The Emotiva LMC 1 is available used for $250 here. Does it make sense to go for one of them and add the multi channel amp later? For the time being I already have an old Onkyo AV receiver. Doing it in 2 stages, and with a low cost entry into the world of seperates wont break the bank

Please let me know what you guys recommend.

George, the LMC-1 is a good pre-processor except that it does not do HD Audio formats like DTS MA HD and Dolby TruHD. Having recently upgraded to HD audio, I can say there is a noticeable difference between compressed audio and lossless audio even for movies. But if you are ok with compressed audio for movies, 250$ seems like a great deal. I am assuming that the "Emotiva HSM-1 external HDMI switcher" is also included in the 250$ tag.

Since the LMC-1 does not have HDMI inputs/outputs, you will need the HSM-1 switch. As per link below, it was bundled free with the LMC-1 at some point:

went thro the LMC-1 Specs ,it seems to be the previous model , IMO
this definetly will be a better choice , it is supposed to come with an HDMI external switcher and the LMC-1 does have 8 channel external inputs too, so in case u add on a BD player u need to get one with an internal decoder and get going with HD audio

250$ is excellent price and u wudnt get any processors even a non HD one @ that price
u cud add on power amps in stages with this u have total control of the set up when it comes to the amps and power u need and it will definetly not strain wallet!!

definetly better to build up on the system in stages

i think the HD audio from the BDP can be routed via the analog inputs present within the LMC-1 and the External HDMI switcher can be used to connect to monitor via HDMI for full HD video ---solves the isuue of HD audio and video

You are absolutely right Subhash. Just that I considered George's current setup where he is using a Popcorn Hour which does not have multichannel analog out for audio. Also, the only BDPs that have multichannel analog outs are the Oppo BD83 and the Dune.

which separates would you recommend ?

Any processor (but currently the only full HD processor @ the most affordable price is the UMC-1) + any good power blocks shud do the trick ,it doesnt have to be a single 5/7 channel block ,multiple wud be a better option

depends on how serious you are abt your HT set up

processor + one 2 channel block for fronts (i wud prefer mono blocks)
+ preferably a power block which cud be run in mono mode for center
+ one or two ,2channel blocks for the sorrounds and back depending on 5/7.1

Guys, thanks for the timely advice.

I have ordered a 5 channel UcD 180 amp( in components) from diycable, and all I need to do is to assemble it in a locally sourced enclosure. The Emotiva unit (LMC -1) is with the HDMI switcher, and has just returned from being serviced by Emotiva, and came at a good price. It is possible that I may upgrade to a better unit at a future point, should I feel like it.

I am coming with a whole bag of goodies at the end of this trip-an SB Touch, a 1.5TB HDD, some valves, a softstart board for a valve amp,the AV stuff, books, a few CDs, some D-Free stuff, blah, blah...

Oh yes, for you foodies out there, yesterday being Father's day here in the Us, was treated to some outstanding Peruvian cuisine here:

Exotic flavours is putting it mildly..

The holiday continues with a trip to the Bay Area tomorrow.
Cheers.

congrats, am sure u have made the right choices

abt the amp , are u getting it in parts /components and fixing it up @ home ??

that wud be great fun

In parts-the Hypex modules can be assembled by diyers, without too much difficulty.

Essentially what you do is to get the amp modules, the toroidal, the power supply boards with adequate capacitors, using their cables and a soft start and then put it into an enclosure with all the hardware( connectors, pilot light, switches). To make assembly easy diycable supplies a custom mounting plate.

Depending on your appetite for power and how deep your pockets are, you can opt for the UcD 180 or 400 or 700 modules.

haha $250 lmc-1 ... thats steel ... you my mine have made a very good decision which will give you very good sq and vfm at the same time

Actually a little more than $250-this one had just come back from a factory servicing by Emotiva in Franklin TN, with firmware updates and a couple of boards replaced, so it was worth paying a more.
