Folks, After scouting hard to get a Philips 32" 5609, I ended up buying a Philips 32" PFL5505 Full HD. There is no Philips authorized dealer here in Pondicherry, so had to source this set from a Philips distributor.

Initial impressions:

Vibrant colors, nice SD clarity but sound is not so good. "Invisible" speakers make it sound tinny but loud enough for casual watching. HD performance is excellent. Connectivity options are good too - 3HDMI, 2 USB ports that play all videos out of the box and a plethora of other std. connectivity. Has a SPDIF port too.

One thing I noticed was this set is manufactured in China. I heard Philips outsourced its US LCD business to China-based Funai. I just hope it performs well for its life.

Can any 5609/5409 owner confirm where the set was manufactured ?? Thanks.
 
Funai is a Japanese brand who takes care of Philips ASS in the US. In India, Philips has outsourced its ASS to Videocon.

and about philips -good to say when comanies GM ,whom I used to know is not bothered about ASS complaint , you understand the quality . They are ot able to maintain quality in tried and tested product like CRT ,what they will do in LCD??

MUMBAI: Videocon Industries signed a five-year agreement with Philips Electronics NV to make and sell the century-old Philips brand televisions in India, the companies said on Monday.

The deal with Philips, a household name that once dominated the countrys radio and audio cassette player market before the Korean invasion, will help Videocon better challenge brands such as LG and Samsung in the Indian television market.

The move will help us get access to advanced global technology from Philips and help Videocon grow faster in the country, said P N Dhoot, president of Videocon Group. The consumer durables-to-telecom conglomerate will pay a royalty of around 3% to the Dutch consumer electronics firm, officials close to the development said. ET first reported the development in December last year.

Videocon will manufacture the televisions as per the specifications and standards of Philips, said Murali Sivaraman CEO, Indian Subcontinent, of Philips India. The agreement is very tightly done to ensure that there are very strict guidelines about the quality parameters to that Indian consumers get access to the best that Philips brand can offer, he said. The partners have formed a brand committee to keep a close watch on the designing, branding and quality parameters, he added.

If the deal is successful, it could be extended by another five years, officials said. In a statement, Philips said the move is consistent with the companys objective to bring the television business back to profitability. It could not be ascertained if the European major will make India a low-cost manufacturing hub for televisions through this deal.

Videocon is betting on this deal to check its losing grip in the Indian television market, particularly after a similar deal with Japans Toshiba ended and Videocon Bazooka lost its uniqueness as a premium offering in the commoditised durables market. Philips gives it a global television brand with high recall in India to take on the likes of Sony, Panasonic, LG and Samsung in the Indian television market. Besides Toshiba, Videocon also had a make-and-sell partnership with Japans Akai.

Experts, however, ring a warning bell for Videocon. They say it could be a repeat performance in the negative for Videocon as other brands such as Akai encroached upon Videocon brands. Philips is not really a premium brand and could cannibalise into the Videocon brand sales said Nabankur Gupta, founder and CEO, Nobby Brand Architects and Strategic Marketing. Videocon lacks a spearhead brand after its marketing and manufaturing agreement with Toshiba ended and Videocon Bazooka too lost its uniqueness.

The Videocon group , one of the few to survive the onslaught of inexpensive but good quality consumer durables from global makers, has been looking to acquire global technologies and manufacturing facilities. In 2005, it bought three manufacturing facilities of Electrolux in India and signed a licensing agreement to distribute products under the Electrolux, Kelvinator and Allwyn brands in south Asian countries. First generation entrepreneur Mr Dhoot had launched colour televisions in 1985 and Videocon, along with BPL, dominated the Indian consumer durables market in the 80s and 90s.

But the opening up of the economy opened the doors for brands such as Samsung, LG and Sony that swamped the market with far superior products and smarter marketing strategies including financing schemes with banks. While BPL faded into near oblivion, Videocon survived with different strategies. The Philips deal may just make things better.

(Reuters) - Dutch consumer durables major Philips Electronics has signed a 5-year licensing pact with India's Videocon Industries Ltd to market its television sets in India, a top official said on Monday.

"This is part of Philips global strategy to improve the profitability of its TV business," Mahesh Krishnan, head of consumer lifestyle business in India, told Reuters.

"We have signed a 5-year brand licensing agreement with Videocon where in they will source, distribute, sell and market Philips consumer televisions in India," he added.

Philips will be paid royalty by the Indian firm and expects the pact to boost its television sales in the country with the help of Videocon's large sales and distribution network.

Videocon in March 2010 failed a bid to acquire Finland-based electronics firm Elcoteq.

Shares of Videocon ended 1.74 percent down at 234.9 rupees in a weak Mumbai market.

As of September, Philips will no longer make televisions for the U.S. and Canada.
Instead, it is transferring that job to Japanese electronics maker Funai. The two companies agreed to a brand-licensing agreement in which Funai will source, distribute, market and sell all consumer TVs under the Philips and Magnavox brand names in the U.S. and Canada.
The deal begins September 1 and is good for five years. Funai will pay a royalty to Philips.

"This agreement secures continued presence of Philips and Magnavox branded TVs in North America in a model that safeguards Philips profitability in this highly competitive market," Philips said in a statement Tuesday.
And so begins the thinning of the herd. The television market is becoming an especially tough business, as prices continue to fall and more inexpensive brands like Vizio and Olevia attempt to edge out the traditional market leaders. Pioneer, a leader in plasma TV tech, also recently announced it would sell TVs but no longer make its own plasma panels.
This means that though the Philips brand name will live on in the U.S., the materials inside those televisions aren't necessarily the same. But the biggest blow is to brand perception.
Philips is a top-tier television maker--it won the Best of CES 2008 Best in Show Award from my CNET Reviews colleague David Katzmaier for its Eco TV--and Funai is, well, not as a highly regarded. This is a boon to Funai, and Chief Executive Tetsuro Funai's comment is pretty much the understatement of the year: "As a premium brand, Philips will add lustre to our existing portfolio."
To be fair, Philips has definitely struggled to compete in the flat-panel TV market. Though the company has attempted to differentiate its brand with Ambilight technology aimed at home theater enthusiasts, it still trailed the big guys, like Sony, Panasonic, and Sharp, in both production and panache.

Well to me its actually the other way round hope Videocon doesn't screw up philips brand.
Since the same videocon does A.S.S for kenstar and electrolux ,both known for their worst A.S.S.
 
I was in industry ,and looking at what ASS my bro got for his 4 yrs old crt i rate Philips worst!!!

In most of Indian companies "knowing the management" is the best way for getting best ASS , but GM of phlips ,my ex collegue completly ignored my message :mad::mad::mad:

I think he was "confident" of philips ASS!!

"I have finally lost my patience with Phillips customer care...anybody knows where to lodge a complaint against careless/irresponsible phillips customer care executives and their even worse service centers... they have vanished with my TV (parts) without trace...and are not bothered to call back and give me details...its 25 days now!!!"
