Hi All,

This is the first time I will be buying a serious gaming console. Right now I have decided to buy PS3. But with too many variants available, I require FMs to help me in choosing the right one

Its usage will be strictly gaming. It will be connected to HT system and projector.

Today I checked few models of PS3

1) PS3 12GB - Rs.18200 (with bill and warranty)
2) PS3 320GB - Rs.15600 (without warranty) (bulky one)
3) PS3 500GB - Rs.22000 (with bill and warranty) (slim one)

What is the significant difference between these models?
How important is the in-built storage capacity for gaming?

If you are a hardcore gaming fan-- then I would suggest the 320GB or 500GB. If not then the 120GB should be more than sufficient

^^
I am not hardcore gamer.

Do these consoles have any other differences other than storage size?

Does lesser storage size limit me playing any games?

Also checked reliance and found the following price

PS3 320GB with move pack - Rs.19900
PS3 160GB without move pack - Rs.16000

I have the slim ps3, 120gb, more than enough for casual gaming.Move pack is very useful esp for kids, keeps them (and us!) on the move, so to speak.

Just visited Croma - Had a demo with PS3 and XBOX too.

XBOX 360 - Motion sensor was good. No need for one to hold something in hand while playing. But its just HD(as told by store guy) and also pricey.

PS3 - Good video and audio quality. Full HD and even ready for 3D games. Available for less than Rs.20000

As of now, I am inclined towards PS3 320GB for Rs.19900, though for few minutes I was tilted towards xbox 360. Also PS3 12GB is available for Rs.18600/- (not much price difference comparing to PS3 320GB) and as sound_and_music suggested, 320GB is generally told to be better choice.

Correct me if I am wrong in my selection.

why are you not considering xbox?

I considered xbox 360 too. I was in fact happy with its motion sensor. But then it was told by sales guy that it has some optimal distance and when player stand out of this optimal distance, it does not work well. Even during demo, at times it gave message like come forward and go back when moved away from the optimal distance.

The 12GB model has recently come out. Most likely, it is for those people who like to upgrade the PS3's hard drive to a 500GB or something else of their choice (You can change the hard drive without voiding the official Sony warranty).

If you're uncomfortable doing the procedure yourself, I would recommend the 320GB. You can use the hard drive to store movies and music for casual watching.

And the Slim is recommended over the old fat version, because the old one had heating issues.

Besides the hard drive capacity, there is no other difference between the current PS3 models. Earlier, there was PS2 backwards compatibility, but now that has been removed, there's no difference between the models.

With some more googling I understand

1) Kinect is more fun than PS3 Move
2) For serious games PS3 Move is more precise than Kinect

Is that right?

That's just going to be the announcement. It is highly doubtful that they will release the PS4 so soon. They might just announce the release date and features and maybe the price of the PS4.

To me the biggest advantage of ps3 is psn. It's not that great for online game (compared to 360's live) but atleast you don't need to pay a yearly fee just to play online. And if you do get the PSN Plus membership (@2950/year), you get a ton of free games every month both for your ps3 and vita. Here's the games currently free... And the ones you'll get for free in Feb.. PlayStation Plus: Your February content – PlayStation.Blog.Europe

Other than that, I prefer the 360. Lets admit that kinect and Move both are gimmicks. Move may be more precise but kinect is a lot more fun for kids. Personlally, I think 360's controller is a hell lot better than ps3 too. But all those free games ensure that 360 is only played by the kids and ps3 by me.

Also, I won't worry about the next gen ps4 and Xbox 720 for now. Even if they get announced next month, they won't be released until the end of the year and then there will be availability issues, much less number of games available (might not even have backwards compatibility if rumours are correct) and the over all higher cost of both the console and the games. Better to wait atleast a year or two before buying either of the next gen consoles.

Updating.

Finally got Xbox 360 4GB with Kinect, from one of the colleague. It was almost unused and got it for Rs.15000

As of now happy with the toy and enjoying

Congrats. If you have kids at home, don't let them know about kinect. Otherwise they'll always be in your room and won't ever leave! :p

A beautiful, well-constructed speaker with class-leading soundstage, imaging and bass that is fast, deep, and precise.
