Suitable speakr for Marantz PM-6003

You should buy a BS for two reasons. One, because of your budget. 30k is barely sufficient for FS.

Secondly, you mentioned good BS or FS. Of course a good BS. You may be off the mark if you look for 'good' BS but a 'normal' FS. For a 30k BS equivalent FS may be costing 10-15k more.

U mean to say that MS_Mezzo or Aviano in the range of 20+ and 25+ should be better than Wharfedale 9.5 (30k range FS)

Yr signature says that u r using PM6003 as well.... Which speakers hav u paired with the 6003? Bookshelves...

then there s this KEF Q300 that needs to be considered definitely ....with all the glorious reviews by what hifi..

I am using a DIY which would go and make space for the new speakers, most probably some BS. I am not averse to FS but they will have beat the BS during audition. Of course I would be auditioning both BS and FS.

I can tell some popular combinations of BS speakers with PM 6003. Final choice will depend on what you like to hear. Eg I prefer a good tight punchy bass. You can auction the following:-

Wharfedales 9.1/9.2
Dali lektor 2
Mordant Short Mezzo 2
Monitor Audio BR 2
Quad 12L2
PSB Image 2

If you insist on FS then you can choose FS in same lineup. Some of the models are discontinued so you may get them cheap.

Carry along your amp and source with you. You can ask dealer in advance if they have PM 6003 for audition. If not then take yours along. Auditioning with a different pair is as good as no audition. Possibly also your source like CDP or streamer and obviously your music.

Bass n treble normally has a PM6003 for audition. You can try quads, wharfs and monitor there.

Larkozy will have NAD when you go for PSB. So carefully plan the audition.

Try to go for a little open speakers so that you can balance the Marantz sound. I would suggest you audition these which should be in your budget. If you have 30k you can think beyond Wharfs imo:
1. MS Mezzo 2
2. MA Silver RS1
3. B&W 685 - Has got really great reviews
4. Dali Lektor 2

If you have the amp, I suggest you take that for the auditions if they dont have one
you can also add Quad 11l2...they are apx 28k.

Hi yahoo,

For Marantz PM6003 I suggest BS models like MS Aviano-2, KEF Q300, PSB Image B-6 or DALI Ikon series.

Pl avoid FS like Wh 9.5, as the amp is under powered. This I tell after listening to this combo for a week.

If you are particular about WH 9.5 FS then get Yamaha AX 497 or AS-500 model amps as they can drive the wharfs FS effortlessly, I have also heard this combo and sounded nice.

Just my 2 cents.

Murali sir,

Any idea on AX397 ? this is to drive the mission m34i speakers, have you heard that amp anyitme?

i have got Marantz PM 8003...im driving quad 11L classic speakers...recently brought Solitone X Interconnect...i feel a amazing quality of sound with them...i have auditioned MS Aviano n wharfdale evo 30 before choosing them...personally to my ears...quad sounded best...so i suggest you to once hear Quad 11L Classic before you decide any

Ravin,

Since you have both Marantz and Carnival 6, can you give your impressions on that pair? will it be an okay or a decent sound?

Thanks,
KVN

Hi Kevian,

I am not an expert reviewer and neither am I good in expressing the terminology that audiophiles use. I just trust my instincts.
The Mordaunt Short Carnival6 tower speakers are very easy speakers to drive but can become difficult if you want to get the sweet spot like a possessed audiophile.

I spent several hours listening to the same track over and over again while repositioning the speakers in several positions, measuring each one of them and noting it down on paper like a nerd..... It's a good learning experience with this set of speakers.

The sound reproduced from the Carnival6 is neither too strong on the bass side nor too sharp on the bright side, instead has good mid range tones within the listening frequencies. It is unlike the Avant 904 that I previously owned which was more bright and lacked the bass. What it lacks is image and openness of the sound. I have actually bi-wired it with silver coated copper speaker cables for the highs and copper for the lows to extend the sound frequencies from normal speaker wires.

When the Carnival6 is connected to the PM7001, things change and the speakers become more active and lively.

During the audition of these speakers with Marantz PM7003 and PM8003 and CD5003, I played the following tracks:

Chris De Burgh - Lady in Red (very smooth with PM8003, the sound was flowing in the wind)

Enya - May It Be (the woofers could barely manage with the extremely low bass sound without distortion)

Eagles - Hotel California (good and smooth)

Extreme - More Than Words (the sound of the fingers plugging the guitar chords were noticable but it lacked just a little brightness)

Lady Gaga - Nothing Else (the sound of the bass guitar in the background seemed overshadowed with the overall sound, unlike the wharfedale diamond 9.3 that I had listened to before)

Dire Straits - Private Investigation (the sound of shattering glasses during the interlude of the song lacked the sharp and shrill sound but was audible)

Dire Straits - Telegraph Road (the beginning stage when the saxophone is played is accepted but not as good as I listen to in my car)

David Guetta Feat Akon - Sexy Bitch/Chick (for this song, I connected the subwoofer to enjoy the bass)

Kenny G - Sentimental (good)

Yanni - Live at Acropolis (managed to keep the sounds on the stage in the forefront and put the clapping sounds in the background away from the centre stage)

I would suggest to audition the speakers with tracks that you usually listen to most often.

Sir are u sure that PM6003 wont be able to drive the WH9.5 s...
Then I hav to reconsider for the amp...
Does Yamaha AS-500 hav similar tonality like the Marantz?? and do the yamaha match well with Wharfedales...??

Suggest to make the investment and go for the bigger Marantz PM7003, which is an outgoing model since it has been replaced by PM7004 now, instead of the Yamaha AX-497 if you want to drive the Wharfedale Diamond 9.5 towers.

Or,,, Switching from Marantz Pm6003 to Yamaha As500 wd be a better option?

I have auditioned the Yamaha AS-700 twice now, will be doing it the third time soon. In my first Audition the Amp was paired with WD Atlantic GE500, which is huge.

The amp was able to drive it effortlessly and the amp reproduced very detailed sound stage.

The second time, the Amp was paired with Mission M34i, which I felt were underpowered for Yamaha's might, but the sound stage again was very detailed and bass was deep, even in the under powered Missions.

There is a big difference between the Marantz and the Yamaha Amp, Yamaha 500 is 85W while Marantz is a 45W Amp.

Now, The WD is rated at 150W for the peak, which definately will be difficult combo with Marantz but the big catch is that everything depends on your own ears and the room size.

You should audition the combo and take the call.

P.S.: I will be doing a demo of Marantz with WD as soon as the Marantz stock arrives, you can look at Yamaha NS-555 speakers as well, I will be doing that audition next week.

.

Ok I agree that tha Marantz Pm6003 with 45watts of power wont be able to drive the Wharfedale 9.5,,, but Can the Yamaha As-500 85 Watts drive the Wharfedale 9.5 well?? Any audition experience? and the wharfedale Atlantic GE500 are real huge 200 watts speakers... The AS-700 is rated 90watts... not a huge diff between the AS500 and As700 toooo

You must have a look at the speaker Amplifier Power Range. Its about 15-180W for Wharfedales.

Your Marantz has 45W at 8ohms. It will get much higher during playbacks. You wont be playing at full volume in any case.

Another specification to keep in mind is the speaker sensitivity. A speaker with higher sensitivity would be easier to drive.

In any case, whatever is the opinion, you must listen out yourself. Your doubt about PM6003 will be cleared in one day what it can drive what it can not once you go for audition. If it can not drive then drop it. Going by hearsay may cause you dearly. Dont mind but You seem to be reluctant to audition.

If I would be in your place, first thing I would do is to audition to clarify everything after taking opinions. Just my two cents.

Even I am waiting for an audition...I am not in Mumbai, Delhi or Chennai or Kolkata where the auditions can be arranged.. I am from a small town where there are no audition places to go for... Thats the reason I a m completely getting dependent on hear-say...
