now Dishtv goes HD

Well tata sky has the highest number of transponders, but the SD channels are transmitted in MPEG2 so they eat up more space compared to say airtel which uses mpeg4 so airtel make do with lesser transponders.
but because of HD tata sky as tied up with Ericsson's to upgrade to MPEG4 which has alteady done ,since HD channels from tata sky are in MPEG4 ,so eventually they will move to mpeg 4 for all channels,in that way i see Tata sky has having more potential to give more HD/SD channels in future then rival players like airtel.

I have both airtel and big tv,for SD channels big tv has the edge.

One more query, what do you people think about whether Tata Sky will charge again to change the STB if they change the compression algorithm? Just asking about opinion... Or is this new STB capable to decode MPEG4 based channels as well...

Well if they do change to mpeg4 then they would have to replace the old mpeg2 stb with the new mpeg4 based stb for free of cost and yes all the new stb that tata sky sell are mpeg4 ready including the hd stb ,sd stb & TS+.

Customer service is still pathetic. My old dishTV connection's balance isn't transfered to new account yet and they haven't taken my old STB so no credit for that as well. I have made more than 10 calls - no use so far. Let's see. I have about Rs. 2700 at stake :).

Customer service turns out to be terrible. They didn't know that I had asked for an upgrade (exchange). They didn't take my old STB and gave me new dish, LNB etc. Now I have to check with their CC. I got a new VC. Old VC's balance hasn't been transfered. The installation guys had no idea about that as well. Hopefully these problems will be solved.

Hmm this news is worrying me. I was about to purchase the Dish Tru HD STB this week. I need to buy only this STB because my TV supports ONLY NTSC format( bought from USA) . So , I must have a STB in which the scan rate ( 50Hz vs 60Hz ) can be configurable. NTSC TV takes 60Hz.
Currently I am using old Dish STB which has VGA. So, I hope that the picture quality of upscaled SD channels will anyway be better on Tru HD than viewing on old STB's VGA out.
Could anyone also confirm whether Tru HD STB has Component out ? ( not Composite RCA )
Also, could anyone know whether BIG TV or TataSky HD STB also have the configurable settings for frequency ( 60Hz or 50Hz ) ?

'Dish TruHD'
does indeed have 'component outputs' in addition to HDMI and composite outputs. Also, the 'Dish TruHD' set-top box allows for selecting between 50 Hz & 60Hz for each resolution.
I am sorry but someone else will have to answer regarding the TataSky & BIG HD set-top boxes. I would suggest you ask this in the TataSky HD thread.

You can only choose resolution on the TATA-SKY STB, It's not possible to choose the frequency. The TATA-SKY box upscales SD to 1080i.

heard from a friend that dish has started broadcasting ten sports in HD..can anyone confirm?
is it upscaled? or event based like espn hd..hope tata sky adds it

Nope! No REAL 'Ten Sports HD'.
is it upscaled? or event based like espn hd..
It is upscaled and showing on channel # 75 and incorrectly/falsely listed as 'Ten Sports HD'. The worst part is, that unlike 'Zee HD' & Zee Cinema HD', both upscaled channels are visibly much improved, compared to the 'Zee SD' & 'Zee Cinema SD', the so called 'Ten Sports HD' is barely any better than the 'Ten Sports SD' channel. The reason it is not event based 'REAL HD' is, just my theory, Ten Sports actual coverage of the match is not in HD. 'Ten Sports' is owned by Zee TV, thus even if the coverage is in HD, I don't think the idiots at Dish TruHD have the technical 'know how', to figure out all this on their own.
hope tata sky adds it
I assure you, you are not really missing anything. In any case as stated above, 'Ten SPorts' is owned by 'Zee/Dish TV' thus the reason why only they would be the only one's to do this.

@sanjay thanks for the info...dth regulatory should put to a end to this 'upscaled' HD stuff..
this is clearly misleading consumers who are shelling out same cash for full hd as well as upscaled stuff or dish should have differential pricing for their upscaled channels..

Interesting point. I wonder how the economics of such a move might work out. TS isn't storing any media anyway, they stream it from the channels, right? This would only benefit their bandwidth pipeline capacity, right?

This is absolute nonsense and a blatant lie. First of all Ten Sports and Dish TV are both owned by Zee, so what's the big deal about any agreements betweeen the two. This is nothing but a promotional press release with the objective of getting free publicity and that too with blatant lies. The fact is that DIsh TV is simply upscaling the regualr Ten Sports SD channel and trying to create an impression that it is a HD feed like the FIFA World Cup and Wimbeldon. Are there absolutely no laws in this country to protect the consumer fro msuch blatant lies?

Hopefully Tata Sky also joins in.
Why would you want TataSky or anyone else to also start lying and cheating theri customers as Dish TruHD is doing?

Well they sell HD stbs at loss to,so they should be making profit in channel subscription .
Yes it would only benefit their bandwidth.

After several phone calls and a 30kms drive to their franchise's office, I got both old balance transfer and Rs. 400 credit.

Check your facts before publicly slandering. Zee TV and Ten Sports are owned by two different entities. Zee TV as we all know and Ten Sports by the guy who started the CBFS series in Sharjah. I think you are making statements without actually experiencing the HD quality on cricket feeds. If you had watched them yourself and done a side by side comparison, you would not have made yourself look so irrelevant.

Do not spread slander like Dish TV is spreading likes or something. Only if you have correct knowledge, share it in simple words. I am using Dish and Tata for last three years and have found both to be equally good or bad.

If upscaling was such an easy thing, every tom's dik and harry would have done it. Let's hear some constructive criticism rather than blatant disinformation.

Maybe it is you who needs to check the facts.

Fact 1: Zee Telefilms Ltd owns a 'controlling' 50% stake in Ten Sports and have ever since November 2006. Zee Telefilms picks up 50% stake in Ten Sports

Fact 2: I have both 'Sun Direct HD' and 'Dish TrueHD' along with SD 'Dish TV' and 'Airtel IPTV'. In fact I have had 'Dish TV' long before it was even commercially launched and the likes of you had even heard of what DTH is. I was also one of the first to get 'Sun DirectHD' and also 'Dish TrueHD' installed when they launched.

Fact 3: Unlike the TRUE HD coverage of the IPL, FIFA World Cup and Wimbeldon, the so called Ten Sports HD coverage of the India - Sri Lanka series was only in upscaled SD and that too with 4:3 coverage shown with an incorrect aspect ratio of 16:9.

Fact 4: I compared the SD coverage and the so called HD coverage of Ten Sports side by side, numerous times and although there was a slight improvement over the otherwise totally crappy picture of SD channels, the benefit was mostly nullified by the squeezed picture due to the incorrect aspect ratio.

Fact 5: The so called 'Ten Sports HD' coverage of the India - Sri Lanka series, when compared to the IPL, FIFA World Cup & Wimbeldon coverage by Sony MAX, ESPN and Star Sports HD is liking comparing a VCD at it's best with an average Blu-ray.

Fact 6: Zee TV is 'lying' and at the very least 'misleading' consumers, specially ignorant consumers such as yourself, by terming and advertising upscaled channels as HD. No amount of upscaling can create resolution that does not exist and therefore even the best upscaling can never compete with true HD quality.

Fact 7: Upscaling itself is rather easy and simple in today's day and time, infact even cheap $40 DVD players do it for you. As a matter of fact every single flat panel HD TV sold has a built in scaler and by default upscales all SD signals to match the TVs native HD resolution. The benefits if any of these upscaled channels compared to the SD counterparts are not as much due to the upscaling, but rathe the benefit is from the better quality compression and higher bandwith allocation to the upscaled channels.

Fact 8: It is you who needs to experience some real/true HD and learn a few things about technology before you go slamming people publicly on forums.

Fact 9: Every Tom, Dick & Harry is upscaling. In fact it is 'Sun Direct HD' that started this nonsense and has upscaled 'Colors' and 'Sun TV'. 'Tata-Sky HD' has upscaled 'Star Plus' and now 'Star Sports' and even 'Dish TrueHD' has upscaled 'Zee TV' & 'Zee Cinema'.

PS: I presume you meant to write 'Dish TV is spreading lies' and not "Dish TV is spreading likes".

Controlling stake does not mean owning.

Well sanjay, you don't know me so don't presume that you would be such a great gun by having DTH when it wasn't publicly launched. This is a country of 1.2 billion and there are many who are better informed than you yet keep their thoughts mild. So watch your tone.

That only shows that you think every body other than you is a nincompoop and do not really understand the intricacies. I will leave it at that.

My comment above refers

If you think they are lying, don't buy their product, simple. Who asked you to buy the product. If you think touting "upscaled" as HD is such a simple thing, you need a reality check. Actually it is customers like you who with their half baked knowledge think they have cracked the code of everything and go onto become self professed gods of technology. Find earth.

Fact 8: It is you who needs to experience some real/true HD and learn a few things about technology before you go slamming people publicly on forums.

My comment above refers. You possible think you know everything and everyone else is el stupido. Wake up call for sanjay. World has moved, earth has spun, universe has expanded, hi-def is no more a preserved domain. Just to let you know, I know enough and plenty about hi-def tech to teach arrogant brats like you.

PS: I presume you meant to write 'Dish TV is spreading lies' and not "Dish TV is spreading likes".

Thanks for pointing out the typo.

Thanks for pointing out the typo.
Is that the sum total of your response to my reply to your post? By the way, my objective was not to point out the typo. I was simply confirming for I was not sure that is what you meant. It's just co-incidental and ironical that the statement "Dish TV is spreading lies" applies so aptly.

PS: In sharp contrast to what 'Dish True HD' dished out in the name and guise of 'TEN Sports HD', 'TataSky HD' is doing it right. Maybe you ought to check it out yourself to see what cricket in HD actually looks like. --> Star Cricket HD added in Tata Sky, Watch Champions League exclusively
