Hi,

Just found, dishtv has added few HD ch to their list.:yahoo: They are-

1.Zeetv-HD (no.50)
2.Zee cinema-HD (no.60)
3.ESPS-HD (no.70)
4.Discovery HD (no.80)

Dish hasnt updated its STB.
Now does anyone knows any HD settopbox launched by Dishtv?

How many of these are real HD? Sun TV actually upscales some of its channels from SD to HD and calls them HD channels. Not sure about Dish TV though.

What I don't understand is why these guys don't give HD service without buying a DVR? Same with Reliance Big TV.

i didn't get you,but dish tv HD STB doesn't have any DVR.

I feel BIG tv is a better buy considering for just Rs1500 more one can get HD PVR with universal remote for existing customers it costs the same as dish tv HD stb. They also have higher amount of transponders and all their transmission is in MPEG4,where as DISH tv transmission is in MPEG2 except for HD which is in MPEG4,so big tv has the potential to give higher channels be it HD or SD or the same as competition but with lesser compression.
currently dish tv has the worst SD PQ compared to the competition.

Noted your point about Dish TV not having DVR capabilities.

MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 formats themselves have nothing do with the amount of compression they have by default. You can compress a MPEG-4 signal to death and you can get excellent picture quality from MPEG-2 too if you want. What matters is what the service provider has prioritized, image quality or the number of channels on the same bandwidth.

thats exactly what i am saying is with MPEG4 they have more potential ,say for eg hypothetically speaking if dish tv has 8 transponders but with mpeg2 transmission and its rivals like airtel also has 8 transponders but with mpeg4 transmission.Airtel will have the potential to give more channels or the same channels as Dish tv but with better PQ or more HD channels.

practically speaking Dish tv has the worst PQ,TS however has better PQ despite using the older MPEG2 but they have about 40% to 50% more transponders hence they can give channels with better PQ due to lesser compression.

@ANM
the A.S.S of TS is better then rivals they also have stable software and currently have the highest number of transponders.so once they shift to mpeg4 i think they will have the edge.

+1.. For the same reason I have kept my old TS connection parallel with SunHD connection.. compared to others, tata has better customer support.. The day tata will launch their HD service I will dump SunHD and trade my old STB for new HD STB (hopefully they will come up with a PVR capable STB like TS+)..

Well when i bought big tv when it was in BETA stage,it was hell with crappy CC,hanging problems etc but it made up with its PQ,when i bought my second dth connection i bought airtel,i strongly was considering another big tv due to the discount on the second connection via multiple tv offer. But at that time with problems in big tv i decided to go with airtel.

Tata sky was always a strong contender but the reason i didn't pick it is because they had the old mpeg2 STBs and transmission, nor did they had the best PQ.
but if TS moves to mpeg4 and launch HD, i will be dumping one of my current connections or both.

any news of exchange scheme for older STB holders. I am stuck with the older model and was waiting all along for something like this to happen before the world cup...

You do know that airtel has bad PQ right?
It has bad PQ compared to even SUN SD. I have both..

Well its still better then dish tv,if you want PQ get big tv.but be prepared for sluggish correction to crappy software update and the huge big tv logo.

Providing Upscalled 1080 and marketing as true HD 1080 is nothing but cheating the consumers which I think the Indian Channels are doing as none of them are True HD yet.
All DTH operators should make this point clear at the time of subscription.
