Illusion - Checked at Lamington Road and your price for Seagate is better.
3 TB external at Lamingtion road is Rs. 9,400/- for Seagate and Rs. 10,500/- for WD.

Prices are surely dropping fast................got a quote of 9K for seagate & 9900 for WD....dealer asked me to wait a fortnight if the need was not urgent....expecting 500 Rs further fall......

Already own a 2TB internal & 1 Tb external WD ...... am gonna buy WD only.....extra is worth the peace of mind i get over Seagate...

For those who are looking out to purchase an HDD, its seems to be a good idea to wait for a month or so if the need is not urgent. I'm sure the 2 TB's will once again reach the status of "Value for money" soon enough.

From personal experience I too have sworn off Seagate for now. Even my repair person says that they get more of Seagate HDD's that are dead than WD's. I have 6.5 TB's and almost out of space but will wait a bit for prices to fall further as I dont have an urgent requirement.

Illusion - Keep us posted on updated prices. BTW where did u get the 9k price from?

3TB HDD now at $130, at the current conversion rate comes to about R 7000( max).
Check it out on deals2buy.com and search for Buffalo 3TB, its from newegg. Maybe around thanksgiving they come to about $100 for 3TB, i will be the first to buy one at that price ;)

Check amazon and newegg for seagate 3TB for $120!!! Oh how i wish the $ was 50 or below ;) Even then it sounds like a great deal at 6500 for a 3TB.

As per My person experience go for WD for after sales service. If seagate failed, you have to visit there customer service. Here in Mumbai you have to wait in long queue. You have to go through same pain while getting replaced goods. Replacement also takes time as replaced product is coming from Bangalore. while WD pickup& Drop the drive from your home. In WD, they are sending product from Banglore only but in my case I received replacement of WD earlier than Seagate

I have used WD and Seagate RMA service.

What you said about WD is correct. But you'd be surprised to know about Seagate.

I had a 250GB Seagate HDD which died 18 months ago. I was also under impression of long ques and other difficulties about Seagate RMA. New 500GB was 1700-1800. So, never bothered to get it RMAed.

Then HDD prices went up and up and up. Then I thought of getting the Seagate 250GB RMAed. Searched the net and I came to know that you create a case and courier the defective HDD to:

Order Number#: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
ACCEL FRONTLINE SERVICES LIMITED
No.173, Mount Poonamallee High Road,
Porur,
CHENNAI 600 116

And I was pleasantly surprised to receive a sealed RMAed HDD in few days by courier.

So, the only difference between WD and Seagate RMA is that you have to send defective HDD by courier at your own expense whereas WD gets it picked up at their expense.

Note: I am not commenting anything on WD or Seagate failure rate. I am also of the opinion that WD is more reliable.

I was not sure whether they will accept through Courier. Only I know that they have pickup service for the remote customer (more than 60 km from service center). As service center was nearby, I decided to send there. When I asked, whether you will courier replacement directly at my address. Reply was "No", You have to come again and collect the same.

In this case, Sending product through courier is best option instead of going at service center.

Mukesh, What was the condition of the replacement HDD and how much courier charges were incurred?

It was a sealed hard disk wand "Seagate certified repaired HDD" was mentioned on the label.

It was as good as new.

I paid Rs.160/- to DTDC to send it for Seagate RMA and they sent the RMAed HDD at their own cost.

Black friday deals( to open on Nov 24)- a 3TB is for $100!!! That too the Seagate Back up Plus, what a time if someone is there in the US!!!

If I buy an HDD in U.S(through a friend) online or at a store, what are the implications on warranty?
Of course I'll use it here in India.

I think WD has the international warranty on the HDD. Check out there website for details, so I am presuming even Seagate will have the same international warranty.

Thanks
