Tata sky hd

I read at many places that 720p is much superior to 1080i, since 1080i is just 540p with interlacing.

In the context of DTH operators, does this mean that one would be pulling a higher source bandwidth by selecting 720p in the STB options menu? Has anyone with really large (46+") HDTVs run any tests with this?

(What got me thinking was that I watched a 720p x264 version of Minority report, and it was quite awesome.)

Hey Dillihifi, Do u have annual mega pack subscription?? If yes... then connect the wire from the dish to the HD STB... connect the box to your TV. Now replace the digicard in ur HD STB with the one in ur older STB... This works... But if u do not have annual mega pack, then u gotta wait as the cc won't activate HD pack till u have ur HD STB installed by their "engineers"...

Putting the old STB card in the new one will not make the new one work. As its paired with the old box.

When the engineer comes to your place he calls the back end team and clones the card and pairs it with the new box to work. That is when it starts to work.

Just putting it in the new box without pairing may not get it to work. Also HD channels take 24 hours for activation after the engineer has visited the site. Sometimes it happen earlier also.

Yes, it requires 24 hrs, as the site-engineers and CC guys say.............but if you insist sufficiently with the CC staff, they can get it going immediately..................as it happened for me, and some earlier cases as well. Infact, I got the idea from one poster in this thread itself.:)

No, the STB downscales it to 720p, and infact I noticed slight flicker at 720p, and it worked fine at 1080i.
Actually 1080i is NOT 540p in the true sense, because the interlace is hardly noticeable to the human eye. Moreover, 1080i is the standard for HD transmission across the world, apart from paid movies.

Same here, they said it'll take upto 48hrs to activate HD Gold Pack, but I kept pestering the CC, and got it with in an hour or so...

Btw... replacing the old card worked for me... they only require to register the HD box in ur name(which they do before the engineer comes)... thats it... also the HD pack is included in the annual mega pack... so it does not take any activation time if u r already on the mega pack.

Although a coaxial RG6 75ohm cable is best, It is quite possible that these companies use RG59 to save money, although I seriously doubt it. I may be wrong though since you enever knwo with these companies and their constant attempts to cut corners. In any case you can buy your own RG6 cable and use that.

Bought the STB from a dealer today and tried to install myself. At the end, I got the screen which gave me the menu list with the voice, but without the picture of the channel, the only thing I could see in each channel was a yellow triangle with an exclamation. I called up the CC for getting the activation done. He took up the registration of the STB; initially he mentioned that this service was in Mumbai only and not yet started in Thane, but agreed to do so after I said that it was active in Belapur. He then mentioned that there was a separate cabling required without which the activation cannot be done. So here I am and will wait for the activation.

No separate cabling is required. He's bluffing. The service techs just hooked up the new STB, read out my old card number to customer care and the channels were activated in 1 min

Watched Kites in HD yesterday. PQ was amazing, surround sound was good. First time watched a hindi movie in surround sound setup at home. Its a pity that the movie was crap ! Hopefully they'll show atleast one HD movie on showcase every month. Last year I did not use any of my 12 free showcase movies. This year I'll use it, even if just for the HD experiencel. That itself should be paisa-wasool for the STB box ( 200*2*12)

This offer is not valid for everyone with yearly billing right? I think I am on the plan where you pay for 10 and get 12 months. I don't recall getting any free showcase movies in that plan. Reg. the movie, what did you expect- Indian movies and shows suck quite uniformly.

2.The quality of SD channles is more or less the same.
3. The quality of NATGEO HD and Discovery HD is awesome:yahoo: The pictures are very clear. Bt it should be noted that these are all-together different transmissions, so your favourite show might not be available.

Now the GLITCHES :
1. There is definitiely a sound problem in Discovery HD. The volume is lower than usual.
2. Also there is a chinese subtitles problem in NatGeo HD. They don't seem to go away.

But these are minor problems which , I hope, will be rectified soon.

1. I could perceive a significant improvement in SD channels (40" TV)
2. Wouldn't call NGC and Discovery awesome. The sports channels are freaking awesome though, since they are shot with HD cameras.
3. Sound is a problem for me on NGC not Discovery, it seems to come only from the left speaker of my 2.1 setup. Also it seems to switch between stereo and surround
4. The subtitles don't bother me as much as the fact that NGC is not bothered to remove them. Subtitles should be *optional* for all channels where they are used.

Hi guys, Only yesterday I became a proud owner of TS HD. Here are some of the important things about it :
1. DO NOT order TS HD via the CC. They just postpone things everytime. Instead look up a dealer in ur area and order it from there. This will take a lot less time as the demand for HD is very high due to the FIFA WC and CC has booked more orders than it can deliver.

I agree with your comments

NatGeo HD the 5.1 sound is too good
Discovery HD, although 5.1 sound is there, the volume is very low, and not much bass effect is there.

I am rather bemused by all the talk of subtitles on the 'National Geographic HD' channel. HOw come I don't see the sub-titles on SunDirect HD or DIsh TruHD? After all it is the same channel, right? My guess is it has to be a screw up on the part of TataSky HD or else it would be an issue with all the DTH operators.

I agree with you.
The engineer came in today morning and fixed up the STB, (wifey mentions that no change in wiring done, I am currently out of town), much earlier than expected. We are now waiting for the HD activation, though I personally wont be at home to watch the football matches.

Just wondering..... Tata Sky HD is launched initially only in Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai according to their website. But if I can get hold of the HD STB, will it work anywhere in India? or will it work only in the cities where it has been launched??

I sent a mail to TataSky more than a week back with this query (when the CC was telling that THD was not yet launched in Bangalore) and was told if I can get hold of a HD STB, it can be activated anywhere in the country.

It should work. Only problem is that the CC insist on the engineer to 'fit in the STB' and 'change the cables' before activating. Such engineers are not in every city! Hence check out with CC before buying the STB.

It will work in any cities where, TATA Sky sales and technical support team has a presence. It has worked for me in Pune................and likewise, many others in B'lore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, etc have also got their connections activated.

I have the same plan as you (all channels, pay for 10 months). This offer should be valid for you as well. However, it does not show up in your account status on your STB. Call up TataSky customer care to order Kites-HD. They should be able to activate it for you. You can also ask them if you have any balance Showcase movies left.
