lot. After fiddling around a bit, I set the HDMI output to use 1080i @ 50Hz in place of the auto settings and that fixed all the jerkiness problems. So if any of you are using a Dish Tru HD service and you see jerkiness, then set your output to 1080i @ 50Hz to fix the problems.
There are 5 HD channels:
Zee TV HD - This is a 16:9 channel, which seems to use upscaled 4:3 SD source material. Overall not worth watching.
Zee Cinema HD - Again same as Zee TV HD, and best avoided
The next 3 are proper HD channels and not upscaled channels with a high res logo.
ESPN HD - This channel shows a static image and only comes alive during the football matches. The static image is seen even during the 15 min break. IMO this is worse than watching ads. The quality of the broadcast during the matches is very good. The major irritant with this channel is that they do not show the time & score during the match. They show time and score approx once every 10 mins. I have had to switch back to regular ESPN a few times to see the current time during a match.
Discovery HD World - This channel does show a bit of compression artifacts, but overall the picture quality is more a function of the program being shown, a lot of the programs seem to use upscaled 720p signals.
Nat Geo HD - Almost same as Discovery HD in terms of picture quality and issues with source material. The few times I watched Nat Geo HD, the programmes came with some chinese/japanese/korean script subtitles.
My TV is a 47" panel and it is also connected to my laptops via HDMI to play movies and my brother brought his friend's PS3 for a few days. I am basing my comparision on these sources. I havent played any good quality BluRay discs on the system to base my comparision on.
Compared to the BluRay rips, the quality of the HD broadcasts, as expected are not as good. You can see compression artifacts around players sometimes and you can also see other compression artifacts in the discovery & nat geo hd channels. All this is visible only when I am sitting within 3 feet of the panel.
If I am at the regular viewing distance of around 6 feet from the panel, the differnce in picture quality between the Dish 1080i service & Blu Ray rip played at 1080p @ 60Hz is not easily visible for static scenes. On scenes with a lot of motion, the 50Hz interlaced display clearly shows a lot of motion artifacts.
I do not know if this is due to the way the dish has been placed or due to the Dish TV service, but there are frequent pauses in the audio and the picture also shows data drop outs. In one case it seemed that the backend feed was the source of the problem as the picture went away while the ESPN HD & Dish TV logos were properly visible.
There is a stupid low resolution Dish TV logo on the bottom right of all the HD channels. The logo is in a bright red colour and you can clearly see that the logo has been upsized from a lower resolution image using a very basic upscaling algorithm.
I currently do not have a 5.1 setup and I am using the built in low powered speakers of the TV, so I can not comment on the sound quality at this point.
My aim for getting this connection was to watch the world cup in HD and the system is serving the purpose nicely.
The STB I have is a Zenega D-6000 HD. I paid Rs.3200/- + 100 rupee tip for the setup.
