Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player - a HTPC replacement??

have those new ADM speakers joined the system? Or are you talking about the audioengine speakers?

With the AVI ADM9.1 babies. Still doing analog out though from the Asus soundcard. Need to get some cables to check out with digital out and see which performs better the Asus or the AVI ADM9.1. Have an old Creative soundcard too lying around that will aid in testing.

the essence STX and the D2X cost the same
hence it is possible as moser said there may hardly be any difference in sound

so naturally if its between the d2X and STX one would slect the STX

my question is about the DX ( not D2X )
according to a website the DX and STX use the same chip UV100 then too the STX costs double that of the DX
intriguing
of course the DX does not have RCA outs
i think only the line out doubles up as a SPDIF out

Coming to think of it this makes no use because SPDIF out would mean digital out and if you take digital out you are back to square one - YOU need a DAC

if you want to use the DAC of the DX then you have only one choice use the 3.5mm speaker out jack and split that RCA signals using the splitter wire

Moser:
If I have to choose DX or D2X because of cost constraints then how will I connect these cards to the NAD pre C160- Consdering that these cards don't have RCA terminals?

Also, you have not answered my question regarding connecting PCI-Express card on motherboard menioned above. Bear in mind that PCI-Ex X 16 slot is occupied by 8600GT. Kindly look at the motherboard pic and let me know if can install Sound cards on this motherboard.

Thanks

First off I think your motherboard supports digital out for audio and if so does the NAD have digital inputs?

Coming to PCI-Express both the DX and D2X support PCI-Express x1 so your motherboard is fine to accommodate them both.

Magma:
If the D2X and STX costs same then there is only DX left in the cost bracket. Now, if I were to use a splitter than I have see if the audio quality is degraded or not. This is vital. Are there other equivalent brands in this cost bracket which have RCA and Toslink?

Moser: NAD C160 does not accept digital-in (Wish it would, then I wont need a DAC!!!!!!!!!!:yahoo:)

"First off I think your motherboard supports digital out for audio and if so does the NAD have digital inputs?- Moser"

I want the digital-out so that I can send out Dolby 5.1 / DTS stream to my AVR. I shall use this for HT purposes. For 2 channel I need RCA to connect to NAD pre. Maybe I was not clear before.

Hmmm. Really need other Asus soundcard owners to step in and confirm if they have analog RCA x 2 output. The STX really kills every other card with the analog outputs. With the digital out it just does not make sense since even a Rs. 1000 soundcard will have digital output and both will not have any difference or much of a difference. The Asus will probably do a better job considering its better build quality but when I compared it to other cards from Creative and Auzentech there was not much perceivable difference with digital output. The Asus STX however absolutely killed the rest with its analog output even with decent quality PC speakers.

@Sumit - If you need 2 channel RCA output then only the Asus STX does that AFAIK. However, let's wait on other Asus soundcard owners to confirm this. If possible I will try to check out other Asus souncards, but its a real headache in my city. Getting the STX itself involved quite a bit of running around since the local PC guys never even heard of it. All they came up with was Creative...

@Moser: Yes the STX does RCA and it does very well. Been reading some reviews of STX / DX; and cards from other manufacturers just bite dust. I don't have first-hand experience but reviews speak highly of these cards.

Do you know if I would be sacrificing quality if I use a splitter- 3.5 to CA?
In the meanwhile, I shall plan a visit to Nehru Place soon. Lets see what I can dig out from there.
Thanks for your help.

Cannot really say about the splitter. The couple of times I tried using a stereo 3.5 mm splitter the FX was missing, but the splitters themselves were low quality ones sourced from a PC hardware store. Maybe good quality splitters should do better, but I've not tried any so cannot say for sure.

I tested my laptop with a bandrige 3.5 to RCA ( phone ot RCA) cable. The SQ was good. But, I could not do any comparable study. I can't really say if the SQ is depleting or anything.

only someone having both cables and both connection options can answer this one!

moserw you are in a good position to do this study provided you can source a decent splitter
the MX digital gold plated splitter costs 250rs. should be decent enough

Just a quick one gusy although this is not the right place....

Where can a get a connector to connect 2 subs to my onkyo 606. It has 1 sub preout. I do not want to use a common male to female RCA splitters (R/L).

Suprateep:

I own a connector that you are talking about. It is a very good quality connector. It is made by 'Monster', so can trust the quality. Costed me around Rs. 500.00 only. It is a splitter type and is connected to the back of the AVR. You can buy it from
Shemaroo, Bombay. C/o Mr. rakesh Phodkar 098964 86160, 2380 8095.
I presume this the best way to connect two subs.

Cheers.

@all - Bhai log, aren't we going really offtopic here talking about HTPC and its components. Lets keep the discussion to WD TV please :) !!

@mBR - where art thou ? Any new R &D 's on WD TV ?

Hi All WD TV owners :) Please answer this question :

Does WD TV plays .avi movies ( the ones we download from torrent ( ya ya I know it's illegal and all :D )) with .srt ? I mean will it play the movie with subtitles displayed,if we have the movie and .srt in the same folder with the same name ( like it plays in PC ) ?

eg :

Lost.avi
Lost.srt / Lost.sub

Please please help

yes it does most of the time (8-9/10). Sometimes there might not be standard encoding used wherein the file will not play/not play smoothly.

Hi,

Actually the concern I have is because I read in couple of forums that "External subtitles (srt, ass, ssa) are out of sync most of the time"

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1100499

Has anyone faced such problem?

I have lots of .avi movies ( dowloaded from torrent ) with external .srt/.sub subtitle with the same.

Please comment

Thanks

It does happen now and then but the latest firmware is supposed to have fixed.

Previously, I used to use Jubler (i think nto sure of the name) and adjust the subtitle based on the delay. Hardly a minute job.

Illusion: I got engaged and have been busy with that :) thats why not active :)

Thanks and congratulations :clapping:

Actually read in may forums that the issue still persists.
Also I know it's very easy to actually add/delay from the srt file but then again you have the problem of the video/sub out of sync when you play it through PC.

Thanks
