I am getting a new HD DTH connection (normal HD Box NOT HD Recorder), probably tomorrow.
But I still can't decide between Airtel, Videocon and Tata Sky.
My requirements are low monthly cost, good PQ and good service..
Since I want to keep monthly costs down, I plan to take the basic compulsory package and supplement it with the HD package.
That way I figured I can get the the best PQ (full set of HD Channels) but a relatively low cost (since I am not subscribing to any other SD packs)...

BTW these channels are very important to me :

1.) ESPN HD
2.) Ten HD
3.) Star Cricket HD
4.) National Geographic HD
5.) Discovery HD
6.) History TV18 HD
7.) Star World HD

PS. Working well in the rain is also critical...

Thanks in advance for the help guys...

stay the hell away from Airtel .. for more details, read the numerous complaint threads here and everywhere else !!

Can you please give some details.
I have heard about the issue with ESPN HD and Star Cricket HD, where these channels were suddenly unavailable but the subscribers were charged for these channels in spite of them being unavailable.
And then when they were available again, they did not get the channels but were still charged for it...
That's what I hear at least.

But it'll be great if you guys could give some more details about Service & Maintenance, Picture Quality, Rain performance and any other niggling issues that they may have, cause I am quite confused...

If we only look at service, I feel Tata Sky is on top but they lack channel packages compared to competition. All depends on your requirement.

Sir I have TS HD+ and Videocon D2H, on hardware and service front TS is superior but on channel count D2h is good, D2h hardware (non DVR ) is pathetic and also you have to poke videocon d2h from below the chair for customer service, still advice you to invest lesser onVD2H, migrate to TS Once they migrate to new satellite.:)

First of all, no "Sir" please, we are all friends here... :)

Thanks, you have made it quite a bit clear to me, but when will Tata Sky migrate to the new satellite, cause now they do not have any bandwidth to add new channels, and they are still using MPEG 2. But apart from that I also hear that it's quite expensive compared to the others...
And what do you think of Airtel?

I am using Airtel HD box from last two months. PQ and AQ is really good and they have 17 HD channels as of now.

There are two problems with Airtel:
1) Regional customer care is a total waste. They don't know anyhting. But Airtel presence team is good and they are active on twitter.
2) Personally i don't like the airtel logo on the TV screen. It needs to be more transparent and smartly placed. But again something you can live with.

If you just by pq and sq, hardware and also recording quality go for airtel and i am using it since 2 months. i am satisfied.
As per my knowledge all DTH operator operates with a service franchise for their service except tata sky. so there goes the reason for poor service of all DTH operator except TATA and also the high pricing of TATA.
Hint: if can have a direct contact with a service franchisee, your problems of service can solved as i do irrespective of DTH
