It was nice to see most of the attendees asking questions all through the presentation. As anilva rightly put - it was definitely a bunch serious about knowing the details about speaker building. I had a good time interacting with you guys.

Also many thanks to Anutone for being a gracious host.

I was reading a book on speaker building (David Weems) and came across this passage on Q. It looks like the value of 0.707 isn't sacrosanct

FWIW, T Antony has identified a Peerless 12 inch sub driver, which is available locally-either from Jeetubhai or Sumit Khanna in Delhi for around 2800. It can be combined with a 3 cft sealed or ported alignment, and if anyone can lay their hands on a suitable a plate amp , can easily do a good sub for well under 15K, which will kick ass. While it wont equal a high end DIY sub using drivers like a Dayton or Shiva which cost $200-250 + shipping, it is a good entry point for anyone wanting to enter DIY on a budget. In case anyone wants to get enclosure details, please PM me with your personal email id, I will mail you diagrams of enclosure, baffle and sheet cutting, using 3/4 inch MDF.

Can this be made into a separate topic under
DIY with details of the driver too? If there is
a group buy for this driver, I think there will be a good response.

Hi,

The 0.707 is a good starting point in simulations to understand going about a flat response within limitations of a cabinet. Not sacrosanct at all but very helpful.

From there ideally you may want to go (+0.707 - 0.85 & 0.90) are often quoted for 'Bassy' speakers OR (-0.707 - 0.500). The second goes into the realm of 'very flat', meaning, there are no frequencies exagerrated, unlike 0.85 & above.

The book you're reading is a good one - Weems & Koonce. The one George mentioned is also very good - 'Cookbook by Dickason'. I've got both and was a difficult read, I think the idea is to keep trying till something gets in , its usually "Eureka" after that.

Regards.

One thing that I missed during the session was tips and techniques for mounting the drivers. Can we have a discussion on that here please?

Very interesting point, and yes we didnt cover that. I have learnt by trial and "costly" error that mounting drivers needs to be done with great care. My first time accident resulted in puncturing the rubber surround of my Scan speak midwoofer! Screws used should be Philips head, to avoid the screwdriver slipping and doing damage, ideally use a cordless screwdriver.

Ordered a UA701 kit from parts-express. A friend of mine who is dabbles in woodwork has offered help with cabinets.

Any chance of sharing the presentations online for the unfortunate fellows who couldn't attend
and is there any videos of the presentations?

No videos were taken, but we can consider the possibility of hosting some of the presentations here, for others benefit.

I have the videos with me ( 720p recording ) i.e about 8 GB of content that I could accomodate in my phone. Will be converting to 480P or similar and try uploading again.

Not all the session was coverd (was late ) but will make available what I have.

The other day I had a single file (400+ mb,4.42min of video content) take about 2+ hrs and finally the response is some timeout, another try and the same result.
If this is not feasible from my side I can have the contents in 2 DVDs posted to any suitable member who can upload conveniently .

We will be starting a new thread shortly here w.r.t the 2 way speaker system that T Antony had designed using locally available Peerless drivers. The plan is to document it in some detail.
