Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player - a HTPC replacement??

I was watching 2010 1080p yesterday on my WD TV Gen 1. It was a 15.8 GB rip with DTS 5.1 @1.5 mbps sound . I was disappointed to see WD TV stutter at all the high motion scenes . I had read that WD TV was very much capable of handling such high motion scenes with high bitrates , so what gives ? The F/W was 1.2.07 . I then upgraded to the latest 1.3.01 and the stuttering was still there. I also tried copying the movie from my External powered Maxtor 1 TB HD to the portable WD 320 gb and as expected the stuttering became worse . So this got me wondering , can it be a USB limitation ? Or is it a Hard Disk Limitation ? My Hard Disk has a 7200 rpm hdd inside , what could be faster that that ? All in all is this a WD TV limitation ? Has anybody tried playing such high bitrate rips ?

Hi,

I've played the same file on a WDTV Live and my PlayOn. It plays perfectly without any problem. And even with my previous WD TV Gen 1 i've played the G.I.Joe which was around 25GB and did not have any problem playing it. May be the file itself is like that, how does it play on your PC??.

cheers.

Friends,

I have a few questions to ask on WDTV. I confess, I haven't been through through the 105 pages of post here...so pls excuse :)

I plan to use WDTV primarily to play music (flacs). My first question...

1. Can I connect the digital out of WDTV to DACMagic?
2. What happens to the digital output when I play video files? Can I have a setting wherein the digital output is always 2-channel?
3. Where in Mumbai can I buy WDTV with proper bill, etc? And how much does it cost?
4. Since I will be using it primarily for music, how does it compare with xtreamer? Since I am not intending to use the DAC part, I guess I will be looking to compare the music management capabilities of the two.
5. Which ext. HDD will be ideal? from a stability point of view? 2.5" or 3.5"?

thanks friends!

1.Yes
2.Dig out is same as what source file has.Music files mostly in stereo,DVD/vob with 5.1out
3.Price starts from 6.5 to7.5k ,primeabgb or other-
WD TV WDAVP00BP HD Media Player

4.Music with RCA out is OK & not as good as you connect to DAC.
5.WD passport 2.5 ext.

whr r u from mumbai? i stay at navi mumbai ,we can meet if tim and schedule permits where you can see demo of wdtv

thx spirovious!

I presume the DACMagic will not be damaged if it gets a 5.1 digital input.

So while watching video, I shd take the analogue out through the RCA and feed it to the stereo amp. Or connect the WDTV to the LCD TV through HDMI and feed the audio output of LCD to the amp. Am I correct?

DAC magic will automatically transfer 5.1 input to digout.
DAC magic has that provision. It will not decode, but passthrough from its coax out.

Hi,

This is not a problem with the player, this is to do with the way we use the remote. Everybody has got the tendency to press the Enter button to play any file, instead press the Play button. The former option plays only one file, but the latter option plays the sequence.

This is a general problem, but you've stated that only in some DVD video files...., if that's the case, the above will not help.

cheers.

I have been following the WD media player in this forum and would like a clarification. I have a Pioneer 610 DVD player with USB input. Can I use a USB stick and upscale it to 1080i? Or would a WD media player give a better output?

Hi,
I am planning to buy the WD TV Live from the US and get it to India. I have a few of questions.
1) Will the standard adapter work in India. I mean is it in the 110-240v Range.
2) How is the service of the same in India.
3) What kind of HDMI Cable do I need to buy for the same. Can i buy that in India or should i get that too from the US?

Thanks.....
