Tamil film music in Chennai

Venkat, Would be great if you can also tell the movie names along with these songs.

These are songs I have heard on FM, mostly Radio City. I listen to FM for at least an hour a day. Unfortunately these stations do not mention film name nor the singers. I will try to find out the film names and post. If someone else who is more thorough with Tamil songs can help, it will be great. In addition, there are so many singers now, it is difficult to recognise their voices.

To make a honest confession, I have taken a liking to Tamil film songs only recently after heavy pressure from my wife and my niece. But these songs are really good. Actually I am quite surprised, but Tamil music directors seem to be churning out good songs on a regular basis. Every new film seems to have a few very good songs much like the 1970 and 1980s of the Hindi and Tamil films.

Cheers

If you are buying Tamil film music, some really nice numbers have been released over the last few weeks. I am showing below a list of songs you could take with you. If you are in Chennai for a few days, contact the shop I told you about and he will record these songs for you. Wherever I could, I have mentioned the film name within brackets. On a good system, these songs sound good. Song No 15 has some lovely guitar and mixture of Tamil and English words in a pleasant song.

Venkat - I never fail to get surprised over your Tamil song selection.

On a side note, I have always been a die hard fan of Hariharan but he has simply shattered me with his music in Modhi Vilayaadu. Admittedly it is a joint effort with Lez Lewis and our own Deva. Still, the album left a bad taste in the mouth. That is just me, of course.

For the OP - a few personal favourites of mine (apart from what people have already mentioned, that is)

[Song title - Movie - Artist (wherever I know the detail)]

1) Ulagil Yentha Kaadhal - Nadodigal - Hariharan

A song which is mesmeric in quality largely due to the divine voice of Hariharan.

2) Akkam Pakkam - Sadhna Sargam - Kireedam

Another song with a transporting quality. Sung dreamily and a bit huskily by Sadhna Sargam.

3) Vizhiyil un Vizhiyil - Sonu Nigam - Kireedam

For me this is the crowning song in this movie. Sonu's voice typically soars in the higher frequencies. This song is different in the way it portrays his control lower down in the octaves as well. A very melodic song with likeable lyrics as well.

4) Poo Vaasam Purappadum Pennae - Vijay Prakash - Anbe Sivam

An Ilayaraja melody which hooks your heart and refuses to let go till the end. Considering that Vijay Prakash is the same guy who sang the song 'Om Sivogam' in Naan Kadavul, is definitely a shock. A versatile singer without doubt.

5) Om Sivogam - Vijay Prakash and chorus - Naan Kadavul

For shock value this can be listened after the above mentioned song to just see the different styles of singing the same artist can showcase. In itself a very energetic song. May not be to everybody's liking. But nevertheless a stirring song.

6) Kannil Paarvai - Shreya Ghosal - Naan Kadavul

A haunting and complicated melody done full justice to by the talented Shreya. Not even the most complaining critic would accuse Shreya of not being a native Tamil speaker with this song.

7) Yei Pennae - Shreya Ghosal - Thendral

In a movie that sank almost without trace, Vidyasagar's music shone brilliantly. One of Shreya's best sung Tamil songs. A fast paced, yet melodic number that will have you humming with it very soon

8) Vizhigalin Aruginil Vaanam - Ramesh Vinayagam - Azhagiya Theeye

An offbeat movie which was a very good one. It also had very good music by a newcomer - Ramesh Vinayagam. An evocative song with good lyrics as well.

9) Dil Mera - Srinivas, Mathangi - Azhagiya Theeye

Despite the Hindi words starting the song off, it is still quintessentially a Tamil song in composition and execution. Mathangi is wonderfully exhuberant in this song aptly supported by Srinivas.

10) Chudithar Aninthu - Hariharan, Sadhna Sargam - Poovellam Kettu Paar

Another soulfully sung number from Hariharan and Sadhna with wonderful picturization. Nice lyrics too.

11) Sevvaanam Selai Katti - Jassie Gift - Mozhi

Jassie Gift has this gift of being able to carry songs with that slight bit of a dance quality to them very easily. A very powerful baritone voice that has been tinged with generous doses of treble for a different listening experience.

12) Kaatrin Mozhi - Balram - Mozhi

An enchanting song which immediately makes one envision the gentle caress of the blowing wind. Powerful, moving music excellently brought out by the singer.

Sujatha has sung the same song in another version however I like the male version better.

13) Kannal Pesum Pennae - SPB - Mozhi

There is not a lot left to write about SPB. Lets just say that only he could have made this song so rollicking with so much apparent effortlessness. A joyride of a listen - this song.

I wonder if the songs I have provided above have been too uniform in their style. For good measure I would recommend peppy numbers from the movie Sukran with music directed by the talented young Vijay Antony. In particular "Saathikadi" and "Suppose" are highly enjoyable.

There are a great many other good songs, I am sure. These are just the ones that came off the top of my head - today. I think the lists can get more focused if you mention any particular style of songs you tend to enjoy more. Or even particular singers or music directors.

Hi vortex,

I am delighted that you have mentioned many songs that i like too.
Particularly poo vaasam purappadum, vizhigalin aruginil vaanam and mozhi songs.

Yeah SPB! what is left to say about this bloke? I hope i can meet him someday and take a minute of his time, to say a simple thank you for all the pleasure he has given us all these years. I am pained at a lot of singers now struggling with their prounciations. SPB is a telugu, but can any one find fault with his tamil rendition? For that matter great singes like TMS,PBS,PS,SJ were not tamils. But they never butchered the words.

I really want to start a thread on him asking guys to list their favorite SPB songs and their nostalgia too. But not all guys here are followers of tamil songs. If it is ok i will start it.

cheers,
sri

You like my selection or you don't? :)

As I said, I listen to Radio city and other FM stations, and there are some songs that just get to you. I have got into the habit of noting these songs so that I could make a collection.

BTW you selection is also very good. Thanks for that. I shall add the ones I don't have into my 'to be recorded' list.

Cheers

I like quite a few of your selections - as always. What never fails to surprise me is the range of songs you like and can enjoy. That is a rare quality.

The only thing is that I am biased against remixes - barring a very special few. And I certainly dont think that music today has touched the heights of what it was in the 70s and 80s.

In those days our music was more Indian than not. Today it is vice versa.

Thanks Sri! I think SPB to an extent has crossed the language barrier. So, a discussion about SPB need not be limited to just South Indians. So, please feel free to start a thread if you feel like it.

But, why should we limit ourselves to discussions that will be of interest to all forum members or all Indians? We should initiate what we want to discuss and let the interested parties come to the table (thread ).

Honestly Tamil Music industry has been doing great without any slump :) earlier it was KV mahadevan and then MS viswanathan. Then came Ilayaraja era and it can be termed as a melodious period[Even his latest Nandala is a tr8 to the years]. This is the time when i started listening to movies. Then came ARR with his path breaking Roja and then there is no stopping. Added to that harris jayaraj[latest varanam Aayiram was too good], vidyasagar, Yuvan and of late GV Prakash are all contributing to the Music.

Of late i listened to some songs from telugu especially Mickey mayer[ Happy Days & Kotha Bangaru Lokam]. Both has melodious music with some gr8 recording.

Thanks,
Prakash.

Two personal favourites of mine that i want to add to the long list.

1. Vaan Nila Nila alla, SPB, Pattinathil Bootham.

This was his first song i think. He probably puts his entire aspiration as an emotion into this song.

2. Poduvaga En Manasu Thangam, probably Malaysia Vasudevan, Murattukkalai.

Unbelievable energy in this song with simple instruments and recording. The rustic feel that you get as you listen to it still gives me goosepimples.

I am trying to locate the song list that i had from my Nomad player. I could stir up some memories and post a favourite list from there.

Some of the favourites straight off the top of my head
Pani vizhum
Ilaiya nila
Kamban emandhan
uravugal thodarkathai(Aval appadithan)

Wanna listen to such songs in crystal clear recording without distortion.

Hi,

i am happy SPB is finding a place on the forum:)

BTW srr, vaan nila alla alla is not from Pattinathil Bootham. It is from Pattinapravesam. A film by KB.

I visited New India Music yesterday and got two CD's by SPB. I will write about the songs of the Cd a little later.

@venkat. The guys at New India Music are asking Rs125 for 15 songs per CD,
not 120 for 10 songs. So for 500 songs it should cost you Rs 4250. See to it that he does not rip you off.

cheers,
sri

Hai srikarkav,

Thanks for the info. What types of albums does he have. Does he have english also. For Tamil films how does he source from LPs or CDs. Because Ilaiyaraja CDs are the worst mastered .( 1980 s hits). The Oriental Cds are not upto mark. many a times I have purchased them and disappointed. Better to record them from the LPs( issued by ECHO). Even the Saregama CDs are not as good as the LPs issued by HMV earlier. Universal sounds quite good compared to the other 2. Polydor is now Universal Music.

Folks, there are many movies such as Allay Payuthe, Varnam Ayiram, Roja, Punnagi Manna, (Kandhaswamy? :), that have songs most of which are good. So it would do to mention just the names of the movies.

I am looking for individual songs from films that are exceptionally good. Other songs from the same movie may not be good. I would say if a movie has 4 or 5 songs that are good, go for the audio CD of the movie.

Cheers
