Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player - a HTPC replacement??

Madbullram

I have used MKVToolnix for re-muxing. I extracted AAC from MP4 file using another tool called OJOSoft converter and converted to AC3.

I used MKVToolnix to mux MP4 video (AVC1) and AC3 and generated a MKV file. So far so good. When i played the file, my AVR recognized the audio as Doby Digital and reproduced the sound. However, there seem to be a sound lag (no synch between Video and Audio). There seem to be no issue when i play with VLC on my comp, but WDTV seem to be having the lag issue.

I tried setting the "Delay (in ms)" and "Stretch by" fields in MKVToolNix (MKV Merge), but no luck. Any pointers to what could be the issue and what settings should i use for Lag and Stretch fields.

Thanks
Zorro

Woah , just saw this post ! Please refer to my above post for jhamela free experience. The only downside is that the container changes from mp4 to mkv but that really is not a problem . I have reencoded 6-7 movies till date , no lag whatsoever.

was searching for this kind of thread for a
long time.

i've got a few questions of my own for
WDHDTV gurus on this forum

1.how to connect HDTV player with my
LCD TV(sammy 32" model B480 link )
and edifier c3 speakers with RCA input to achieve
the best results?

2.which format(flac, aac etc.) of songs sound best
when played with WDHDTV player?

P.S. i've got gold plated HDMI cable for video,it's
audio i'm more perplexed about.

SPOT ON ILLUSION :) thanks

Sirji even though this is directed towards MBR , let me help out here .

Download and install mkvtoolnix.
After installation click on mkvmerge.
Add the file , then simply choose a diff location and click on start muxing.
This will save the file as mkv with no changes in audio video stream.
Next use Popcorn Hour Audio converter.
open the app.
Navigate to the AAC tab .
Make sure that the Convert AAC 5.1 tracks is ticked.
Choose a location for the file.
Click on Run.

Presto your old mp4 aac file has been rencoded to mkv with ac3 . :yahoo:

Hope this helps.

Also the entire navigation is purely put of memory. In case the steps dont match then do let me know and I will tell you the exact navigation from there.

Cheers !

1. Connect the HDMI out of WD TV to one of the HDMI inputs in Sammy TV. Connect the Audio L & R out of WDTV to the C3's Audio IN L & R. Use a good quality cable for this (u can browse MX cables)

2. uncompressed flac and WAV are the best (for WD TV or any future player) but I really doubt if they are will be any noticable difference between these and high quality mp3 or aac rip in a C3 speaker system and WD TV combination. SO my suggestion is, if space aint a constraint do a flac so even when u upgrade in future you are all set

PS: For audio try these: MDR Electronics - MX Electronics - Home Theater Cables & Connectors - Computers & Laptop Accessories - Pro Audio / Studio Audio Cables & Connectors - Audio Video Components & Accessories - Fiber Optic Component & Accessories - Cable TV Component & Ac

Hope it helps :)

Gr8 . Now why dont u do something for me as I am too lazy to do it. When u convert mkv aac to ac3 using Popocrn Hour Audio Encoder , do it once using the highest bitrate ( 640 i think) and then do it again using the next lower once. Now playback both the files and see whether can you really make out a difference in both the sounds ?

Most welcome :) Looking forward to you input on how WD TV sounds with C3, have heard some good things about the C3s when connected to a comp so eager to know how they are when connected to WD TV

Tried the said method with stock cable provided with WDHDTV.i usually watch tv series through the player.my observation is sound is great when watching series like greys anatomy, which usually have lotsa background music and songs.but when i watch series like lost, with plain dialogues, the speakers of lcd sound much better.i guess i shouldn't have too much expectation with budget speakers like edifier c 3 :)

Have u tried tweaking the speakers by increasing the treble and reducing the base? Usally it helps when u r watching a dialogue intensive audio

Got my WD TV this weekend. Did some brief comparisons with
- Quantum of Solace DVD rip. Uncompressed VOB
- Hitman Blu-Ray rip. Approx 4GB m2ts file.

TV's:
32" B530 FHD viewed from 8 ft
Panasonic 42" PV8 HD Ready viewed from 10 ft

Both movies:
WD TV + Samsung = Looks lovely !!
WD TV + Panasonic = Looks lovely too !!

Also compared with the PS3

QoS
WD TV + Panasonic = Looks lovely !!
PS3 + Panasonic = Looks lovely !!

Hitman
WD TV + Panasonic = Looks lovely !!
PS3 + Panasonic = Looks a tad grainy. Also the audio went out of sync. Lip movements were following the words with a slight delay. Must be some file format issue resulting in the PS3 losing out.

Usability WDTV vs PS3
# I prefer the PS3 XMB. Navigation with the WDTV remote is a tad slower than the PS3. PS3 is a breeze. Also, PS3 displays more content at one go than the WDTV making it easier to browse. WDTV does not seem to utilize the screen real-estate available to the fullest.

# Screensaver of WDTV is more practical. During music playback. The lone small WD logo jumping around the screen saves energy as well as ensures no screen burn (plasma). PS3 has fancy 'screen savers' which also are always on the move and look great but surely use up more energy. And in case one forgets to switch off the song details display, the letters stay on the screen.

# The USB HDD switches off, when PS3 is in standby mode. In case of WDTV it stays on when the media player is switched off with. Not sure why.

# Initial data read times for both are similar. However, if the HDD is disconnected and then reconnected WDTV seems to be up and ready quicker than the PS3, which takes some amount of time to rescan all data.

# WDTV works fine with the Harmony Remote - although I miss a 'back' button in my 550. The back button can be accessed from the remote display screen. A tad cumbersome. PS3 needs a Bluetooth adaptor, which I don't have.

More if and when I discover anything else.
