Hi
Thinking of buying my first AVR - 60% music 40% movie use in 24x13' living room. May start with 2.1 and gradually to 5.1.2
Getting the Onkyo NR555 from overseas @32K INR (probably no warranty in india on it). Do not have other options at that price point in that place.

Any feedback on its performance/suitability for my purpose?

Thank you in advance
Raj

Hi,

Some have reported issues with Onkyo in the long run and faced challenges to get it fixed. Parts + service a concern!

If you are more music inclined, look @ Marantz which is warm and provide great performance for music + movies...

Look at the NR series. New ones may cost a bit, a couple of pre owned models available in Hifiads.com

You can visit a reliance and audition a marantz there...

Where are you getting it for 32K? How much is it in India? Yes.. Will suit your needs.

Warranty is ruled out.. Whether you are getting it online, or any Onkyo dealer, keep the original bill safe.. Juz incase there is some issue with AVR, Onkyo might accept your AVR for service when you produce the bill.

I am getting it from Dubai/Kuwait. MRP in india is 60k, not sure of actual selling price. Matantz NR1606 is 46k or so.....bit outside my budget.,

Awesome! Thanks Elangoas. This really helps!

Wc.. There is also Onkyo TX-NR 1030 for 44K on the same site.. It is top of the line 9.2 AVR from Onkyo, with 11.4 Pre-outs..but doesn't support DTS X.. May be if you (or) your friend can walk in to that store and pick it, there can be more discount applied..

That is how i got my Onkyo AVR TX NR 818 from the same store.. it was 240 KD online.. but when my friend went there, he got it billed for 220KD..

BTW 1030 in India will cost roughly 120K +.. Choice is yours to decide between 1030 Vs 555.. Remember this point, it doesn't support DTS X..Try to bargain with this pointer..Try your luck..

Thanks Elangoas. Finally decided on Onkyo NR555 from Xcite as it was in my budget and may not really use additional pre-outs & 11.2 on NR1030 (apart from its weight that makes it hard to carry, especially someone else is getting it for me).
Would get AVR by Oct end.

Need suggestions for speaker selection please. I would prefer to start with 2.0 or 2.1 and eventually make it to 5.1 / 5.1.2. I am going through other threads to see if anyone has done it before (with similar Onkyo AVR). I am open for pre-owned speakers as well.
Any inputs/suggestions welcome.

Great.. Congrats..I understand the hassle in getting a hefty AVR..

Suggestion for speaker will depend on movie/music usage, your room dimensions and maximum budget..

Living Room ~ 24 x 13 ft (with opening into dining 12 x 10 .... L shape)..However will have TV viewing distance 11 ft....since TV unit and seating is in half part of the living room). Music:Movie is 60:40
Budget in mind for initial 2.1 ~ INR 22 - 28K

Think 2.1 is tough to squeeze in with your initial budget, 2.0 or at best 3.0.. Look for BS..

If I were to increase the budget to get descent 2.1 for my purpose, what would be good speakers and the budget? Also is it advisable to have FS given speakers are going to be across width of the room than length?

Received my new AVR Onkyo NR555 !
Ordered a pair of KEF Q100 (a friend getting it from US).
Alas ! Have to wait 2 more weeks to get going :(
