Hi Friends,
Want to share about my liking for ATC Speakers and how I recently became the owner of a pair of ATC SCM-11 speakers.

I first listened to an ATC SCM-40 at Abhi's house after the Bangalore Hi-Fi Meet in August last year and I have been smitten by the ATC brand and its typical sound ever since. Soon after that I got an opportunity to listen to an SCM-20 floorstander (passive) in Singapore in an all Naim setup, this was another great experience and made me wanna own them. Then I visited the ATC showroom in Singapore with Abhi and listened to quite a few models including the active SCM-100 Anniversary edition. There was something about the ATC "house" sound. All speakers across their range sounded very similar tonally, as you go up their range, one gets more scale since the size of the speaker also increases (the actives are a different beast though). I just loved the sound. The pace, the neutrality, less coloration, detailed, non-fatiguing and intimate presentation. Something that I could never get out of my head.

When I returned from Singapore, I put most of my stereo gear on sale with the intention of buying an active ATC SCM-50 and managing with a minmal system in the interim. I knew that the sale proceeds would still not get me the SCM-50 in the short term, but since the desire to own them was so strong, I decided to acquire one within the next 2 years directly from UK as it was very expensive in India (~10+ lakhs).

In the meanwhile, I built the Altec A7 and started enjoying it. But in the back of my mind, the desire to own the SCM-50 was still there, but it seemed it would take longer because completing the Altec A7 project (with amplification, different horns etc) would still require more resources. Then suddenly one day I see Raj had reduced the price on the ATC SCM-11s and I committed to buy them.

Most of you may have read on the two threads that there was a bit of drama but it also ended abruptly that I was buying it. In this thread, I also intend to bring the "ATC SCM-11 Saga" to a logical conclusion for I did not write much on the earlier two threads. But now, there is much that has to be shared - to clear the air.

I met Raj and took delivery of the ATCs last Friday. Yes, I flew down to Mumbai to collect the speakers myself. I would not have to go through this ordeal, but I did....more on that later. We met at the agreed place and Raj handed over the speaker. I had earlier expressed my concern over call and SMS to Raj that since the speakers had passed a few hands, he check the speakers and let me know about the condition and that I would book the flight if he confirms that all is well. He said he would not be able to test it but he would definitely inspect it cosmetically. He also offered that I could take the speaker, test it extensively and then pay only after the speaker functioned as expected. Sounded fair to me as Raj was unable to provide an audition at his place due to reasons that he shared over phone. So, when he handed over the speaker, I opened the box in front of Raj, inspected the speaker for any damage\cosmetic irregularities etc and since they looked to be in brand new condition, I took the speakers and tested it at my friend's place with his AVR. The speakers worked perfectly and after testing for an hour, I confirmed to Raj that the speakers were working perfectly. So far so good. But, I was really eager to listen to them in my system. So once I reached Bangalore, I connected the speaker to my system (mix of components listed in my signature)

And the result - Sonic Bliss!! These ATC monitors really live up to their name. I don't want to do a review yet as I know that I have to upgrade most of my gear now to bring the best out of the ATCs. So, without getting into finer details of how it sounds, for now, I'll say that I have tested the speakers extensively in my system (with my usual test CDs that include familiar music, male voices, female voices, jazz, wind and brass instruments etc) and the speakers sold by Raj are in 10/10 cosmetic and sonic condition. I never cared about the tiny holes in the grilles.

I must add that very rarely does one come across a gentleman like Raj. It was great dealing with him, he kept his word and I never had any issues communicating with him via PM, SMS or phone.

So why have I called it a Saga? Because there is more!!

I do not want to take names of these protagonists but those who have followed the two threads know whom we are talking about here. Let me call them Mr.MM and Mr.D. (FYI, Mr.D was mediating/negotiating the speaker deal with Raj on behalf of Mr.MM, who deals in audio equipment).

Soon after I expressed my interest to Raj, there were two attempts first by Mr.D and then again by Mr.MM to dissuade me from buying the speakers saying that the one woofer in the speakers was damaged. When I spoke to Raj the very first time, I got positive vibes over the whole deal but because Mr.D and Mr.MM had unnecessarily created a doubt in my mind, I had to worry and think so much before I finally decided to go for it.

I am glad it all ended well and that I just followed my gut feel and not listen to ^ mentioned FMs whom I had considered enthusiasts and my well-wishers. If not, I would not been able to live my dream of owning ATCs so soon. About the SCM-50s...some day!!

Congratulations. You seem to have got a great deal. Enjoy the ATC's and please post some pics and reviews.

Santhosh,
Thanks for the candor. It is pathetic to see the used higher end audio mkt. in India trying to be controlled by a few players at the expense of honest sellers. Hope our own HFV helps these type of sellers. BTW welcome to the ATC club! Great VFM speakers.
Cheers,
Sid

Congratulations Santhosh. I missed all of these threads. Anyway, I want to hear what is so special about ATC. I have no clue ;-)

It sounds interesting than ATC the below things.. You are mentioning "Denom & MM-who right ??? :p:p

Congrats on the ATCs and welcome to the ATC group.

I am not able to understand what Mr D and Mr MM are thinking about themselves. Is this the place to play politics? Arent they have some decency to deal with people? Its so clear that they were trying to cheat Raj, by God's grace he got the speakers back.
@All, we should avoid them like plague irrespective of what they have contributed to this forum.

Congrats, Santosh! I must say I'm jealous. I must be among the people who saw Raj's offer on his thread first and if I had the ready cash I'd have jumped for it before you did!

...I don't want to do a review yet as I know that I have to upgrade most of my gear now to bring the best out of the ATCs. ...

:eek:hyeah:

Thanks Santhosh for nice words and clearing all gossips on forum. I was really keen for buyer comments over speakers. Mr. X, Y .... should understand that by speaking sweet words and back biting stealthily will expose them to every body as one' s action speak much louder than words. I would suggest to be careful of all such members. Thanks again for clearing much awaited doubts

Congrats Boss.... Mostly next week I will be there for a listen

Regards,
Venu

Thanks Sid and cmsajith for your warm welcome to the ATC club :).

Congratulations Santhosh. I missed all of these threads. Anyway, I want to hear what is so special about ATC. I have no clue ;-)
Anil, you are welcome anytime to listen to the ATCs and the Altecs(for which you have been an inspiration). Let us plan something soon.

No worries Raj. I wanted to post earlier but I keep my long posts for the weekend as I browse mostly on my iPhone and use my computer only on weekend.

Congratulations. You seem to have got a great deal. Enjoy the ATC's and please post some pics and reviews.
Thanks Ajay. I will be writing a review sometime soon. In the meanwhile, some pics I took for creating an article on "How to pack a speaker for shipping".

Thanks Venu. Please drop by and please get your AP Pre and Power, would love to try it with the ATC.

Congrats, Santosh! I must say I'm jealous. I must be among the people who saw Raj's offer on his thread first and if I had the ready cash I'd have jumped for it before you did!

Thanks Hydra, I too did not have the cash ready. But managed somehow, sold my B&W DM3000 to reubensm and also my Adcom Pre and Power :). Now I have two pairs of speakers and one pre-power that I will have to manage until I save some dough to buy those :D.

Santhosh nothing wrong in revealing these forum member names. It'll be good for other honest sellers on this forum so that they avoid these unscrupulous people like plague.

I'm super happy that you got your ATCs that you were looking for :). Now time to invest in some serious amplification.

Congratulation santhosh for acquiring new ATC as well as a New friend Raj. I missed both threads in fact ignored as it was above my budgets

Thanks for sharing buying experience and hurdles you passed in the course.

Yes, very true I agree with that. Sounds like a real estate stunt - where people bad-mouth about a property by framing stories so that they can acquire and sell it for a better price.

Well, their ears should be bad and eyes are not so good, so they could have given the impressions or Santhosh's:lol:

Hearing the story from both ends should be an interesting one.. Denom:cool: Come on we expect you to jump in here:) By the by who is MM(Marma Manithan)? :p

Hi all,

Yes, pls continue the bashing, very interesting to read all the things being said here.

Santhosh, really sad to hear that you felt I played mischief & tried to dissuade you. I thought you were a friend of mine a good one at that. No problem if you feel the way you did. Its all my fault right????

I do not care about how all feel & about the negative picture being created here. No worries, coz I will still stand by my beliefs. If you think I'm wrong or a bad person so be it. Continue to knock me off/bad mouth me. I DO NOT CARE!

Santhosh, trying to call you but you ain't answering the phone, atleast answer (Bro)
Before writing about this saga, you could have atleast called me to say that what you had to say. No probs, I still wish you the best in life.

Congrats Santosh & enjoy new hifi stuff.

Well I have also completed a deal with Raj few months back.Raj couldn't give me a Demo, but offered me to carry the stuff(my home)& pay later if working perfectly.
I stay far from his house & so was not willing to carry it(In case if there was issue, again I need to drive to return, also my timings were not matching with Raj).So I took help of other FM & both agree to deal w/o paying money. The FM carried the heavy stuff for me & also tested for me(taking out his time). Finally I went to his house, collected stuff & finalize the deal by paying Raj.

Both members help me to complete the deal & showed faith in me.Thanks to Raj & the other FM none other than Denom.

Politics aka ... Mahabharat.

Something ... gone wrong somewhere ... thats why this subdued outcry from both quarters.

Best soluton would be to 'put it behind' and move on. Further discussions would unnecessarily make matters worse as neither now would back down. Come on, even I would not have backed down and accepted my fault in an open Forum, that too on a sensitive discussed topic. I ain't a saint!

Drop the subject ......... therez a lot to discuss and see in Hi-Fi, let alone hear. :)

Santhosh,

Congratulations once again for getting those ATCs home. Let the the bliss & sonic joy of ATCs overcloud your bitter experience to own them.

Cheers!!
Kevian
