Lyrita Audios amp solution of for power hungry and vintage speakers. A band new tube 845 Set integrated amp with a pure power of 15W.

Its good to say about new product from the house of Lyrita Audio. Yes the Delhi based Lyrita Audio and Mr. Viren Bakhshi the whole and soul of the brand has come up with its newest integrated tube amp, 845 Set single ended integrated tube amp. Six months before, I personally happened to visit there for a casual audition and then onwards became a fan of Viren sirs stuff especially Harmony One single driver speaker and the old 2A3 set integrated amp (3watt/channel).

Last month on a sunny Sunday Morning me and Mr. Venu Nair (from Gurgaon) landed up at Mr. Viren Bakhshis studio, thats Lyritas home. Viren sir as usual provided as the red carpet welcome as he always does!

After a quick talk and gupshap with a cup of hot tea and cookies we stared the audition. Now comimg to the new amp, I would say this amp unit has the same elegant look and finish as previous 2A3 set int. amp but the tubes are bigger and much brighter now and it looks beautiful when it glows in dark!! Wow, seems like a lamp. And we have connected Lyritas very own Harmony One Fostex single driver based floor stand speakers, and Lyrita ICs and speaker cable and as a source we have connected Marantz CD player + Lyritas own DUMA (not exactly sure about the name) DAC. Though we have also tried this with LPs, but lets start with CDp and we have listened couple of Jazz tracks, Pop and Vocal based tracks and Instruments too.

We first started with jazz album jazz tracks of Viren sirs choice. Before I start I would like to say that, I always believe that tube amps are much more efficient to handle the weakest signals present on the music, and music gets more life while getting reproduced by tube amps, and here also, there was no exception.

So we started with Jazz CDs. The tracks ware so lively on my ear and was with full of energy. The instruments present on the music ware much layered and full of rich texture. I could hear the single little details of strings all the spice present on the music with absolute accuracy. In one sentence I should say, I felt the music reproduction was so natural but with full of life!

Next we tried some vocal based tracks. The vocals ware on their purest form on my ear and there and I could really feel the emotion on the vocalist. And no need to say I could hear the singer berating sub text be editable? factor was present there. Though I felt that, the mids ware little forward, brighter and slightly overpowered overall but I enjoyed that very much on low volume. Even it was nowhere harsh in high volume as well. Overall it was excellent and full of emotion, live in texture and excellent sonic reproduction. CD audio never got so much life on my ear. I preferred low volume better than high.

Finally we attached Viren Sirs restored Garrard Turntable with Lyrita Tube Phono preamplifier with the existing setup with some jazz LPs. As the LP starts rotating, the first expression came from me was WOW! The music became so lively on my ear. I loved the presence of each instruments and perfect separations the flow of the music the soundstage, and the little beautiful LP kind of unprocessed sound. No need to say that, that LPs have lot more on life and energy on it. But the Garrard turntable unit worked as a wonder. Hats off to the restoration! You can check Virens post about the Garrard restoration. And the Vinyl with Tube amp + single driver speaker was a perfect combination. Wow, I am jealous about Viren Sirs LP collection.

While auditioning this new 845 Set amp with Harmony One speakers I couldnt find significant deference with the old 2A3 SET Amp, but I believe if you attached a different set of speakers (may be more power demanding), then this new amp may be able to fulfill the requirement of the speaker better. However my pick would be Harmony One single driver speaker and the old 2A3 SET Amp combination, as my personal taste. But as a conclusion note definitely would like to say if you have vintage speakers, or a modern power hungry speaker, you are intending to use that and still looking for the taste of sweet tube sound, and then this is the amp you should audition for. Happy listening to everyone!

I am providing the images that I have clicked on this session below.

Subhobh, nice to see that you and Venu finally got time to drop in at Viren ji's place to audition the Lyrita 845 SET. I do wish though that you guys had auditioned the amp with different speakers.
Did the 845+ Harmony one sound different than 2a3+ harmony one at higher volumes?

few weeks back, I also had chance to visit Lyrita studio and meet sublime personality Viren Bakshi. at that time, one unit with 845SET along with amity speaker was ready to be dispatched to someone. I had a chance to listen amity speakers at length with 845SET. feeling of 'WOW' was unstoppable.
after listening few tracks on this system, I asked viren sir to replace the setup with 2A3SET and harmony#1 speakers. Amity speakers definitely have boosted low freq response due to additonal bass driver. but if you are near-field listener and like to listen in low volume. nothing seems to be better than 2a3SET + single driver speaker harmony#1.
after coming back to bangalore, I am even more enjoying my system (2a3SET + harmony#1 speakers). nothing could be better than this for my listening taste (hindustani classical) and my listening habit(near-field/low volume).

Hi Subhobh,

Lovely pics thanks a lot for taking the trouble to upload so many! :)

I think your last pic is mislabelled. It does not seem to be the 2A3 amp. It seems to have one mullard rectifier shoulder ST tube, two ecc83 tube types (they look like the new type Viren has switched too, chinese one, not ecc83s and one 5687 type, seems to be the preamp/phono?

Do clarify.

Regards

Hi stevieboy,

Hi iaudio,

Yeah, me and Venu jee was planning this for a long time finally we made it.:eek:hyeah: We just auditioned with Harmony One, thats my favorite. Not a fan of Bass.

Now coming to your question, I couldnt find significant difference (though it may be). Infect I liked 2A3 Set better with Harmony, but I believe 845 Set was more powerful at high volume and little more capability to handle the sonic.

I can understand and absolutely agree.

Hi Sanjgupt,

Since you are in B'lore try to contact Steven and listen to the Lyrita SET 2A3 with the 45 triode tubes.

Rajiv

Call it my ill luck but I never had a chance to audition a Tube amplifier or for that matter a single driver speaker, in my life. The way Subodh has described the sound of the tube + Harmony1 speakers is quite tempting even to read.
I really wanted to audition Viren sir's tube Amp + single driver speaker combo. Is it possible in Pune?
What is the price one has pay to own these exquisite beauties (tube amp and Harmony1 speakers)?

Hi Rajiv,

He did come over listened to the 2A3 tubes since that was what Viren sells as stock. Switched in the 45 tubes he could not make out much of a difference cos listening session was quite short. Maybe now that he has the amp with him for some time planning to go over once, he's invited me over, then I'll take the 45 tubes for him to see. Would be easier to note differences after having lived with the amp in his own house.

regards

WOW, what a collection of CDs and Vinyls. Superb Viren Ji.

Congratulations Viren, on the new tube amp(845 SET). I hope it will now make things easier for partner this amp with most loudspeakers with reasonable demands.

Guys, any idea of the pricing ?

The collection is impressive not just for it's quantity but also for it's quality.
I could have spent hours browsing through the music, but I had already consumed too much time in the audition. The collection of mostly Jazz Music would probably be among the best in India.

I agree! Viren has some pretty incredible stuff. Especially on Vinyl. If i were a person of suspect values, I'd have drugged him and pinched a whole mother load!

Hello Subhobh,

I was away for some time, with limited access to the internet, and couldn't write earlier.

Thanks for the writeup. I'm glad you enjoyed the music. After all, it's all about listening to music, and to do that, you have to have a good selection of music as well. The collection was built up over years and years of listening, to live and recorded music.

All my SET designs are similar, with small variations. Of course, the tubes influence the circuit, and provide the subtle variations in sound quality. Overall, music reproduction is similar. It had better be, since the music is invariable, and the equipment should reproduce it as such. It is in the interactions of the amplifier and the speaker and the room, where differences are more obvious. And, in your expectations. That is why auditions with different combinations are essential.

Ajay124 - whenever you can make it to Delhi, we should have another session listening to western classical LPs. Some reserve power in the 845 SET amp, and the ability of the Amity speakers to handle wide dynamics, and the Garrard 301, really brings this music to life!

Regards,
Viren
