Tymphany custom OEM surplus drivers group buy

Hi Siva- I connected the BSC and listened few tracks. I observed mid bass and overall bass improved even if speakers are placed far from the wall so it works. Definitely worth it. However, I felt little spark missing in the high frequency. Also, need to increase the volume as compared to no BSC.

That's correct - BSC actually attenuates the mids and highs (to get the same effect as boosting the lows). So you will need to turn up the volume by ~ +6 dB to get the same mids and highs as earlier, which has the effect of boosting the lows by +6 dB.

Can you please suggest how I should connect the capacitor. Is it the same way I connected the inductor and resistor in the red (+ wire) of speaker. Also is there any need to take care of + and - in these (resistor, inductor & capacitor). Sorry again for the dumb questions.

All three are non-polar, i.e. have no polarity and can be connected either way around in this application. The cap may be connected in parallel with the L and R, as you did earlier with the L and R.

Just got a call from home that my parcel has reached :) (4 nos). Thanks Siva for the prompt shipping. Yet to check the drivers. Will do once I reach home. Will start a seperate thread with T/S specs and also an FR graph.

Cheers,
Venki

Hello Linuxguru,

I am interested in these drivers.
Are they still available?
I've PM'ed you. Please check.

Hi Guys,

Could check only TS of one drive so far due to lack of dedicated time. Here are the figures. Also attaching the ZMA for those who want to design x-overs. I will post the T/s specs of the rest of the drivers later so that we can average it out.

Hi All..

tried to simulate a sealed enclosure for these enclosures using parameters posted by venki7744,

Please let me know of any corrections that need to be done, This is my first time for simulation :D , so this might be totally wrong ....

Yellow trace is for 2 drivers sealed

Red trace is for 1 driver sealedsealed sim.jpg

Thanks
Harsha

Just a quick note that BSC doesn't seem to be required for a dual-driver Tabaq or similar quarter-wave TL, using either 2x Tymphany 12-ohm drivers in parallel, or 2x Sven 4-ohm drivers in series. I just auditioned it carefully without BSC using a MiniRef amplifier, which is the most neutral amplifier I have on hand. I did A-B comparisons with a pair of commercial JBL LX2001 2-way ported speakers and several other ported/reflex speakers. The dual-driver Tabaq sounds the most natural without BSC.

YMMV for dual-driver *sealed* enclosures, but if you have sufficient cabinet volume you can probably manage fine without BSC. It's easy enough to audition and verify.

Couple of weeks back I made the cabinets for the dual version of these drivers similar to what Linuxguru made it :)

I am yet to install the drivers and hear the same but completed the cabinets yesterday and fully satisfied with the outcome. I now feel that I have improved my DIY skills with this build as I made the front baffle edges curved with planar and sand paper to make them look exactly as what Linuxguru's carpenter did. Got the vinyl wrapping sheet from bijin courtesy "diyaudiocart.com" and very happy with the outcome. Here are the pictures

The rounded edges and vinyl finish are very professional looking, and the driver cutouts are also very clean and circular. Please also give an update after installing the drivers and auditioning it.

Thanks yes I got the panels cut from my carpenter but the entire build I did it myself including sanding and pasting the vinyls. The driver cutouts I did using the round shaped drill bits which I had to almost the exact diameter of the drivers 78mm. The rounding I tried it for the first time and I hope it has come out neatly and the black vinyl is gelling with my TV as I am going to use it as L/R with my Yamaha 571 receiver and moving the energy satellites to 6/7th channels to make it 7.1 channel.

A close friend and fm was kind enough to lend me his pair which I have connected to TV and also music setup.
It uses single drivers each.

For TV the clarity is very good and transparent. Sound is very clean and clear. Bass is just adequate and its presence is felt.
If used for TV then these are very good and give nice clean sound for any decent sized living room.

In sterio too sound is clean and transparent. Still drivers yet to cross 50 hr running so will improve.

The volume needed to be turned higher to drive them to listenable volumes (as compared to my other speakers) which is as expected due to efficiency + TL design.

Overall good value!
Thanks to all who have contributed to this effort!
Regards.

Here are the finished speakers with the drivers installed. Pretty happy with the outcome and they really sound superb especially in HT for movies. Even good with music playback w.r.t vocals. These will make a very good L/C/R speakers for the HT and VFM.

Apart from the vocals are they are not up to expectations? What is lacking?

May be I am biased with my Frugal Horns, hence my views. I feel the TABAQs with these drivers lacks the full flow of the music. I somehow do not hear the fullness of the entire range of music that I get to hear from my FHs. The base is less and they lack the punch. At its price point of build I feel its a VFM option for casual local FM radio stations and especially 80s and before music. For slow and old generation music they sound pretty good.

If the bass is low, there's something wrong. In a TL, there should be no shortage of bass! And if there's less bass, by themselves, they would be unsuited for HT too.

As I said I am comparing them with my FHs which give very nice bass and pretty good with all range of music. Presently I am using these TABAQ speakers with my Yamaha 571 receiver and pretty happy with them so far as they have replaced my Energy RC-Micro satellite speakers for L/R and anyway I use a Jamo sub for lows.

Speakers looks nice.I can see you taking picture ;).
Are those B&W speakers in the background?

Thanks spiro, no I just have my Frugal Horns for pure music and using these new speakers along with Energy RC-Micro for HT. Not sure which background you are referring to. It could be some decorative items hanging at the back which is reflecting in the TV ;)
