I recently bought a subwoofer to use in a 2.1 system, while it has good performance my main problem is that the bass causes vibrations in my living room that is very distracting with music, for movies not so much.can you recommend any solution to remove these rattling noise.Subwoofer is placed near a open shelf whenever I push the dial past quarter the shelf begins vibrating causing noise. My question is there any material to fit on the shelf to prevent vibrations and what are the things I could do to decrease the rattling.

What is the 3D room size?

With a single sub you are bound to face issues. Like sash mentioned, placement of sub plays a factor. Try a sub crawl, this is probably your best bet without spending money.
Almost everything are suggestions that will work for some but not for everyone. Only measurements will tell. Without measurements, it is going to be really difficult to give reliable advise.

Also, Can you try by moving the shelf to a different room? Is it only the shelf resonating?
