Do I pick up an Onkyo 607 or a 707 at about 80% higher price or 807 at about double the price? Onkyo HT -r60/ or HT R 160/180. All these are within my budget, dont wont to go for overkill. My room is about 16 X 14 ft .

Are there any benefits to 7.1 or 7.2 and THX certification? Most of these come with RoomEQ software, how useful is this practically?

Thanks

George

I believe the THX certification is effective only if all the components in your whole chain are THX certified. So, it may not matter as much.
BTW, where are you getting the prices for the Denon range? In one of the B&M stores or online? One of my friends is in SFO this week and trying to get a Denon receiver for himself. So, any info you can pass on would be helpful. Thanks.

George achayo, If the Onkyo 607 has hd audio decoding, pre outs and height channels(should you ever need it), isn't it more than enough? I think you have good power amps with you already should ever the need arise for more juice.
Are you picking up a blu ray player too?

Raj

Denons on NY Craigs list-one seller, BTW is a Bantoo Sehgal!

Onkyo on Accessories for less-www.ac4l.com

iaudio: Achayan wants the benefit of advice-but looks like 607 is more than adequate. I agree, I have amps for music duty, so this wil not be hooked up for that application. No Blu Ray-I am bringing my SB Duet back with me, along with a 1.5TB HDD, and some other chillar stuff-books, music, Timberland and golf shoes, some valves, and of course the mandatory Duty Free stuff.

Chirag: I think the ones that I mentioned meet my needs at a price point below $500.

sorry to disappoint , wud suggest u look @ some other brands
you will very soon be disappointed with the models u are looking at , your room is big enough to accomadate better equipments

7.2 a gimmick ,there are other ways to connect multiple subs if needed. one solid sub shud be adequate
THX cetification --i dont believe in it ,cud be pricier, have heard better performance with Non THX ,
Room EQ -depends on listening preferences ,in my experience it doesnt benifit

does 607 has pre out? I doubt it. George, you may also look at latest harman kardon models. They have all 7 channel pre outs (but confirm pls b4 buying).

The 607 does not have pre-outs. Even the newer 608 does not have pre-outs. The 707 & 807 have pre-outs though.

Any specific reason you're recommending against Onkyo & Denon?

one more point on room EQ --it kind of makes the sound very unexciting sets up the system @ very low values .
i have done the room EQ but tweaked the values to my needs

personal experience is one
the onkyo may be very good to start off .Even i did like the brand a lot and have had onkyo amps from last 10years ( 575 , 787, 875) if someone ever passed bad remarks would feel hurt .
with time the first weakness i noticed was that it really sounded dull for stereo (what ever the given modes) this i noticed when i got an entry level yamaha 497 stereo amp ,the rcvrs were no where near

Though for HT was happy with the RCvrs ,though never satisfied with the power reserves although they claim big ,it was only used as a pre only for HT

after listening to seperates ,i would say that the onkyo i owned was no where near ,not even close to make a comparision

i do guess all the rcvrs from the likes of the common brands available to us irrespective of the company wud be more or less the same

no comments on denon --i dont own them

its just that i have moved away from rcvrs to separates and find the sound from all in one boxes, AVRs included do not excite at all , have put in a lot of money on them too ,so just an advice for people like me to invest in better gear and have a better Experience

george , since u have a couple of power amps already its wiser to pick up a processor and use your power amps for HT too --this will rock and outclass the models u mentioned

that must be doing time delays correction as well, besides the loudness. So even if you change the vol, u may still benefit from whatever is left from the room correction.

Subhash

My amps are 2 channel for audio and not high powered. In addition my HT speakers are not high sensitivity speakers so I will need some power( solid state) to drive them. I use valve amps for most of my listening. I agree with you about separates, but with somewhat limited AV duty, compared to audio, I am a bit reluctant to spend a lot for a pre/pro, and then get a 5 channel amp later.

Subhash and Santhosh

The Emotive LMC 1 is available used for $250 here. Does it make sense to go for one of them and add the multi channel amp later? For the time being I already have an old Onkyo AV receiver. Doing it in 2 stages, and with a low cost entry into the world of seperates wont break the bank

Please let me know what you guys recommend.
