TOKYO: Sony Corp recalled 1.6 million Bravia flat-panel TVs sold worldwide since 2007 after learning that a faulty component may cause them to melt or catch fire.

Sony recalled the liquid-crystal display TVs after a September incident in which a customer noticed a small fire and smoke, said Yuki Shima, a Tokyo-based spokeswoman for the world's No. 3 maker of televisions. Eleven incidents have been reported in Japan since 2008, according to a company statement and no injuries have been reported.

A faulty component in the backlight systems may be the source of overheating that can melt the top of the television, Shima said. The same transformer is used in the five Bravia models in Japan being recalled, according to a Sony statement.

There haven't been any reports of overheating incidents outside Japan, the statement said. "Sony-related recalls are following one another and that may ruin the company's brand image," said Keita Wakabayashi, an analyst at Mito Securities Co who rates the stock "neutral plus."

"It could impact the stock negatively if the recall causes a significant amount of expense." Sony rose 1.4 per cent to close at 1,517 yen in Tokyo trading. The stock has plummeted 48 per cent this year, compared with a 16 per cent decline for the broader Topix index.

Sony isnt recalling any tv's from India!

Didnt expect this from Sony.

"The Japanese electronics major said it would be providing free repair of the affected products to its customers in India if a request is received. "Sony service person will visit and check, and repair if a faulty component is found, free of charge," the company said in a statement. Affected models in India are KLV-40 W300A and KLV-40 X350A. "We have sold 3,200 units of the affected models in India between 2007 and 2008. This accounts for 0.2% of the total products sold. However , till now, we have received no complaints," it added"

Well as I said no recall in India unlike other countries. On request they would visit and "check" the product.
