No, that's not normal. I don't have any such problem. About the volume control, I don't use the STB remote either so not sure.

Correct! Have tried three cables (A Sony, an MX and the stock cable with tatasky box) on three different HD sources - PS3, Xtreamer and Tata Sky STB. No difference at all in any of them.

Theoretically yes, practically no. The reason being the difference in the quality of the scaler. Most low/mid priced TVs do not have very good scalers and thus you are generally better off feeding them signals at their native resolution. On the other hand, set-top boxes such as the ones being used by most DTH companies in India probably have scalers that are worse than the TVs also. If you have a mid/high end TV and a low end DVD player, then it is quite likely that the TV would do a better job of upscaling than the DVD player. But if you have a mid/high end DVD player then it will do a much better job of up-scaling, For example the Oppo players. both DVD and BD, have excellent upscaling that no TV can match. Bottom line, there is no correct answer to your question, except that you must try it both ways and see what gives you a better result in your player/tv setup.

one thing for general info of others all sd channels are broadcast in 576i, hd channels are broadcast in 1080i.

edit: i checked using normal av output the disturbance in audio still comes at intervals, it was not there on normal tatasky which was installed before.

yes, the same sparking sound is also coming from my hd box too...
 
I was wondering if anyone knows of a good place to buy a coaxial cable for audio in Mumbai? Croma doesn't have it. I saw some on Ebay but they seem quite expensive. How much should this cable cost?

what i meant is the sparking sound is coming while watching sd channels through my tv speaker...

it is not present in all sd channels..and it comes suddenly..so its difficult to tell when that will happen. i believe u are facing the same...

right now i do not have any clue what to do with it...might wait for other members for their experiences and then might take the matter to the tatasky cc. but frankly i dont hope much what tatasky cc will do to prevent this.
 
Couple of other things about the STB.
1) The number of channels that can be set as favroite is very limited in number
2) I see the HD set top box is very less responsive to channel surfing when compared to the SD counterpart or SCV boxes
3) The channel surfing process also seems to be easier (the navigation) and simpler in SD or SCV

I am not able to control the volume in my stb when coax audio output is connected to my home theatre and this happens only when viewing HD channels. For SD channels it is working fine since only stereo output is coming through coax out.

Any one experiencing this issue?

The set-top box by default only controls the channels that don't have 'Dolby Digital' audio. Dolby Digital is an encoded signal and thus, the only way to control it's volume would be to first decode the DD signal and then re-encode the audio to DD for output via the coaxial output.

PS: The SunDirect HD (Samsung) set-top box has the provision to turn on the control for the digital output, but that then means losing the DD5.1 audio on the digital output.
 
Tata Sky HD now available in Hyderabad thru' Tatasky customer care itself. I ordered it thru the phone and the next day, they installed it at my home. Even the SD channels looks far better than the normal settop box.
 
How do you save the settings when you change the video resolution from HD to SD under Organization--> System Settings --> Installation Settings --> TV Settings (don't ask why I need to go back to SD)

I tried a lot of times but the settings are never saved. It returns to HD.
