An evening spent 'tweaking' Avidyarthy's ATL Speakers

ME would be induced to 'hear' your Thiel 1.6 after that, as well as the VA Beethoven Baby Grands in case they remain in Chandigarh by then (so, Chandigarh is the place for a short visit). Already have heard the fab Dalis at Aashish's place with a splendid amp.

Now, for the most important activity of all .... SAFE TRANSIT!

Iam sure, the people who started speaker upgrade along with you are already going for next upgrade..

Wonder how Mr. hari is going to handle more traffic if the speakers came out great.. ;)

I think he has already started the effort to streamline the manufacturing process...what say Hari?

Yes, i am already in conversation with some good local carpenters who can build the enclosures to the specifications and quality that i am looking for. The current vendor was good but too huge a guy to build only a pair of speakers. If it works as a group buy then it can be beneficial for all viz. carpenters, polishing guys, electronics vendors and of course me too. Its always a challenge to get only a single order build as it does not make any business sense for anyone. Its also expensive for the customer too buying only a single unit. If its say 5 to 10 pairs then the cost can also be balanced evenly. Hope more FMs gets impressed by the outcome and the sound stage and gear up for a group order.

Cheers,

I'm sure orders will pour in. If the sound is liked with others, not only will it be awesome to have an Indian made transmission line speaker but the speaker itself has the potential to look really classy and beautiful if it's finished right. The magic is the round curve on top.

Questions that be interesting would be
What about other drivers like fostex or seas excel + tweeter.
What about a possible bookshelf version of the speaker with a miniaturized TS inside
What kinds of finishes can be achieved.

I have managed to curve the veener without any joins by heating them at high temperature before bending them. I am awaiting the delivery from the carpenter tomorrow afternoon. Will immediately post the images once available.

I myself want to build a TL with the Fostex FE166en and have the design ready. The final SPL after the compensation network should be around 89dB/w/m and should be suitable for solid state amplifers. Am waiting for an Order for execution. The simulations have come out well. I checked some drivers of Seas excel with tweeter and found that they do not fit to my design philosophy completely. May be i need to explore more about their drivers to find a suitable combination. This is because i always design a first order cross-over and the driver parameters are very stringent for such designs. I found one of the Wavecor drivers to be suitable and matching my design philosophy. Not all Peerless drivers are suitable for the TL design + Cross-overs but have to do many simulation to narrow down.

A bookshelf version of the TL can be build and this depends upon the low frequency extension required and mainly depends upon the driver resonating frequency, the volume of the acoustic suspension Vas and the Qts (total Q of the driver) parameters. Not all drivers are suitable for a TL and typically the Qes (electrical Q) will have to be less than 0.3 and the Qts should also be less than 0.35 for a TL speaker. If the Vas is too high then a minature TL should not be possible. If there is an inquiry for making one, can look into it and debate before making one.

Any kind of finishes are possible - laminate paints (The one used in Wilson Audio speakers), lacquare, clear coat, melamine, veener etc. etc. But the cost varies based on the finishes selected with the laminate paint being the most costly. Also the cost of the veener can vary drastically based on the one selected.

There you go, you have all the answers ready already! now all you need is a microsite with photos and text and contact and you'll be all set! I really hope the business takes off! And I really look forward to hearing the speaker :D :D

There is a thiel CS1.6 vs Beethovan baby grand vs ATL comparison waiting to infold. These were a steal at 85k/140k in mainstream market. If the ATLs are anywhere close to even thiels for <50k, then I assume you would have to change your business to speaker making to cope up the demand. :ohyeah:

Would love to change my business to speaker making anytime. Its my passion. If i can change that to my profession then nothing like it. Also am equally passionate about my software profession. Will have to choose between the two if the demand really builds up. Am keeping my fingers crossed and hoping the ATLs fare upto or may be better than the CS1.6. But i am not sure if it can be below the 50K mark unless its a mass manufacture or so. Am also speaking with various vendors for their quotes.

Who's beethovan is that? And whos thiel?

Avid should arrange for an NCR meet in September! :D
There hasn't been one since 2010 I think.

Lets see now:

Speakers?

ATL - Avid
Thiel - ?
Beethovan - ?
Dali Ikon 6 - Aashish ?
Jamo concert 8 - Me
Lyrita Harmony one - ?
Something from Monitor audio from someone (A GS10 or something?) - ?
Quad - someone ?
Any other suggestions? my brains not working

Amps
Feel free to suggest!

Beethovan - For sale by Ajay. Avid was gonna check them both out.

I would love to attend this meet if Avid's ATL will be compared with all the above mentioned branded speakers. It will be a good learning experience for future designs for me. Hope Avid will arrange that soon after the initial listening tests.

carrying thiels would be a project. Maybe we can split into two meets one at avid's place and another at mine. I can bring lyrita pre and nad c375.
