Tata Sky + HD --Quality sucks

totally agree!!! I have dish HD and am thinking of switching but if Tata Sky is also not that great, what are the other options??? anyone has any experience with ICC HD service? They are giving the HD box free and even though they might not have that many HD channels now, they do support 5.1 audio. any ideas guys???

All DTH operators are a compromise currently. Dish HD and TS+HD seems to be a better compromise. Personally, Dish HD gives less compromise as they have max capacity and do not do pathetic thing like DRC to audio and video which TS do. So you are better off watching Discovery and Nat Geo HD in Stereo on Dish HD (you could convert to pseudo 5.1 anyway through your AVR) than TS HD setup which completely spoil these channels through extra video compression and DRC on Audio despite it being 5.1. They were doing this to 2 HD channels before, now they are doing to Star Cricket HD as well. All SD channels are also affected.

Add to it MONO sound on 9 of the PRIME SD channels like HBO, PIX, Zee TV, T&L, Animal Planet, etc! Can you imagine? Despite them giving mono audio on these channels they have the guts to tell me its stereo! This much pathetic such DTH operators can be. If they are REALLY unaware of such issues, think of the kind of folks managing their setup! They had screwed Video as well on Star Cricket HD and took about a week to fix a SINGLE setting they messed with which should have had done immediately out of sheer embarrassment. But as usual, they shamelessly SLEPT on this issue for about a week. So, while I am keeping it primarily for Star HD channels and cheapest cost for HD channels, there is no way I could agree on few folks who vouch on TS for AV quality!

What a hell is this. you guys don't know anything and just talk useless and for you guys we suffers as I suffered.

Myself and my friend had decided to bring Tatasky+ once it launched in our area but before purchasing i thought to google it first which was my 1st mistake. And then i came across to this post 2nd big mistake. After reading this forum i thought Tatasky+ is not that good in compare to Dish TV and i am well convinced by you guys so i decided to switch my plan to dish Tru HD. I also tried to convince my friend to swith her plan to Dish TruHD but she didnt convinced and bought TATA Sky+ HD previous week. I went to her home and i find the picture very pleasing but i had in my mind that the dishTRU Hd is better so I feel happy to think that i will be having more clarity than this so on saturday i talked to a dealer of Dish TV and get it installed the Dish TruHD the same day which cost me 2990 + 500(for installation) with 2 months subscription. and after the installation finished i was really excited to watch the HD contents and when the technicians left i switched over the channel in excitation but it did not last longer to my surprise the clarity of the picture of SD channels was so bad to my previous Big TV connection i felt like i am robbed. I have plain stb of reliance Big TV and the picture quality of the SD channel in Big TV are way too good than the Dish Tru HD. And not to mention the quality of the Tata Sky HD+ is way too good to compare with DISH TRU HD as i went over to my friend house the next day to check her Tata Sky+ picture Quality and i again amused to see her quality of picture of both SD and HD channels and felt really bad to see them enjoying and i paid to see more deprecating quality. I called to customer care and described the situation so they first told every thing is alright but when i force they sent two engineers to my home on Tuesday but after watching the signal they said every thing is alright and starts to annoy me. I send them back as they are no use and i felt that they are lack of any technical knowledge. i decided after two months i will just throw it out.

I just want to ask any readers not to fall in this blunder. It should have come to my mind as in all the post if they are saying that the Tata's have old technology or bad technology according to them but then also the problem can be rectified in the future but in the Case of Dish Tv the problem lies itself in the crappy set top box which is very slow and non responsive (looks too cheap too) so what may be the matter may be present or future you have to deal with that crap forever. Think yourself and decide.

All the things of Dish TV sucks

very very poor set top box and very bad response ( you will feel like you will throw the remote)
Poor Picture quality of both HD and SD channels (i compared with Tata Sky and SD channels of Big Tv)
OK OK service quality as they always tried to talk bogus in your call and try to convince every thing is right.

Brother, the opinions expressed here are of individuals and do not reflect the view of this forum.
You expressed your views about dish, others may have felt the same about ts. No one forced you to get dish. I am disappointed with the quality of sd channels on tshd. But I did not blame anyone for that.

I too agree. Everyone has their own point of views. You can ask others about their views regarding one service but it is upto you to decide which one is better. If you go through the forum, you will see people have recommended TSHD+ as it is VFM though SD channel quality is not that great but HD channels are awesome on it.

Many members make fun of Dish fake HD campaign but there are members who prefer Dish TV. Dish TV has the biggest subscriber base in India (way above the next competitor). I have seen it on my friends CRT TV and it seemed good to me. Not sure how it will look on LCD though.

I always prefer Airtel and as soon as Airtel launched Star HD Channels, I bought Airtel HD DVR and pretty happy with it. If someone takes Airtel connection based on my preference, I can not guarantee he will surely like Airtel. Somethings may be acceptable to me and not to others.

I have both Tata Sky HD+ and Airtel HD DVR. I was out of the country for last 2 months, when I got back there was a noticeable loss of quality on TATA Sky. Even my parents noticed it.

I don't know how others compare. I have recently added two HD tvs to my house - which a couple of months earlier I never thought I would do. I have just one TS HD+ connection and since it seems that soon I should move to HD boxes, I am thinking about migrating from TS to some other provider, and also based on this thread.
Few observations:
1. I find TS HD+ video quality quite good on HD channels.
2. I have seen Dish TV at many stores, doing demo. I don't know if they have set it really bad, but each time I thought my Tata Sky DS box is much better and thankfully I have not gone for anything else. Those were the days when I had only CRT. Today, I think of dumping the 29" CRT as each room has wall mounted HD TV (hence saving lot of precious real estate).

I do not use a HD/ HDMI receiver so audio wise, there may be better options. Video wise, I will believe only when I get to see.
Another problem with the TS HD+ box - it doesn't send 4:3 pictures in 16:9 with side bars. So every time I switch channels from HD to SD I have to adjust TV settings so avoid seems too fat ppl. Maybe I am missing something.

^^^that is not the case with my TV, you need to adjust your settings according both in the STB and the TV.

The sky guys by default put them on stretch. lol.

One of my friend has also became victim of this. After reading some posts by few individuals he assumed that Dish True HD is best as they sounded very technical person to him. But after visiting my house recently and watching HD and SD channels on Tata Sky+ HD box, he was regreting for his descision. I'm using Tata sky for last 4yrs and very happy with this. I admit the mono sound is a problem sply when I watch music channels But when I look at others I find tata sky absoultely far better.

Are you sure this is not due to TV? It could be that LCD having TS+ is better. I am not saying TS is bad. It is good. But I have seen Dish also has pretty good SD picture and sound.

People should not blindly follow someone. Everyone had their own preference. So it is better if the buyer verify the quality beforehand at some frd's place or relative or Electronics store.

I've not seen his TV yet but he got Samsung 40 inch LCD.

I agree this is the only way people should do. They should decide only after experience that not by just reading posts and comments.

Well, not to kickstart a debate on who is better as there is a separate poll thread for that, but my own experience across certain DTH providers:

1. Never faced an issue with Tata Sky - I have owned all 3 generation set top boxes - Tata Sky (non HD), Tata Sky+, Tata Sky +HD. The term issue here refers to technical glitches which were not resolved under 4-6 hours. Found their Customer support to be the best in terms of trying to address an issue, not that all their support personnel are highly trained but they do try to resolve the issue at the earliest. PQ and SQ are decent, number of HD channels is low as compared to other vendors.
2. Airtel - Not at all transparent to their customers. First hand experience of they taking in the money first and then denying installation of a product as certain install aspects are not possible - in this case it was 2 wires running to recorder hd box. Agreed, the customer needs to arrange for the same, but if things are not feasible, there should be an option to get a refund for the difference between product ordered and delivered. Support staff highly unfriendly. At least in the installation I have, regular signal drops occur.
3. Dish Tru HD - only concern is the service support received.

From reliability perspective - find TS to be faring better. But before opting for any new connection - please, please do compare all the DTH service providers by seeing and listening at actual install sites. You can visit your friends and relatives to see the content and then decide. As for cable based STB, had one in Chennai - must say that it never suffered from the signal outage during heavy rain or outcast, but then signal drops due to power outage, cable damage definitely used to happen.

^ to the above 2

this is an old thread (feb-aug 2011)... perception will definitely be different now

please do not bump up old threads
