Tata sky hd

What about NewsX? Its supposedly the first HD ready news channel (by which I interpret that their recording, storage, etc. is in HD, so all they need to do is start uplinking in HD).

What I am really looking forward to is cricket in HD. Would be great to see the ball seam and the dust when the ball hits the deck. Also hoping to hear more stadium like sound when the ball meets the bat!

+1 for that :clapping:.. hope we get Cricket in HD next year for World Cup matches. It will be all together difference experience..

The PQ of the HD channels is good, specially for the live Wimbledon and football matches that is what matters, i don't feel discussion compression and outputs will help much.

Just waiting for them to add more channels to the HD package so if any one has news on the same do share, i did hear that star movies HD may come, but did not hear anything conclusive on the same.

Fox already have number of international HD channel. Hope tatay sky will add soon in their HD package.

I managed to pick up one of these HD STBs from a shop in Kolkata. They're not at all easy to get.
I asked a few dealers and they all said that they might get stock on/after July 4. Went to a dealer I always go to and he said he had stock, examined it - it was a fresh piece, so I picked it up.
I called TATA-SKY and was told that someone would be getting in touch with me regarding installation of the dish.

And to all those Kolkatans mewing about not getting a TATA SKY HD box and moaning about how Kolkata is still stuck in 480P land, try here: Sancheiti Electronics Ltd. 2212 6168/69

Some of us who have 'Sun Direct HD' enjoyed watching the IPL in HD this year. The whole experience was quite elevated comapred to the SD coverage and the best paret was, no advertisements. Advertisements during cricket games are a huge nuisanced, much more so than with any other sport or event.

Where can i get a tata sky hd box in Gurgaon ? Any pointers ? Want to enjoy a few WC matches on HD

Oh! The 24 in 1080p/24 means 24fps for movies? Thanks, I did not know that.:)

Now please find a blu-ray encoded at 1080p/60.
You may find by casual googling that blu-ray does not allow for 1080p/60 video.

Oh, this is news to me!

Blu-ray can store video at 1080i60, 1080p30, 1080p24, 720p60, and various SD resolutions but it can't store video at 1080p60. However, most blu-ray players convert the 1080i60 or 1080p30 to 1080p60 before sending it to the display.

In this case, I have to agree with your original statement. There will not be much difference between 1080i and 1080p. 1080i offers more temporal resolution (more fields per second - better for fast moving videos) and 1080p offers more vertical resolution (more lines per field - better for more detail).

Well, I learned something new today :clapping:

OK. Some feedback on the HD channels after the initial euphoria has died down. Connected the cable box to my HT, and have the following observations regarding the diff channels

1. Start Sports HD - Watched the Wimbledon (Federer Match) in HD. PQ was amazing as compared to the SD channel. However, when I switched on my HT, found that the surround effect was not that good. i.e. the match played in surround, but whenever the commentator started to say anything, his voice stayed on surround for a sec, and then moved to the front speakers. It was a bit distracting.

2. Discovery HD - Again, PQ is amazing. Sat 4 feet away from the screen and still couldnt see any artifacts. However, the gripe against Discovery is that the sound doesn't seem to be in surround. The HT display shows 5.1, however I did not get the immersive experience. Maybe its just that specific program. Need to see a few more programs on discovery to confirm this.

3. National Geographic HD - Easily the best in terms of the audio experience. Full surround experience in a couple of programs that I watched. Picture quality is also great. They have small segments where they show stuff like egg breaking, water splashing etc. in super-slo-motion and it looks AMAZING.

4. ESPN HD - Since there was no telecast yesterday, did not get a chance to check the channel. Will watch Brazil V/s Netherlands in HD tomm and comment on it.

I have made the following connections from my tata Sky HD box. Can some enlightened soul tell me if I am getting the best possible experience ?

STB - Component video out - TV. (Does this give 720p / 1080i ?)
STB - Audio out (Red + White) - TV

STB - HDMI Out - Bose Receiver.
Bose Receiver - HDMI out - TV

The component connection lets me watch the HD channels in stereo without having to switch on my Bose system. Useful if I am watching TV late night. Also easy to watch the SD channels

The HDMI connection through Bose lets me watch HD Channels in surround sound. Useful for day-time matches as well as Showcase HD movies.

I have a bose 3-2-1 with HDMI as well. I was wondering if someone could clarify the correct connections to get digital audio and video. Assuming I always use my Bose for the sound, do I need to connect the component and red/white cables? Can the HDMI cable suffice for all channels or do we have to connect the analog ones? I would like to avoid any analog connections since they are much inferior to HDMI. Thanks

Just got Tatasky HD installed. Pic quality is AWESOME for the HD channels. If anyone is in Mumbai / Navi Mumbai area and wants STB, let me know. The dealer still has a few boxes available

Which dealer did you buy it from? I was told by customer service that TS is the only distributor for mumbai currently.

I am not sure of what connections the bose 3-2-1 has. Since you have HDMI on bose, the Tata Sky STB HDMI connection can go into your bose 3-2-1, and another HDMI from your bose to TV. That way, audio gets transferred to the bose system via HDMI, and video goes to TV through bose.

Downside is that you will have to keep your bose system on even for the SD Channels. Or you could do something like I did, which will let you watch TV with or without using your bose speakers

Guys no stock in Bangalore at all.. anyone knows abt de stock pls let me no... only 8 WC matches left:sad:

I think i have mentioned before, Bangalore users can try Pai Indranagar as they were supposed to get a stock of 100 boxes this week.

Other option may be:

[for stereo listening without receiver - setting HDMI audio on]
STB - HDMI - TV (for video and audio)

[for 5.1 listening with receiver - setting HDMI audio off]
STB - HDMI - TV (for video)
STB- Coaxial out - Receiver (for audio)

The only thing is whether the coax carries the full sound. Or rather, does STB receive and decode HD-Audio? If not, coaxial would be adequate.

Expert comments please!

[ Anyways, I am planning on the connections as above as I do not have a HDMI receiver ]

Today, TATA SKY HD installed and activated as well.
Hooked to Denon 2310 and wallah.. started showing HD channels with DOLBY DIGITAL sound.

I have set my receiver to convert 1080i to 1080P and you get good feeling when you receiver shows DOLBY DIGITAL symbol.

Tonight I will check PQ of HD sports channels.

What can I say about PQ of HD channel, it was treat to eyes.:licklips: It was very good experience to go from crappy SD to HD broadcasting.
Tata Sky..I want more HD channels.

I am really getting quite confused with these connections. When I connect my laptop via HDMI (pic+sound) to my Sony TV, I simply connect the HDMI from the laptop to the HDMI of the TV. Then I put the TV input to HDMI, and the Bose system to "AUX". I am not sure why it needs to be on AUX, but the sound works. Not sure if this is optimum, though, since I read somewhere that one should not take this indirect route. But with a PC to TV connection there's not much to lose anyway since it's all stereo only.

Regrading HDMI vs coax for sound, HDMI is superior, but the input needs to be 24 bit (coax is 16 bit I understand) and 7.1 to notice any improvement over coax.

So what I am looking at probably is the second setup you listed, i.e.

[for 5.1 listening with receiver - setting HDMI audio off]
STB - HDMI - TV (for video)
STB- Coaxial out - Receiver (for audio)

because I doubt that the bose can take HDMI input from the STB and transmit both video and audio. According to the manual, the HDMI port on the Bose 3-2-1 is for connecting the TV to the Bose DVD (i.e. the built in DVD player). I wonder if there's a better way to do this.

I think you misunderstood. I am suggesting the HDMI connection from STB direct to TV (no connections to receiver). Only coax to receiver from audio.

Does this solve your problem?

So what is your setup? Coax for sound right? Or HDMI?

Its HDMI for both video and audio.
Connected hdmi out from HD STB to SAT/CBL (HDMI3) connection on Denon2310
Set decode mode auto and it recognized sound as DOLBY DIGITAL.

now only one cable take care of everything.. less wires less hassle.. Thank God.

The way i am using is i have the spdif out form TS connected to Coax in on the Denon Amp.
In Audio settings on TS HD box i tried PCM but sound quality was not good and Digital light was not glowing on the amp. As soon as i switched to Dolby on TS HD box the Digital indicator came on the Denon Amp and i got 5.1 sound.

So if connecting through coax better to set the audio output on your HD box on Dolby.

I don't have HDMI input in my amp so can't try directly through HDMI cable.

OK, I'm not home but apparently I got it delivered. The coax cable is not supplied by Tata Sky though, so I'll either have to buy it or check if I got one with my bose system (there were quite a few free cables). This also now appears to be the only way for me as well- Since I realized that I don't have HDMI-in for the bose 3-2-1 since it's 1 generation old now (duh. That'll teach me to be an early adopter).
