I am planning for Optoma HD25 Projector with following key specs

Display Technology DLP
Native Resolution 1080p 1920 x 1080
Brightness (Bright Mode) 2000 ANSI Lumens
Contrast 20,000:1

Throw distance will be 11 to 13 ft, ceiling mount. I can control the sunlight into the room. There will be some incandescent light, however away from the screen.

Kindly advise whether I should go for Grey Screen or White. Suggestion on any specific model would help.

It depends on what you prefer.
Deep blacks or overall brightness.
Grey will give you super contrast at the cost of brightness and mild color aberration. With white, it is difficult to achieve pitch black unless the PJ is a high-end one. Safe is to go for white.

Thank you for the advise.

I love to see true black as far as possible. Do u think 20000:1 will give sufficient black level on white screen material? As far as brightness is concern, will 2000 Lumen be sufficient on grey screen?

20000:1 is an amazing contrast level for PJs so if you can control the light, white screen should do the trick. DLP PJs generally have better blacks. I think Spirovious meant screen with 1.0 gain and I too recommend the same. 2000 lumens is bright enough for a grey screen but for 3D, it may go down drastically... even lower than 700 lumens.

i am using a white grandview screen from last 3 years and very happy with it. Have HD 20 that gives awesome PQ and blacks are really good being a DLP. My preference would be a white screen rather than grey as white would reflect light more than what Grey would.

You can demo the same and take a call.

I am bit inclined towards Grey. As 2000 Lumen is very bright, the grey material will reflect little less light (as per my knowledge of Physics). I am struggling to get demo for Grey Screen here in Kolkata.

Would appreciate feedback on Elite Screen R106H1 (Fixed Frame, Grey Screen, 1.0 Gain).

Dushie.. What's the screen size of yours?

Screen is Grandview 150" Screen. My room where the screen has put up is dark blue in color and is dark with complete light control. PJ's are normally very bright. I use mine on the lower mode as my screen is +1 gain and the PQ is awesome.

Wow 150" is really huge....I am planning for a 120".but liberty grandview is little out of my budget. I was quoted 16k for the same... I am also planning to paint the walls of living room with some dark colour....

After reading so much content over internet on white Vs Grey this is the last line i read and stopped reading further :D

If your projector has enough lumen's to spare go with Grey, it will give you better blacks.

white should be the choice. also if you plan to watch during day times with a bright projector grey is suggested. i would also suggest go for white screen with 1.0 gain.

also Optoma 2000 lumens wont be actually 2000 to be true. optoma makes amazing pj's but their lumens is never what they state.

go for a white one with 1.1 gain and use pj on low brightness. this will result in extended lamp life as with 3d you will see 50-60% reduced light and you can use the pj on full power with high gain screen then.

Grey is best suit for DLP to gain the contrast level.
There are high contrast grey available with 1.1 or mor gain.

If possible, get a high contrast (grey) with gain 2.8 or more demo and then decide (If only few people will use your theater). Since some times you feel lack of brightness compared to your tv watching experience.
