Hi all,

Need help to set up a fresh new system.

Avid music listener, genres range from Classic Rock to Jazz and Indian Classical to Western Classical (and off course old hindi film music). Also enjoy Movies and a proud collection of Music Concert DVDs.

Room is 10ftx22ft with 42"TV (and sub woofer,front/central speakers) at one end of the 20ft length and seating at the other end (french windows behind the seating at 22 feet)

Need guidance on:
What's the best set up for around Rs 1.25 lacs to 1.5lacs
Will an AVR set up deliver good music too (with two good front speakers?) or does this need to be enhanced by a power amp?
Or do we need separate HTS and separate Hi Fi systems

Any suggestions on the equipment and models etc....hugely welcome

R

Hey Buddy

As mentioned by you, your most of the usage for the setup will be music...

So you have two options :
1). To go in for a separate AVR and Seperate Integrated Stereo Amplifier
or
2). To go in for a High End Amplifier Receiver from either NAD or others...

Preferred AVR and Integrated Amp Combo Will be :
AVR - Denon - 1910
Integrated Amp - Cambridge Audio - 640/650A
Approx. 70K

Preffered NAD 5.1 Amp will be :
T Series - T775
But this will be more than a Lakh itself...

Apart from that for good music, with good speakers, and amplifiers,
dont forget to go in for good cables...

Keep approx. Rs.8K for your Stereo and 5.1 setup..

You will require a Spkr switcher as using two amps
Rs.4K for the same...

So your approx. 80K will be over in this only...

Now as you are left with 70K, its better to start with Floor Standers like :
1). Q Acoustics 2050 - Rs.37.5K + VAT for music..
and
2). Q Acoustics 2010 - Rs.11,500 + VAT (Rears)
3). Q Acoustics 2000c - Rs.11,500 + VAT (Center)

With Floorstanders, you wont miss much on subwoofer...so you can postpone the same and purchase it a bit later...

Now one main thing that is left is the Source...

You need one good DVD Player for 5.1 and a decent CD Player...

For CDP prefer Cambridge 540c...

For DVD prefer Oppo...or Pioneer or Sony...

But, you can even buy Cambridge DV99, its good for both Movie and Music....

So, i think after all discounts, and all your above setup excluding Subwoofer will be over in about say Rs.1.6 Lakhs approx.

Given that you seem to be more interested in music than movies I would have suggested a regular stereo only setup and not a 5.1 setup. But then as you seem to have good music concerts in DVD I am suggesting you something different here.
1. An Oppo Blu Ray or even just a DVD player imported from US or just a Cambirdge Audio DVD player - 15k
2. A dealer in our forum has an Ex Dem Arcam AV280 receiver for Rs.70,000. I have heard this and can say it performed very good for stereo. The only AV receiver I have heard that performed this good on stereo as in comparable to a stereo setup.
3. With the remaining 65k you chose to go for either a 2.1 setup in case you need the effect for movies as well or go for a floorstander alone. Quad 22L2's probably a little beyond at 80k, but can be negotiated I suppose. Or just a Quad 11L2 or 12L2 for about 35k and a sub for the remaining 30k. There are quite a few combinations here.
Now this is not a 5.1 setup and so the surround is lost but then I think you will get a wonderful setup for Classical and Jazz CD's and DVD's.
When budget allows you can later add the remaining speakers if you want so.

In case you would want a 5.1 setup in that budget then actually for 80k I think the Usher S520 series would be the best you can get.

Alternatively, if you ready to give up 5.1 totally and focus on your music then you can go for a different combination. You would need a DVD player still and so a 15k would go on that. Now, you can either get a very good CD player for CD's or an external DAC to get that good stereo sound out of the DVD player. So, the budget of 1.5k would probably be split like 40 + 40 + 70. This would give rise to many combinations again.
