Playing Speaker Poker with mpws NAD356

mpw, Congrats on your purchase after a long review of speakers at Mumbai.
Some technical aspects:
The M12i uses a polyproplene cone material and i think does not use a cross-over for the woofer. The lows are naturally rolled-off due to the thick cone material for the woofer. Polyproplene cones are usually very light weight and fast responding. They sometime tend to give a plastic kind of sound to me (my personal thought though) but will be very suitable for certain type of music particularly the rock music and will sound very pleasing. The details are not that refined as per my information about the cone material. But the M12i can prove it wrong looking at its review. Looking at the FR curve it seems to be higher on the mid-range response with more emphasis on 800Hz to 3KHz region. But again this again in one particular room and not anechoic response. A larger room will show a much better flat curve such as yours. Will be eager to hear from you about them after your installation.

I had my speakers wide apart for a really long time while I sat there salivating, gazing at whats in between. :licklips: The amp and cd source you pervert! :ohyeah:

Then one day I brought them closer together and I found that all this while the left speaker was not really supplementing the right speaker and vice versa. Now there is a better sense of cohesion and the sound is "enhanced" so to speak.

Speaking of which, did you know that the missionary position can actually be enjoyed better with both the feet together (Your partners i.e)? :licklips::ohyeah:

So feel free to experiment with different positions and start with the speakers 5 ft apart. :) I hope your speakers are bass-reflex? Front or rear ported? ;)

oh

my

god.

Should I try it out with the TL speakers ....??? They are @ 8-8.5 ft apart ... less than a foot from the rear wall .... @ 2 feet each from the side walls.

Let me try it out now ... am back home early ... detailed report by tonight, I hope.

And Gobble ........ hmmm ....... at it? Am J .......

The anatomy does not matter... Go for it!! :clapping: Sounds bestial I know .. :D

I am sure they will sound better less than 7 ft apart than 8.5 ft apart ... :)

Did'nt take long ..... did it?

Fantastic! Even better soundstage ... even bass has increased, still tight and curt. But, its the soundstage that has reached a new level! :clapping::clapping:

Wifey was creating a ruckus, thats why had to come down (the system's on first floor), else wanted to spend more time.

My d830 manual says my bookshelves should be 6 feet apart however due to my desk layout the left speaker is usually 3 feet away and right speaker 5 feet away, the right speaker sounds distant so I give a 3db gain to the right one to compensate and make them sound equal from my usual sitting spot.

If I move away from my sitting spot I usually have to reset to default otherwise it sounds weird.

It's important to create that cuboid ratio. The distance between speakers will automatically decided as per ratio. Place your speakers as per layouts discussed.

Titling balance from one over other is not good, fr the reasons mentioned by you

Cheers
Venkat

The speakers are now @ 5' apart.

The rough distance from the side walls (for both) woofer centre to wall = 3.3'

Distance from the rear wall to speakers = 4'

The speaker postioning is now not all that room friendly, since the listening distance has taken a sound beating. It has cooly reduced by more than 3'. But the end result is very very superior! Also, did away the small toe-in that was given earlier. Now, both the speaker faces are 'flat' in the front.

So, this 'Cardas' thing ..... or near-about, as in my case definitely helps ...... THANKS.

Can you add one photograph of the speaker placement for all to see.

So the discussion is about placement now. Hmmm. I keep my speakers 5 feet apart and my listening chair is at about 7-8 feet from the speaker level. The speakers are about 3 feet from rear wall, left speaker about 3 feet from side and right about 6 feet from side wall. My chair is about 4 feet from the rear wall and f feet from side walls. I am happy with the results.
