Tower speakers for Denon 1911

Auditions for the day - 2:

Testing done on the following songs/movies:
1)Tubular Bells - Far above the clouds
2)Infected mushroom - vicious delicious
3)Mettalica - Nothing Else matters , One(starcraft)
4)Miami Beach
5)World hold on
6)Pink Floyd - Coming Back to life

Movies:
Transformers 2

1)Paradigm Monitor 7
a) First impression....these are kindda slim :P
b) Very clear highs...again a bit rough though...the sales person said these were very new and had not been broken in yet. They would sound better/softer after 100 hrs of playing..... Experts pls comment on this....is it true they will sound softer ?

c)Mid were also very clear and detailed, but there was a bit of booming during metallica
d)Bass was nice and tight but not very deep as the speaker goes down only to 40hz

Overall loved the detail in the sound and the tightness of the bass.
However my ears felt a little fatigued after 30 mins of listening to them(the harshness...i guess). hope the sales guy is right though and they do sound softer after a while.
Rating: Music: 8/10, Movies :9/10

2) Wharfedale Diamond 10.6

1)First impression......good/elegant looking speakers
2)Second impression....They sounded very warm and soft and nice and cuddly after the paradigm :P
3)The highs were good and soft though not the most detailed I had heard
4)The Mids were also good, little less detailed and definitely not loud enough
5)Thumping bass for a budget tower is what i felt ! it felt so much softer and deeper than the paradigm...but it lacked the tightness.
Overall, very warm sound, clear highs, clear but not loud enough mids, nice bass with a thump....I would say these speakers are more melodious sounding but lag behind in the highs and mids department.
Rating: Music : 8/10 , movies 7/10

What is the source on which you tested these speakers which has a definite say on their performance . Diamond 6 has a tight bass if the lows are controlled around 120 Hertz .

Regards

tested on denon 1910....the predecessor to the denon 1911.
so for me its almost like testing with my avr.........
Also, these are just my humble opinions and what i felt

I think 1910 is having graphic equaliser . Adjust the volume of frequency levels above 2000Hz to 20000Hz from 0 db to higher as the frequency increases and less than 2000hz inversely. cut the low frequency feed back i.e cross over at 100 to 120Hz .This will definitely improve the Mid and high frequency SQ of 9.6 towers. Also the quality of the CD/DVD will also effect the SQ of the speakers . If you are using entry level DVD Player around 6k sony out performs the rest in SQ.

Regards

yes i am aware that how a speaker sounds can change through the settings, I kept all the settings including the volume same for both auditions.
Infact the paradigms were louder than the warfs at the same volume.

the player was a blue ray player from Dune, its cost was 35k , so am sure it gave decent sq.

That damn dune is an average video player. But the audio part? BLEH! YUCK!

When you use a HDMI and choose raw digital out, the audio capabilities of the media player is immaterial. And for 1080P, the player has to do nothing other than faithfully send the data to the TV.

It would be incorrect to expect too much from media players in terms of video and audio quality as that is not their main intention. You should rely on the AVR to do all the decoding and processing.

Cheers

Hi Floyd
Pls check the Wharf 10.6 out after bi wiring and bi amping with 1911. I use a 9.6 with my 1910, just did the bi amping and biwiring yesterday and there was a significant improvement in mids, bass extension (stereo) and detail...just finished a 7 hr music session!
Cheers

Guys,

I have a question about bi wiring the new speakers.
I will be buying the Paradigm monitor 7 and playing with Denon 1911 , relevant Specs are as follows:
Speakers:
Suitable Amplifier power : 15 - 180 Watts
Maximum Input Power : 130 Watts
Impedance : 8 Ohms

AVR specs :
Power : 90W per channel RMS

Cable:
Audioquest x2

Now my questions are:
a) Will the speakers sound better if I bi wire them?
b) Bi-wiring will increase the input power to 180 Watts, which is ok, but the max input can only be 130W, so will the speakers blow up if by mistake I increase the volume high?
c) Incase I do not bi wire the speakers, can I turn up the volume of the AVR all the way without damaging the speakers and distorting the sound? How high can I go?

Thanks for your suggestion mate, but I have decided on the paradigm as I loved the detail and I will be adding a sub later so base will be taken care of.

Do not bother much about biwiring. Not with 'our' (1910) receiver. I've read a lot about it, and at this price point and this level of speakers, it's more of an urban legend than anything else.
About the volume part, you will not need to turn it up all the way. If you do so with any amp, you risk sending a clipping signal to the speakers and hence damaging the speakers or even the amp itself.

Thanks, so what is the "safe" level of volume I can go up to?

Guys,

Now my questions are:
a) Will the speakers sound better if I bi wire them?

In my understanding, the improvement due to bi-amping is more significant than bi-wiring...this is particularly so for speakers whose crossovers have been designed for bi-amping..search for bi-amping in this forum ..there is a discussion specifically on bi amping and bi wiring...

By bi-amping, each speaker is being driven by dedicated amps as opposed to a single amp driving all speaker loads, hence strain on the amps is reduced. If u are planning to use the 1911 in a 5.1 rig then you can assign the spare amps (2 channels) to the fronts and bi amp the speaker.

Suggest you demo the speakers bi ampd with the 1911...you will see improvement in performance.

In my case, the denon 1910 (90wx7 @8ohms) was not driving the 9.6 (200w @6ohms) well enough for stereo and i had to use a sub for good bass...on bi amping, there was an improvement in detail and bass output from the speaker at comparable amp volume levels used pre bi amping.

Cheers!

Thanks for your input mate :)

I had read the discussion on this topic but as usual there were opposing theories and the specific answers I wanted were not mentioned.
