Hi experts,

I want to buy a 7.2 channel AV receiver and confused between 2 models - Marantz NR 1609 or Yamaha 585.

Local dealer is offering both these receivers at similar price. Please suggest which one to go for?

Note - My usage would be 50% Music and 50% Movies. Input source would be Smart TV (Netflix, Prime, Hotstar for Movies, and YouTube, Spotify, Bluetooth for Music.

I have Marantz NR1608 receiver and its very good receiver for music as well as movies. With powerful subwoofer this avr can be great performer for upto 150 sqft area. Marantz GUI is very simple and easy to use with more than enough different techanologicas incorporated. Marantz HEOS is one of the simple and smooth functioning app. Major advantage is front pre out which allows to add power amplifier in future for better stereo as well as movies experience. Have not audition Yamaha RX V585 so can't comment.

Pros of Yamaha
On the other hand, the Yamaha has their own DSP profiles to allow for great movies and music experience.
It is a bit more powerful than Marantz 1608
It doesn't run as warm as Marantz receivers
Wireless surround speaker configuration
Good build quality
Aesthetic look with appealing information display attracts most consumers

Cons
Additional cost to buy wireless surround speaker from Yamaha line like Musicast 20
Weak sub woofer pre-out signal output when compared with Onkyo or Marantz or Denon receivers
No pre out for front channels
Not many HDMI inputs as in Marantz

Any receivers at similar price range will have its own pro and cons and ultimately it is a trade-off between this or that. Irrespective of the one you choose, make sure to run the system with minimum 2 sub-woofers as that's where the real difference lies in experiencing what you are seeing than listening.

Which speakers are you gonna pair with the AVR? Consider some of the below points before purchase...dont rush!
  • Compare the specs and features....ask yourself if you will really use all the features of the AVR.
  • Marantz is more inclined towards music. Yamaha is 50 / 50 for both movies and music.
  • Both brands have dedicated Owner Threads on this website where you can read on first hand user experience. Yamaha (https://www.hifivision.com/threads/yamaha-avr-owners-thread.21982/) and Marantz (https://www.hifivision.com/threads/marantz-owner-thread.64820/)
  • There are ample YouTube videos or reviews all over the web...you can check those to get an idea on performance.
  • Audition if possible with the same content of mp3 / movie clips etc and same type of speakers in order to make a wise decision.
  • Ensure the Local seller is offering official warranty through gst bill and / or warranty card. You can always check with the customer / service support of these brands in advance via email to confirm if the seller is authorised.
  • Some consider the Marantz NR series to be underpowered. If tweaked and setup appropriately, it does pack a punch. Just to put things into perspective. A NR1606 marantz was being used by one of our FM based in Bengaluru with Dali Zensor 7 speakers. If the speakers have high sensitivity levels (88db or more) then you have nothing to worry about.
  • Irrespective of brand, all electronics get warm and produce heat. As per owners / operating manual, you need to ensure that the AVR / amp is kept in an appropriate area with ample space for cooling ...air to pass and heat to disperse from it. You can also additionally add a cooling fan to it.
