Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player - a HTPC replacement??

Reju & Frnd08,

Thank you both for the vital information.

The price which mtnl and bsnl are offering is dirt cheap compared to what reliance is offering, I just checked with them they said for the unlimited plan during night for 1mbps is a huge 1,799/- rupees.

I hope some other members can throw some light how much are they paying for high speed downloads.

Thanks.

Vinay.

So it seems that you do not have MTNL line at your place. Right?
It's never too late to apply for a landline connection. Once you have the connection, apply for the triband (internet broadband).

Venkatcr,

I appreciate your detailed writing.

Indeed there are several of them who will vouch for the downloading, as that is the way to go ahead.

I too will like to lay my hand on the bond movies. The well branded new releases dvds from retail store at 99 are quite rare but yes they are available at the upper price.

It is interesting to note the details on blue ray to dvd. Congratulations on such a good source.

The 720p I think is not over 6 gb, the cost for unlimited download will not be much, but the speed could be a issue.

It is nice to know that you are making a collection of movies, with me it is the other way round, once I know that I will not like to watch a movie again, then I just want to remove it from my collection.

I will look forward to your comments on the mkv, after you have seen the movie.

Vinay.

most of us however face a dilemma. if u want to watch movies in a quick span of time, 700 mb rips are the way to go, but if u wanna get some quality, hi defs (mkv files) are obviously the only option. say for example, you wanna watch a movie u dont have in ur collection, what do u do? wait for a week so that the 4gb mkv gets downloaded (720p prints usually have very few seeds) or get hold of axxo and stuff so that you quench ur thirst for the time being (it takes only a few hours to download axxo stuff!)?
i am not pitting axxo against premium quality rippers like esir, septic etc. but i just want to know ur opinion in a situation where u simply want to watch a good movie not in ur collection.

For English movies I will wait for HD instead of jumping on the TS or CAM or DivX. Once you see the movie, then you lose fun watching on HD.

I have so many other HD movies in my collection to keep me occupied for next 2 years, one movie a day...So for me no hurry...:)

Hindi movies, yes I will download TS or P-DVD, but no CAM please!!

i use a bsnl 512 kbps unlimited connection at 1350 a month and i am able to download 1080p movies wthin two to two and a half days.

thats what i'm saying, for people having night unlimited that would mean around a week.

btw do u ever switch off ur pc? coz that would mean wastage of bandwidth allotted to u. :P
and do u face any probs coz ur pc runs for such long hours?

Oh. Now I follow. Earlier I though you meant about HD movie being available only a week later or so....cause DivX may get released earlier...

Hey for me with MTNL night unlimited (2 MBPS) plan I could download up to 5.5GB in one night. Now it's full unlimited @ 735MB/ hour. So about 17GB in 24 hours.

yea the calculation's all good! :) but the thing is, hd rips hardly have seeds numbering as much as say an axxo rip. so naturally, u cant expect the hd movie to get downloaded at 2mbps speeds within 24 hours can u? a standard esir or septic 720p movie takes around a week to get downloaded! and if ur searching for rare rips (like Titanic 720p rip, dont know why Titanic is rare! only one hd rip of titanic is available :O ) it could take u many weeks! now thats exhausting! :P

only thing one can do is download 10-15 rips at a time. so that you can reach speeds of upto 2mbps

Calculations are my actual download speeds, because I use RS.
Torrents are so boring...
Otherwise 2 MBPS should be 900MB/hour or 21 GB in 24 hours.

RS is cool but aint exactly safe. hope u have heard of the metallica fiasco.

also am not a premium user. do u pay RS? or are u an uploader as well?

No, not heard that, nor about any safety issues for that matter?

I am premium user for last 2 years.

Latest price for WD TV is Rs. 6900 including B&W.
1TB WD EXT HDD Rs. 5350 (My book essential)

i have a question for people using WDTV. how do u store your movies? i mean of course not in ur HDD (that space is limited), where else then? maybe dvds, etc. but then, everytime u want to play a movie, you need to switch on ur PC, copy the movie from your DVD to your USB device and then play it on WDTV, isnt that a little bit cumbersome?

Well i burn all my stuff to Sony DVD's. Blank sony dvd cost around Rs 12 when i buy a set of 100 disks.

On one dvd i am able to burn 6 avi movies of 700 mb.
Or one entire season of 12 episodes which are 350 mb each.

For anything urgent to watch i copy it on a thumb drive watch the same and then back it up on the dvd once done.

Usually i will copy whatever i want to watch on a thumb drive and HDD drive and connect and watch the content, once i am done i just burn it on a dvd and store the same.

Otherwise you can go for 1 or 1.5 TB hdd and store content on the same which once watched u can either back up or get another additional drive when the existing one gets full

no offence but wouldnt this whole process of copying and removing be a whole lot easier once we had divx 7 hardware?

Very surprising you are content with stereo content in this day and age of 5.1/7.1 content. It took me the better part of 6 months to replace all my stereo rips with 5.1 rips.

Well my amp decodes and i get 5.1 channel sound, so dunno about the 2.1 sound, always heard 5.1 sound, the receiver is outputting Dolby Pro Logic / Dolby Pro Logic II - IIx .

Are you talking about the "Lost/Prison Brerak" Season episodes here. :ohyeah:. Cause me a big big fan too. Just finished Lost Season 4 yesterday !

Prison Break all seasons finished in 1 month record time !

Nah take it from me , the 5.1 thing does not work always . 90%of the times it does not send the required channel to the rear speakers. This fact was even reported by one of my Frnds who had sent 40k on a Yammy Reciever recently . So if his yammy cant , then i really cant blame the poor little sony reciever that I have.

Its more like all these receiver decodes the sound to 3.1 than 5.1 , i.e, Center, Front Left , Front Right and Subwoofer.

A seperate post cause I have a simple but very IMPORTANT question.

Ok, now when I turn off my WD TV do I need to eject the HDD every time before I press the power button ? I am asking this because every time I power off the WD TV my 3.5" externall HDD light remains on . I have to manually go and power off the switch for the HDD light to go off. Is that bad for the HDD in the long run ?

A beautiful, well-constructed speaker with class-leading soundstage, imaging and bass that is fast, deep, and precise.
