Paradigm Monitor 7 & 9 Auditioned & ........

Hi...I am looking at buying the Paradigm's and stuck between choosing the 9 or the 11. The 9 cost around 53K and the 11 will be around 74K. Looking at the specs do you guys feel it is worth it to go for the 11? I have only been able to audition the 11 here in Bangalore.

What amp/avr you have ?

Denom, your choice seems quite good. I personally have stopped listening to metal a few years back so didnt demo it with them :)

My impressions of the various speakers -
ML 4 - small speakers will shine in a small room. Excellent high and mids, would need a good sub to complement them. cost 33k.

ML12 - I hated them both looks and sound, The bass was very bloaty. However, the dealer assured me that they were fresh out of the box and would have improved significantly after burn-in.

Paradigm Monitor 7 - Pretty decent speakers, give a good sound stage but nothing special. cost 42k

Paradigm monitor 9 - Nice speakers, nice built, and excellent bass. When I played a fusion track from Indian Ocean, the percussion reproduction was excellent. Somehow, I assumed they may not be good for metal because of the tautness of the bass. Cost 56k.

I listened to the paradigms in 'The shop' in Mumbai as the dealer in Bangalore does not stock them for demos.

An interesting note in the demos, I listened to the 7 and 9 with a denon cd and denon integrated amp and later listened to them with an avr in a treated demo room and I couldnt bear the sound when I listened through the avr. Just made me think how many of my opinions on speaker auditions were affected by the demos.

sud... could you re phrase the above sentence..... thanks.

Hearing speakers in different demo rooms one comes across a range of equipments that is connected to them. Some have them hooked up in a stereo setup and some in a movie setup.

For the 7s and 9s, I first heard them in a stereo setup and I loved the sound.

I later heard the 7's using a onkyo avr and it seemed quite bad esp. after listening to them a few mins back in the stereo setup. Maybe if I had never heard them in a stereo setup I would have still liked them in the avr setup too but I cannot say for sure now.

interesting.... yes a stereo amp should sound better than a avr for music.

You planning to use your newly ordered monitor 9's with an AVR for movies right...??

so how does the setup work ?

could u explain briefly in layman terms as to how what you have...

"Emotiva UMC1 as a preamp/processor and UPA5 as multichannel amp"

works differently than a

"5.1/7.1 AVR"...??

Thanks ;-)

All AVR's perform the following functions
1. Takes signals from multiple sources (digital/analog) and outputs it into digital/analog) formats
2.Pre-amplification (from millivolts to a few volts or eqvt)
3. Has decoders that translate movie and music into sound signals to each channel. So they would have decoders for dolby/dts/dolby hd/dts master...
4. Amplification to the level which matches what your speakers need from 50-200w per channel
5. May have a tuner (AM/FM)

The typical reasons that AVR's perform poorly as compared to a stereo preamp/amp combination is complexity and the absence of true power.

By splitting the processor and the amp, the idea is to achieve the best of both worlds. The UMC1 would do pts 1,2,3 and 5 while the upa 5 does point 4. The other advantage would be to add more amplifications if you want to later on for say the front two speakers only.

The other pt. being, processors have the most changes in technology, so replacing them would be a cheaper option than replacing the AVR.

i went to their website to learn more about pre-pro + amp combo.

i'm assuming that a UPA-5 will let you make a 5.1 setup and a UPA-7 will let you make a 7.1 setup.....

Is that correct ? Offcourse you can add a sub to either of them right...?

thanks

Yes, you can.

The sub being an active component has its own amplifier.

You can also buy a upa 5 + xpa2 or xpa1+ xpa1 depending upon your budget.

You can also buy an avr which has a pre-out and connect to the multi-channel amp, instead of the UMC1.

heard a pair of Monitor 9's V6 again but this time they were broken in for about 100 odd hours. The sound signature not changed that much but felt the highs were more toned & taut. The lows were better too, fast & agile & quite accurate without exaggeration. Heard some tabla performance where the tablas were being played at breakneck speed & was like a rapidfire volley of shots in full flow, really enjoyed the sound as it was near about natural & thoroughly enjoyable :) Must find out about the artist

The Monitor 9's were paired to a TEAC Stereo Receiver 80 W RMS & Source was Pioneer DV610 with AR 16Guage Speaker Cables.

Heard a pair of Mirage OMD15's(Quite Interesting) & Paradigm Reference Studio 100's(:annoyed: what a let down - all show no go!) too but the low down on them is for another thread ;)

PS: The more i listen to the Monitor 9's the more i like them :D

For a Floorstander they are just about right with a nice driver size... not too big.. not too small.. i think they are quite good for 50k.. if you have the dough.. go for it..
