The Objective DAC is Here!

Got it working. Pics are below. I used a box type audio casette cover. cut the rca holes with a heated file and the usb port hole with a swiss knife. standoffs holes with a small screw driver.

I didnt use the supplied usb cable, its too small and thin. this one is a longer but much thicker, came with some camera or harmony remote, cant remember.

Hi doors

Where did you get the RCA plugs that you have connected to the ODAC? I am planning to get the ODAC as one of my friends is coming down in October from US. Any online or store in Bangalore I can get these plugs.

Thanks

gold plated rca are available on ebay as well as 8audio website. price depends on quality. you can purchase yet decent stuff from the mxelectronics website

Can this ODAC be sourced locally from anywhere in india?
I have a Fiio E7 and wish to try this one out.

After reading the detailed info here , I am keen to try it out.

Ordered the ODAC PCB only version to my friends hotel address in US. I should be able to lay my hands on it by 15th of this month. Now was actually thinking of pairing this with the Raspberry Pi as it will eliminate the huge PC problem (power and size) from the line. Going thru this link I hope the support for USB DAC's on Pi would get resolved and we can have the smallest form of PC for music playback. What do you guys think?

Thanks

I think ...that Raspberry pi + ODAC + Wifi + Squeezeplug might be an interesting DIY success to the now Logitech-murdered Squeezebox :)

USB might be limited to 16-bit, though, which might be a problem?

EDIT: I haven't thought about this in any depth, and I didn't realise there was a problem with USB DAC support anyway. It's a good thing I'm too lazy for DIY, or I might have ordered the parts

ANOTHER EDIT: There has been nothing from NwAVguy on his blog for some time now. I really hope he is ok, and it is only a temporary hiatus. Does anyone have any news?

Yes Thad as far as the thread link goes in my earlier post it is still work in progress for the USB DAC support. But looking at the success of xbmc being a similar initiative I think this will be sorted out soon and we can have one of the best music-pc DIY with less power hungry and small factor.

Thanks

It's worth reading this thread on Linux Musicians: Support of audio interfaces under Linux.

It's a bit of a downer, generally. I don't mean to spoil the party, because its my party [...and I'll cry if I want to ;) ]* too, as I'm more or less committed to sticking with Linux on my desktop and getting good sound out of it.

Is what he says about audio interfaces also going to be true of DACs? Well, I guess I'd better check out if the ODAC is class-1 or class-2 compliant.

*Damn: that song is a terrible earworm, it's going to on my mind for hours!

I am using odac with linux. no issues so far, plug and play. havent experimented much though.

Yes I remember someone on the forum was planning one. I have the ODAC but did nit buy the O2 as I have a better desktop amplifier. I am waiting for the desktop version of the O2.

First of all I am not a audiophile just another music listener.
Ok I got my ODAC from my friend in US and assembled today. Got my daughter's playing box put in some holes and made the DAC ready. Crude way of doing it but its ok till I get a proper case. Did not had the silver solder hence went to the nearby electrical repair shop and paid 20 bucks got the soldering done. Thanks to Audiodoc :clapping: for suggesting to use the LAN cables in a twisted format.

I connected it to my music-pc and played the flac songs over foobar2000. The sound is so clear/crisp and I feel the amplification :clapping:also has increased when compared to my mobo's spdif output which I was using till :yahoo: now. I must say this is one hell of a USB DAC.

I am going to get rid of my music-pc and shift my music to my htpc and use it for both music/video. So wait for my sale thread soon with the music-pc components :ohyeah:.

I will post the pictures later in the day, need to dust the camera :). Cant' wait for the impressions to share over here.

Thanks

If you want a compact package, MK802 II based small android "thumb computers" (i.e. which you can plug into HDMI display) run android, and are able to support sound using USB interface. I have successfully connected my ODAC this way and get superb sound from android device. I believe it is class-1 only. And they are now costing $40-$50. Better than Raspberry Pi.

Remote control on android device is bit of issue for now; but right now, I have a wireless keyboard that takes care of problem.
