Potential LG 50PK550 Buyer Group

This is a repeat of my earlier post about LG PK550 since I didn't get any response on that one and I am really curious to know.

I had a look at LG PK550 50" model today in Croma, Bangalore. It was kept right next to a LG LED TV (forgot the model number). What I noticed was that the brightness on the LED was much higher. They were both playing the same content and even when I set the brightness to 100 on the plasma, it was still noticeably duller than the LED. And plasma was looking totally washed out at that setting. Is it normal? The price quoted was 72k with PS2 and 70k without it.
PS - The ECO mode was set to OFF.

Bansal, sorry my earlier response got wiped out as the power failed just after I finished typing!

Well what I wanted to say was, that a showroom is the worst place to demo a plasma. LCDs and LEDs are always much brighter. However, if you look at overall picture quality and natural skin tones, colour reproduction etc, plasmas are the winners.

As I had posted on another thread, I recently had a demo on the PK550 at E-Zone here in Chennai. The picture quality was superb to say the least.

Compare plasmas only with other plasmas. If you compare plasmas with LED/LCD TVs, you would be disappointed. Another thing is, in the home viewing environment, plasmas perform well. No home would be as brightly lit as a showroom, and hence the plasmas perform well at home.

See if you can check out the PK550 isolating the other LCD/LED TVs nearby. This is what I did when I went to E-Zone on Friday evening. I asked the sales guy to turn off the LG and Samsung LCD/LED TVs nearby for 5 mins so that I could concentrate only on the plasma. The PK550 was mounted right next to last year's 50PQ30, and in the bottom row, there was a 42PQ70 and 42PJ560. All the plasmas were set to factory default settings and then I compared by watching National Geographic HD on Sun Direct HD. Picture quality on the 50PK550 was very good, and I saw an improvement over the 50PQ30 which was right next to it at the same settings.

The colour reproduction and black levels on the 50PK550 are definitely improved compared to last year's LG plasma range. Not sure how it would compare with the Samsung 50C550 though. Either one could be better, or they could be almost the same in terms of picture quality.

Pai @ Indira Nagar, bangalore offers for 64K with Airel DTH. But stock delivery will take one week.
Guys any better price available at bangalore?

I am not from BLR but have a suggestion, why don't guys talk to area or regional sales manager from LG and strike deal with him directly instead of going to dealers?

For OP, why don't you setup poll for this thread so that you will be able to get count.

Thanks NIV for the suggestion. I just called up

Chandramouli Sivaraman
PRODUCT GROUP MARKETING HEAD - MODERN TRADE at LG Electronics India Pvt Ltd

He mentioned that this model they are planning to bring exclusive with Croma :)

He too was surprised when I said, this is being mentioned/ said as available by other dealers.

But any case, he said it would be best to call Croma and cut the best deal with them.

Just an FYI.

Thanks,
Vivek Nath

He he h ask me, looks like LG Trade doesnt know where all there models sell

The thing I hate about Croma is that they'll connect a blu-ray player to those TVs only which they want to push. All the other TVs will be playing upscaled DVDs or TataSky. I asked them specifically to connect a blu-ray player to LG PK550 but they gave the standard excuse. How can anyone buy a high-def TV without previewing it with real high-def content!

It is very true that you have to get a proper demo before purchasing,... eZone gives good demo... Croma gives good price... ;) now we can utilise both... ;)

I am intrested in buying this TV and am from bangalore. You can count me in. I am waiting for devi international to get these TVs. Once non national electronic stores get them, the prices will come down.

Please share your exp with Devi. I am skeptical because I have read some bad reviews about this store with respect to service. When it comes to pricing i heard they give good offers.
Personally I do not have any exp with them, though.

Guys ,

At this point , I see following candidates for this model

1. NavaneethaKrishnan - aka - krinamob
2. Buswal
3. Srinivas29
4. Vivek Nath
5. Chirag007 (tentative)

"Santyinbangalore picked it from Pai international near ashoka pillar jayanagar

Now that I think more about it, that still doesn't answer the question though. Why are plasmas less bright than LCD/LEDs in the similar lighting condition? The lighting at the showroom was not what I would call bright. It was comparable to the brightness in a regular house. In fact, the area where they keep TVs is darker than the rest of the showroom. What's the point if a plasma can't show snow as snow (white, in stead of cream color).

I am thinking that there might be a problem with that particular LG display piece in Croma since no one else seems to think that plasmas are not as bright as LCDs. In fact, this website even goes to say that plasmas are brighter than LCDs!!

Guys,

I was at Devi International and Pai at jayanagar showrooms.

Well one , both dont have the LG 50PK550 models with them. Looks like LG Trade is really slowing the supply and croma seems to be only one having stock ( though some guys have seen displays at Ezone etc)

The prices mentioned were 66K in Pai (when they get the model) and around 65K in Devi ( without much negotiation). When I mentioned the possibility of 4-5 pieces to be purchased, they sure seemed eager to negotiate whenever they have enough stocks.

Thanks.
Vivek
