Dish TV going the BIG way?

Well, they can't upscale regular SD channels and term it as HD just because they increase the resolution. I am sure this SCAM is very much provable... Just because they increase the resolution of a lower resolution content, they can not call it HD and NOT educate the customers accordingly.. They just can't say they are broadcasting in HD and hence calling those channels HD. Max they can call them is Upscaled...

I whole heartedly agree that what they are doing is unethical :-).

Talking of aspect ratio, they are not even optimizing the aspect ratio of a wide screen content and just blindly upscaling all the 4:3 content including the letter box...

There are 2 LIES they communicate in WRITING - End to End HD and 33% more Video content with 16:9 aspect ratio. Based on these 2 LIES only we can sue them heavily as they can not prove upscaled channels having end to end HD processing or 16:9 aspect ratio! Hope you would agree to this..

I agree with this as well! I am too sick of them to shout loud against them :(. I however have doubts whether there is anything that can be legally done on this front.

The best way is to boycott all such providers (not just DishTV). That should teach them a lesson. The problem is that there are not too many providing real HD content. Yes. Even the most reputed TataSky HD is not completely HD for all channels. While shopping for a plasma TV, I saw TataSky HD on the TVs. Whenever, I used to switch to other TS HD channels, I could observe the upscaling in Star Gold HD, Star World HD, etc. The salesman used to switch back to SET-MAX HD (showing IPL) immediately.

That's already happening. I have been a DishTV customer since 2005. While I had been unhappy about DishTV HD since I purchased it June last year, I still used to recommend them as the best choice amongst all HD operators till they started 30HD channels stunt. Now I don't. I am getting a TataSky HD now. DishTV lost 6 years of my loyalty to their fake HD claims :(.

And +1 to that. I have had DishTV since 2006. I do not have HD-TV at home (as yet). But I was thinking of a natural upgrade path - DishTV to DishTV-HD. Now, I am completely "cured". I won't touch DishTV and not just because of the fake HD channels. Other turn off's are:
  • Forced to take Platinum pack to avail HD service
  • For the (fake) HD channel, will not get the equivalent SD channel
  • Opt for HD service with HD STB and then there is no going back to SD service as SD service is not available on HD STB.
  • A little expensive: Rs. 450 for Premiere pack or Rs. 550 for Royale Pack
But one good thing about DishTV HD is that it has the "Movies Now" included. No idea whether this is a free preview as of now and whether it will be removed later.

Indeed these are all severe problems with DishTV's offerings. Movies Now isn't free. They had included it in their Royale pack initially. After realizing that no-one is buying the Royale pack, they moved it to Premiere pack :-).

Ooops! What I wanted to mean about Movies Now is that "it may be part of the pack now, all inclusive, but a time will come when they take it out of the pack and charge it as a-la-carte".

They have already done that with Ten Cricket.

They have stopped showing the SD channels for the so called claimed HD channels (eg. Times Now HD, CNN IBN HD) just because the users cannot differentiate between the quality of SD and HD channels. And they think we dont understand this?

Me too.. I was their subscriber since more than 6 years. Got Dish HD as while it was ALWAYS one of the most expensive HD service, I was happy to get Zee upscaled channels as they were watched mostly by my family. However my blood boils whenever I see what they did after Feb by this HORRIBLE SCAM of SO MANY FAKE HD channels and increasing the channel pricing WHILE INTRODUCING Audio Issues on these new channels (infact it occured in Nat Geo and Discovery HD as well for about a month). Instead of resolving those issues, they suggested to swap the HD box with SD connection and take any SD pack!

@prankey,
Magistrate: Can you substantiate the claim that you are providing 33% more video content?
Defendant: Your honour, our HD services are providing the content in 16:9 format which is 33% more than the conventional 4:3 format. Hence we stake this claim.
Magistrate: OK. Case dismissed. Next case please.[/I]

Probably over simplified and over stated. But you will get the gist.

How can they claim 16:9 aspect ratio for a regular 4:3 upscaled content? I would still insist they CAN NOT. Also, End to End HD is something they can not prove.. Only thing they can keep talking about is they broadcast in HD from their end..

@prankey,

You are agitated and rightly so. But Alas! You are not getting the gist and you are talking like a true videophile. It does not matter what you think.

No. I am not chiding you.

What matters is how is HD defined in lawful terms in India and not how the world standards describe it. This is something even I do not know. Perhaps it is worthwhile digging out how TRAI or any regulating body has described HD.

I have already got one, just in time to save the installation fee of Rs.500
Happy with the change so far.

Hahaha, forget about HFV, they are mostly keeping their eyes closed and sitting inside their HAND MADE WELLS just like TS in different issues (Dish TV with their Fraud HD campaign and TS with their DRC affected Audio and Fake 5.1 audio on some HD channels campaign).

A beautiful, well-constructed speaker with class-leading soundstage, imaging and bass that is fast, deep, and precise.
