Online customs duty calculator (detailed)

slightly off-topic:

I would like to know If there is a limit on the import we can do from the online retailers (Amazon, newegg etc) even after paying the import duty.

(I mean, if I want to buy some electronics for higher value say 4L and ready to pay designated duty etc will there be a problem).

thanks in advance..

I vaguely remember seeing a limit of US$25,000 per year for a citizen of India. Not sure if this is a limit for buying dollars or purchasing goods.

I do remember someone from Mumbai who bought a camera worth over 1 lakh Rs from Amazon.

There isn't any limit to amount that can be remitted as foreign exchange for any transaction on the trade account - which includes the purchase and import of any item from an online retailer (barring some prohibited items like firearms, etc.).

However, as a practical matter, you may invite the attention of various departments if you import a high-value luxury item in a single large transaction.

Thanks for the answer...
Also, may be if there are too frequent imports from the same person in same category (e.g. Electronics), then IEC (Import Export Code) can be slapped on the buyer :)
Any opinion?

I spoke to a component seller who said the IEC is for companies. You need to have a company name and all related registrations and their numbers.

As a consumer you are not permitted to import to resell ( for profit).

Hey I can share something here. In India for electronic it is 36% solid.. Whatever your product cost 36% of the amount will be added for customs and duty charge. I have paid 36% of duty charge for my sony avr from USA.

Recently I bought an item (Preamp Kit) from ebay. The seller shipped on 07.05.2015 via Hongkong Post and provided tracking no. But, when i check the status, it seems " The item ( xxxxxxxxxxxxx ) is pending customs inspection at the destination as of 11-May-2015. what should i do for obtain the parcel and principally where the import items are holding for inspection.

It's about 21 days (incl. holidays, therefore, actual working days would be less) so I would suggest waiting a bit for customs to work their way through their backlog. Sometimes shipments get through customs really fast and sometimes they get stuck for a month or possibly more. If you absolutely want to get the package right away you will have to find the customs office the shipment is being held at and go there with your invoice and any other relevant documents and get the officer to assess duty and release it to the foreign post office for delivery. I'd say you should wait a bit before that step as meeting the officer could result in duty when in the normal course of things you may escape duty.

If you submit payment proof of paying by credit card or paypal it will be 42% Plus handling charges or if you are not able to produce any bill will be 77% on declared value.

Firstly if the said Amp is available in India than they may charge duties accordingly, they freely use Google, secondly the import of 2nd hand goods is not allowed and may have to pay fine on top of duty.

As manav told if they found out ( randomn inspection of goods) or if you mentioned in invoice as used goods, then you will fined 5K fine + customs duty of top.

Just mention the invoice as "Denon or Marantz amplifier" and submit the invoice. Nothing more. It will be thru.

Just wondering how this whole Duty thing works for the Dealers/distributors. Do they also pay 42%?

Importing for Commercial use and Importing for personal use have different Slabs, Commercial will attract lower import tax as the item will be used for commercial purpose/sale and will generate further revenues for the govt by way of GST and local taxes etc.
