Just bought a 2nd-hand, Used Topping D10s.

the device keeps losing the USB connection to the laptop and the laptop then reverts to it's internal speakers output.

Beech beech main hotha hai...this doesn't happen with my apple DAC dongle for example.

How to fix it?

Thanks!

Check the usb cable. This could be the most likely problem.
Check the usb port. Using a torch see if the terminal inside are bent. Can you open the dac. It is not difficult. The USB B port is very sturdy. But it is possible that the terminals at the soldered point on the board has come off, especially if the first owner had the habit of frequently removing the cable. If you open the dac, you should be able to see that.
Are you using Windows? It could be a driver problem too.

Stupid question, have you tried a different usb cable?
havent

ubuntu is the operating system

in the sound settings, the output device keeps changing from internal speakers to digital Topping D10s, and back again when this flip flop happens, the USB is NOT - DERECOGNIZED. i.e it still appears in the drop down menu as DIGITAL out.

which is mysterious -- so what is making this flip flop happen?

This is a good dac. You can open it up and do some opamp rolling.
See this article on how to open it

Then it is not a driver problem. Can you do the following. Login to your ubuntu and launch the terminal program.
On the shell prompt, execute the following command

journalctl -fl

Now the above command will show you all the system error as it happens. Press the ENTER key twice so that you know any new line that comes.

Start playing music.
When the output device changes to speaker, there surely will be one or two lines that will suddenly appear. Please cut paste those lines and post it here.

EDIT:
Once you are through with debugging, Pressing control-C will come out of the journalctl program.

Another point

Switching of the output is not done by the OS. It is done by the Music Player you are using or the client (in your case it is the gnome sound setting client). Which Music player are you using for playing the audio.

You can install strawberry and select a fixed output device and play music through strawberry and see if the music suddenly stops
add-apt-repository ppa:jonaski/strawberry
sudo apt update
sudo apt install strawberry

Thanks sir..will try tomorrow and report back
Once you are through with this, I will ask you to install mpd and cantata on your ubuntu. mpd gives the lowest latency music playback, but configuration is a bit advanced. mpd will be able to fully exploit the good dac you have. To do the configuration you will have to run one or two commands which I will give later.
All the best.

THE ABOVE TWO LOG DUMPS ARE WHEN THE TOPPING WAS CONNECTED VIA USB TO THE UBUNTU LAPTOP.

There is some connection and disconnection that happens automatically and quite randomly between the Topping DAC and the Ubuntu laptop.

WHEN I TOOK OUT THE USB : THE LOG

Another point

Switching of the output is not done by the OS. It is done by the Music Player you are using or the client (in your case it is the gnome sound setting client). Which Music player are you using for playing the audio.

You can install strawberry and select a fixed output device and play music through strawberry and see if the music suddenly stops

Another thing is that you are using pulseaudio. Pulseaudio is like the dreaded window's mixer. It is not dealing properly with POLLNVAL. The alsa driver is using poll system call and it is failing with POLLNVAL, indicating the file descriptor got closed. Is the DAC getting sufficient power?

From the man page of poll(2)
$ man poll

POLLHUP
Hang up (only returned in revents; ignored in events). Note that when reading from a channel such as a pipe or a stream socket, this
event merely indicates that the peer closed its end of the channel. Subsequent reads from the channel will return 0 (end of file) only
after all outstanding data in the channel has been consumed.

POLLNVAL
Invalid request: fd not open (only returned in revents; ignored in events).

Nice command line work Sir! this is where I find myself all at sea in Ubuntu.

So, I also think that its not getting enough power, so I connected it to my other thinkpad T530 with a YELLOW USB powered USB connector.
It was disconnecting there as well.

Your OS has not been updated for a long time it seems. I will wait for the output of the file /etc/os-release and let you know the next course of action.
