Tata sky hd

Finally got TATASKY HD, installed activated and running on hd...
video running at 720p cos i didn't like 1080i .... the interlacing was far too distracting...
audio out through coaxial to 5.1 reciever...

a few things i noticed...
i was checking the settings and i noticed that the hd outputs had fewer scanning lines than actual...
in proper hd these are the scan frequencies...
1080p - H-68Khz
1080i H-34Khz
720p H-45khz

when i checked the output in tatasky on hdmi.. i found this...
1080i H-37Khz
720p H-28Khz
and no 1080p.... but we knew this... :(

could indicate lesser quality.. although the images look simply fantastic in HD channels it still looks ok.... looks like they've compressed it just enough .. on the barrier where the compression effects just start to show.. nevertheless we cant compare it to bluray quality obviously....

and one more thing... the 5.1 output on NGC HD seemed kinda wavy.. sounded like it was mostly coming through the left and suddenly shifts to centre and back to left....
i thought it could be because of the dolby o/p so changed it to PCM and still getting the same kinda o/p... 5.1 o/p on the other HD channels.. discovery, espn, star... all sound pretty good.... good effects also.....

can anyone else running TS HD on 5.1 verify this "anomaly" on NGC HD ?????

Still struggling to get the HD channels activated, customer care said they will activate last night as bulk upload will happen . Sunday morning still not working, i have called the customer care and raised a complaint now. Need it fixed by evening as i want to watch the match.

I had the same problem. I called the CC after 10-12 hours and told them I want all 3 connections of mine disconnected if they're not activating my HD connection on an immediate basis. I gave them the subscriber IDs and sounded stern. The CC Exec transferred my call to another department, who upon hearing my demand activated in 10 seconds. Flat.

....

Like I said before (quoted below), it is unevenly distributed - I can hear commentary from Rear Left, which comes and goes like it has a mind of its own. The sub frequencies seem to waver every now and then. I am finding it very annoying, especially when I watch it on the bean bag (the bass level is higher when I am on the bean bag, understandably). I am having to adjust the sub level every now and then.

....... It may be just me, but NGC HD seems to have an unevenly distributed 5.1 audio - the sub seems to hum every now and then :indifferent14:.

I have a Sony Bravia KLV32 HD Ready 32" TV. Which would be a better setting 720p or 1080i ? (The STB is connected via HDMI)...

my TS HD was activated yesterday.

HD channels looks good.

Installation guy/call center people told me South saver pack (Rs 260 PM ) + HD pack is free for first 2 months.
But I found many of channels in South saver pack (DTH India - Tata Sky DTH Channel Packages ) like NDTV 24*7, NDTV profit, NGC, Discovery, Animal planet were not available in SD. I have logged a call with TS Cust support, let me see thier response.

Couple of other things.
I felt SD channels were better in old STB.
There was difference in sound in HD channels. Vovuzelas were sounding better in SD channel. With HD channel, Vovuzelas sound varies a lot. earlier it was contant bee humming sound which I used to enjoy...

Now transfer of ownership is free. (You can use this for your old STB). Still dont know what will happen to existing balance.

Watched the England Vs Germany match yesterday on my HD 20 on ESPN HD, the PQ was awesome and my eyes literally popped out.

Kudos to TS people as they have done an awesome job and its too good.

I noticed at 720p, there was strangely some flicker, and it was gone at 1080i (though it sud have been the other way around). Even though my 50" LG PQ60 is only HD Ready, the picture quality is amazing...

If I understand correctly, the transmission is 1080i. Hence the signal has to be de-interlaced and scaled to your TV resolution. Setting 720p output from the set-top box means your set-top box is performing this video processing (which is then processed to 768p on typical HD-ready TVs). Setting 1080i output from the set-top box means that your TV is performing this processing (directly to 768p for typical HD-ready).

What it just means is that your TV has a better processor than the set-top box (which would generally be the case). Hence, I am not at all surprised by your observation.

- Prasad.

Can someone tell me, where the HD STB will be available in MUMBAI?
Or the contact details of the Mumbai distributer?

Since it is not available in Pune right now, it may be worthwhile to go and purchase it from Mumbai.
Thanks in advance

I had called the Tata Sky CC people on the 19th (saturday) and ordered their HD service. I payed 2600 through my credit card on the phone itself. The CC people promised me a delivery within 48 hours. Moments after I ended the convseration, the Tata Sky dealer(?) called me and said it may take 2-3 days for him to get the box and set it up for me. I said ok - no big deal.

I waited for 2 days. No call from the dealer. I called him back to ask him what was going on. He sai they still hadn't received the HD box, and it might take another couple of days. Next day, I called the CC people again. Some woman picked up. She said that there's a big shortage, and it'll take 5 more working days. I asked to speak to her superior directly after that. The 'team leader' spoke to me and said that it'll likely be a couple of days, but she would connect me to the sales dept. They also said only 2-3 days more.

Today, I decided would be the make-or-break situation. I called the dealer again. Difficult to get a hold of him. Rejected my calls a couple of times before answering. He said that he'll call me when it comes, but he doesn't expect for another 4-5 days. Now, I was totally put off with this whole experience. I thought I'd give TS one last chance. I called CC once more and asked them how much longer. They said 6-7 working days.

Last straw. I cancelled the order. Waiting for them to debit my money back now. I'm very disappointed with Tata Sky and their false promises.

I got a call from the TS dealer yesterday. He was calling to fix up an appointment to bring the HD box. I told him it was cancelled. After half an hour of speaking to him, I decided to cancel my request for a refund, and get the box. Felling towards Tata Sky CC be damned, I wanted to watch the Germany vs England match in HD. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to install the dish yesterday (Sunday - society rules say no drilling). So he came today and installed it. Everything's working fine.

My first impression of NGC HD and Discovery HD wasn't great. I thought - this is better than SD, but not great. Perhaps it was just the type of scene, but after that, it went to a shot in a forest. Looked great. No complaints. The only thing that I can say is - don't expect it to be near blu-ray quality. Slightly better than a decent upscaled DVD would be more accurate.

Pretty happy overall. Can't wait to watch the match tonight.
